THE DISADVANTAGES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENT (AI) TO

EDUCATION

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the replication of human intellect in robots that are

programmed to think and act like humans. AI emerged as an academic area in 1955,

with initial excitement followed by a lack of funding and despair, began in 1956 at

Dartmouth College, when John McCarthy invented the term "artificial intelligence" to

distinguish it from cybernetics and to avoid the impact of Norbert Wiener (Tanveer et

al., 2020). AI is present everywhere, including education, because it appears in novel

teaching and learning approaches and is being researched in a variety of situations.

But, it gives disadvantages to education such as allows for easy cheating among

students, students over reliance on generative AI tools and lack of interpersonal

contact between teachers and students.

The first disadvantage the use of AI to education is it allows for easy cheating

in university environment. According to Malinka et al. (2023), with a few clicks,

students are able to obtain correct solutions to test questions, whole term papers, or

useful pieces of code. This ease of access to right solutions has the potential to

significantly diminish the learning experience that students should have. Hence,

students must approach their education with honesty, integrity, and a dedication to

study, since these characteristics will serve them well throughout their academic

journey and future jobs.

Secondly, student passively over reliance on generative AI tools also the

disadvantage of AI to education. When having a over reliance on generative AI tools,

such as ChatGPT, it can have a detrimental impact on education and research. This is

due to the simplicity with which solutions, problem-solving methodologies, and


scientific text production may be obtained, which might restrict critical thinking and

problem-solving skills (Rahman & Watanobe, 2023). ChatGPT has recently authorized

and acknowledged published articles and preprints and raises concerns about

producing essays and research papers. To counteract the negative impacts of passive

over reliance on AI technologies, students should view these tools as aides rather than

replacements for their own thinking and creativity.

Last but not least, the third disadvantage of the use of AI to education is lack of

interpersonal contact between teachers and students. Artificial intelligence-based

solutions cannot duplicate the link between teacher and student. According to

Krishnan et al. (2023), student and teacher are facing lack the necessary human touch

that makes learning a collaborative effort. Furthermore, the younger generation is

progressively distancing themselves from social engagement. As a result, achieving a

balance between technology and human contact is critical to provide students with a

comprehensive and successful learning experience.

In a nutshell, allows for easy cheating among students, students over reliance

on generative AI tools and lack of interpersonal contact between teachers and

students are the obvious result from the impact of the use of AI to education.While AI

may provide benefits such as personalized learning experiences, information access,

and administrative savings, it is critical to address these possible drawbacks and

ensure that AI is implemented strategically and ethically in educational contexts.
