LINEAR PROGRAMMING

1. SMK Taman Nilam wants to send a few of its SPM and STPM students to participate in the answering
technique seminar. The number of SPM participants is x and the number of STPM participants is y. The
participation of the students is based on the following constraints:
I. The total number of participants is not more than 70.
II. The number of SPM participants is not more than twice the number of STPM participants.
III. The number of STPM participants must exceed twice the number of SPM participants by at most 10.
(a)
Write three inequalities, other than and , which satisfy all the above constraints.
[3 marks]
(b) Using a scale of 2 cm to 10 participants on both axes, construct and shade the region R which satisfies
all the above constraints.
[3 marks]
(c) Using the graph in(b), find
(i) the range of the number of STPM participants if the number of SPM participants is 30,
(ii) the maximum total fees need to be paid by the school if the fee for each SPM and STPM
participant is RM10 and RM20 respectively.

following constraints:
I. The total number of baju kebaya sold is at most 450 pieces.
II. The number of type A baju kebaya produced does not exceed four times the number of baju kebaya
type B.
III. The minimum total of profit for both types of baju kebaya is RM3 600.
(a)
Write three inequalities, other than and , which satisfy all the above constraints.
[3 marks]
(b) Using a scale of 2 cm to 50 pieces of baju kebaya on both axes, construct and shade the region R which
satisfies all the above constraints.
[3 marks]
(c) Using the graph in(b), find
(i) the maximum number of type B baju kebaya if the number of type A baju kebaya sold in a given
month is 110,
(ii) the maximum total profit per month.

3. A shop sells two types of printer, printer P and printer Q. The price of a printer P and a printer Q are
RM1 000 and RM500 respectively. The shop sells x units of printer P and y unit of printer Q based on the
following constraints:
I. The number of sales of printer Q exceeds the number of sales of printer P by at most 40.
II. The total sales is at most RM50 000.
(a)
Write two inequalities, other than and , which satisfy the above constraints.

4. SMK Tun Saban’s cooperative store ordered school uniform and sport t-shirt with their respective price of
RM16 and RM18 each. School uniform must be at most twice the number of the sport t – shirt. The capital
of school cooperative store capital is only RM19 800. The school uniform and sport t – shirt will be sold at
a price of RM20 and RM21 respectively. The cooperative store has fixed the profit to be RM1 500 or more.
The cooperative store sold x pieces of school uniform and y pieces of sport t – shirt.
(a)
Write three inequalities, other than and , which satisfy all the above constraints.

Diagram 6
Diagram 6 shows two types of rattan storage boxes produced by Pak Ali’s family, namely big rattan storage
box and small rattan storage box. The production is based on the following constraints:
I. Pak Ali’s family is able to get at least 30 kg of rattan a day as the raw material. A big rattan storage
box requires 5 kg of rattan while a small rattan storage box requires 3 kg of rattan.
II. There are 20 workers. Two workers are required to produce one big rattan storage box while one
worker is required to produce one small rattan storage box.
III. The number of small rattan storage box is at least half of the number of big storage box.
(a) If x big rattan storage boxes and y small rattan storage boxes are produced in a day, write three
inequalities, other than and , which satisfy all the above constraints.
[3 marks]
(b) Using a scale of 2 cm to 2 rattan storage boxes on both axes, construct and shade the region R which
satisfies all the above constraints.
[3 marks]
(c) Using the graph in(b),
(i) Find the minimum small rattan storage boxes need to be produced if there are 3 big rattan
storage boxes produced.
(ii) The price for a small rattan storage box and a big rattan storage box are RM120 and RM250
respectively. Find the values of x and y that will provide the family with a maximum income.
Hence, find the maximum income in a week assuming the workers work for 7 days in a week.
