NMIA Operation Phase

Operation of airport: two major impacts that of air emissions and noise
Surface Traffic: Air and noise quality is affected.

Air sector:
Appropriate dust suppression measures will be implemented within the project site
Use of asbestos will be prohibited
Background air quality of all transport corridors will be maintained by reducing idling
time and control on emissions
Aerobridges would be used for passenger transportation

Biodiversity and Forests:

CIDCO has planned to take up approx 350ha of plantation of mangroves
Compensatory vegetation and plantation programme will be undertaken within the
airport area
There was no wildlife observed during the field survey.
Contamination of Estuarine body would occur due to resuspension of sediments or dust
Ecosystem and Land

Impact of dredging and channelization can be reduced by proper routing of aligment to

maintain a proper flow.
The predicted water levels at different locations with and without the proposed
airport are practically same.
Project area lies in Deccan trap composed of hard massive basalt rock and will not
initiate any instability problems like landslides/ subsidence etc
STP and landfill sites are available in near by area to treat waste generated from the
airport.
Project activity does not involve clearing of any forest areas, and not include migratory
route of animals.
Excavated construction debris would be used for land development of marshy land in
the project site area.
Environment Management Plan
Air Quality

Hill cutting will be implemented during mechanized cutting to reduce fugitive emissions, and benching cutting
after assessing the slope stability of benches to avoid landslides.
Vehicles accessing the project site will be checked regularly for valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates.
Water sprinkling shall be carried out at the construction sites at regular intervals
Dust emissions from crushers can be controlled by dust control measures like wet drilling in the crushers the

use of dust containment enclosure and water spraying for the reduction of fly dust.
Pave crusher areas to reduce re-entrainment of settled dust on the unpaved road, reducing the drop height near
the crushing area and covering the potential dust emissions sources to reduce transportation of dust material.
All the construction sites shall be barricaded and camouflaged adequately
The use of asbestos-based material will be restricted.

Increased traffic load and haphazard development impacts are being mitigated through a detailed landside traffic
study which addresses the management of traffic and traffic decongestion through developmental projects like
MTHL, improvement of road capacity through the improvement of road infrastructure, the introduction of
multimodal communication systems, etc.
Environment Management Plan
Socio-Economic

Solar panels to the tune of 22.14 MW will be installed to reduce the carbon footprint of the project. The
installation of renewable energy components will help in reducing air pollution and meet the energy need of the
project. Positive socio-economic changes are anticipated as a large number of local people will get both
primary and secondary employment from the project, which will lead to the socioeconomic and regional
development of the area

Water Quality

Monitoring of water usage, STP at camp sites.

Ensuring there are no chemical or fuel spills
Tracking of consumption and installing a water meter at any new water abstraction source
Vehicle/heavy machinery washing at the site will be prohibited.
Contaminated oil from wash water from workshops/maintenance yards shall be separated out and decanted
water will be reused.
Wastewater will be recycled and reused for dust suppression
Environment Management Plan
Noise Quality

Provision of silencers at the exit of the noise source on the machinery

Construction equipment with minimum noise will be chosen.
Shock absorbing techniques
Regular maintenance of construction equipment and vehicles
Earplugs will be provided to the workers

Activities involving the operation of high noise-generating machinery will be generally avoided between 10 pm
and 6 am.
Regular maintenance of vehicles to reduce noise levels
The DG set will be provided with acoustic enclosures and exhaust mufflers for effective noise reduction of 25
dB (A) each.

Soil

Implementation of an oil spill contamination system and on-site recycling equipment.

Hazardous raw materials to be substituted by non-hazardous materials, e.g., cleaning solvents can be replaced
with film-free bio-degradable cleaners
Environment Management Plan

Separate storage to facilitate recycling and reuse of thinners, brushes, rags, paints,
Maintain appropriate inventory control stormwater generated within NMIA is to be drained to north or north-east
into Gadhi River or Panvel Creek.
The unconfined aquifers within the Panvel and Taloja industrial areas are reported to have occasional saltwater
intrusion, therefore groundwater abstraction is to be avoided in any case.

Biodiversity

Encouraging the local people and policymakers to maintain existing and potential water-bird habitats close to the
mudflats to the extent possible.
Regular monitoring of the Important Bird Areas, key links, and ESZ.
• Reduce anthropogenic pressure on the existing habitats by providing alternatives for fuel wood and fodder.
Compliance with EC conditions-
250.0635 Ha Degraded Forest Land taken up in Alibaug, Dahanu and Shahpur Division and total of 670,073 trees
planted through the Forest Department.
Compensatory mangrove plantation is done over 109 ha as per FC guidelines in kolekhar village.
NNMIAL intends to plant about 14000 trees outside the project site
