Tutorial Sheet - 8

Topic Covered: Hausdorff dimension of the graphs of functions

1. If f : I → R is a Lipschitz function, then show that dimH (Gf ) = 1, where Gf denotes

the graph of the function f .

2. Let g : R → R be a continuous function. If f : R → R is a Lipschitz function, then

prove that
dimH (Gf +g ) = dimH (Gg ).

3. Let f, g : I → R be continuous on I. Suppose that f is a Lipschitz function. Then,

prove that dimH (Gf g ) ≤ dimH (Gg ).

4. If 1 ≤ β ≤ 2, then prove that the set Sβ := {f ∈ C[0, 1] : dimH (Gf ) = β} is dense in

C[0, 1].

5. Prove that the set S1 := {f ∈ C[0, 1] : dimH (Gf ) = 1} is dense Gδ - set.

(Note: A subset A of a metric space (X, d) is said to be a Gδ -set if it can be written as
countable intersection of open sets.)

6. Show that for each f ∈ C[0, 1] there exist two functions g, h ∈ C[0, 1] such that

f = g + h and dimH (Gg ) = dimH (Gh ) = 1.

(Hint: If A is a Gδ -set in a normed linear space (X, ∥.∥), then A + x is also a Gδ -set.)

7. Let A ⊂ R be a Borel set such that 0 < Hs (A) ≤ ∞. Then, show that there exists a
compact set K ⊂ A such that 0 < Hs (K) < ∞.
8. Suppose f ∈ C[0, 1]. Then, prove that for each 0 ≤ β ≤ dimH (Gf ), there exists a
compact set K ⊂ [0, 1] such that dimH (Gf )(K) = β, where Gf (K) = {(x, f (x)) : x ∈
K} ⊂ R2 .

9. Prove that for any a, b ∈ R and β ∈ [1, 2], there exists f ∈ C[0, 1] such that f (0) =
a, f (1) = b and dimH (Gf ) = β.

10. Let X be a proper compact subset of [0, 1] and let f : X → R be a continuous

map. Then, prove that for each max{dimH (Gf )(X), 1} ≤ β ≤ 2, the function f can be
extended continuously to a continuous function f˜ : [0, 1] → R such that dimH (G ˜) = β.
