REVISION – APPLICATION OF DERIVATIVES

1. The sides of an equilateral triangle are increasing at the rate of

2 cm/sec. Find the rate at which the area increases, when side
is 10cm.
2. Find the rate of change of volume of a sphere with respect to its
surface area, when the radius is 2cm.
3. The amount of pollution content added in air in a city due to x
diesel vehicles is given by the equation 𝑃(𝑥) = 0.005𝑥 3 + 0.02𝑥 2 +
30 𝑥. Find the marginal increase in pollution content when 3
diesel vehicles are added.
4. The length x of a rectangle is decreasing at the rate of 5cm/m
and the width y is increasing at the rate of 4cm/m. When 𝑥 =
8𝑐𝑚 and 𝑦 = 6𝑐𝑚, find the rate of change of the
(a) the perimeter (b) the area of the rectangle.
5. Find the intervals in which the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 12𝑥 2 + 36𝑥
is strictly increasing and decreasing.
6. Show that the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 5 + 40𝑥 3 + 240𝑥 is always
increasing on R.
7. Find the maximum and minimum value of the function f(𝑥) =
−|𝑥 + 1| + 5.
8. For what value of 𝑥 in the interval [0, 𝜋], does the function sin
2x attains the maximum value.
9. Find the absolute maximum and minimum value of 𝑓(𝑥) =
1
(3𝑥 2 − 𝑥 3 )3 , 𝑥 ∈ [−1,1].
10. Three numbers are given whose sum is 180 and the ratio
between first two of them is 1:2. If the product of the number
is greatest, find the numbers. Ans: 40,80,60
11. Show that of all the rectangles of given perimeter the square
has the greatest area. Ans: 𝑥 = 𝑝/4
