INDUSTRIAL DESIGN CENTRE INFORMATION BROCHURE Sy SSN Industrial Design Centre The Industrial Design Centre was established in the year 1969 for design education, research and consultancy in India. The IDC as an institution was conceived to be a part of an institution of technology i.e., Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, to give to ita strong ‘result oriented character so that there always is a possibility to actualize the design concepts emerging fromitsfield of eduction and research along with a broad technological support form the IIT as a whole. Besides offering cources at Masters level in Industrial Design and Visual Communication, IDC is involved in continuing education programmes, conducting seminars, conferences, in house training courses for industries and short term courses . In the area of consultancy anc design advisory services, IDC faculty has rendered service to more than 500 industrial organizations throughout India. The service and students of IDC are highly valued by the industry. _—— GS | IDC the Nucleus and the motivation Force the efforts are afoot fo create a regional design the IDC which places it into the intemational arena to become a catalyst and the motivating force for Asan countries. IDG's experiments in design cafion and awareness have already inspired several igners, design educators and the design schools alike. concern of the IDG for the problems at the grass root level in India and its efforts toward creating mode! apgroaches in solving such problems with design as a means and a tool, are arousing a great deal of interest among the developing countries. {DC thus is consolidating its capabilities to act as the leading force in the design field for the areas of education, healthiwelfare, industry, social communication etc. In the newly emerging socio-economic-cultural scene, industrial design centre plans to play a very significant role. Education at IDC The prime objective at the IDC is an integrated and interdisciplinary approach in design education. The design training at the IDC is intended to develop an attitude among the young aspirants toward problem solving in design in order to prepare them 10 go into the field and face a wide range of challenges at the end of their education a the centre. At present IDC conducts post graduate programme in product design and visual communication leading to M.Des. ( Master of Design ) degree. The courses for M.Des commence with developing in the students the perceptual abilities, skills and techniques, social and general awareness and then lead on toa series of projects characteristic of the problems of a developing country like Inc: and pertaining tothe industry, govenment, private institution and other Research Projects The research projects tend to become the backbone of the IDG. Its here that the new thoughts, philosophies and the ‘projects are researched into for the continuous revitalization of the IDC programmes, A very important ‘emphasis in research is in generating the theoretical material to Support the design decisions. Extensive work in visual iniormation processing has lead to developing new concepts in visual structure of form and product semantics. Quite often the teams working on these projects at the IDC are of an interdisciplinary as well as of multi-disciplinary nature with the members drawn from the wide and diverse expertise: available at the IIT and from outside. The experiences of the faculty in such projects are Systematically documented and these become some of the valuable tools of teaching athe IDC. @ Telephones for C-Dot e Chlorination plant for lon Exchange @ Table fans for Jyoti e Automatic Tapping and drilling M/c. for Larson and Toubro e Boilers for Thermax e Computer Keyboard Design for Godre} and Bo! = yce XL Card M/c. for MMC. @ STAIO Starter for Siemens India Ltd. e Fire Resisting Sare for teslage Elevator Design for OTIS e ‘The Architecture of India’ Exhibition for the Festival of India e Retail outlets for 1OC é o Lgntng pon and Greaves Ld Faculty At present there are fourteen faculty members who are supported by the technical staff as well as the workshop personnel in their educational, consultancy and research j projects. f The faculty members are engaged in a wide variety of tasks within the campus as well as in conducting programmes outside IIT in other educational institutions and industries. The areas of interest of the faculty include design methods, creativity, typography, calligraphy, type design, perception, basic design, computer graphics, visual semantics, ergonomics, educational technology, multimedia and interface design. The faculty at IDC comes from backgrounds like Industrial Design, Architecture, Art, Engineering, Sciences and Ergonomics. ergonomic appropriateness. Facilities The Workshop, studios and the laboratories at IDC provides an excellent opportunity for the student to execute and test out their design solutions. The IDC has fully equipped workshops for metal, wood, plastic, plaster, ceramic with provisions for making scale models as well as full size prototypes. The Audio-visual studio includes facilities for multi- screen projection. There are full fledged facilities for colour as well as BAV photography. Video facilities include complete U-Matic as well as VHS equipment. The Computer lab. in IDC includes PC's, Macintosh computers and a Silicon Graphics work station. IDC has its own printing studio - including facilities for offset printing. The Ergonomic laboratory conducts research in man- maachine relationship. With the existing facilities a variety of products and machines can be tested for The Industrial Design Centre offers a 2 year programme leading toa Master of Design degree (M-Des.) in the areas of . Industrial Design and Visual Communication. The programme is meant to develop skills, knowledge and aptitude among students to become creative problem solvers who can bring about innovation inthe manufacturing and communication industry. At the end of their education they are prepared to go into the field and face a wide range of challenges. The Industrial Design Centre, has followed an integrated and interdisciplinary approach towads design education. The centre over the past years has -experimented with different methods in design education to develop a flexible structure to suit the Needs of students. problems, a deeper understanding of aesthetic - for solving communication problems. The emphasis is to shift from the traditional intuitive designers toa = Industrial Design An Industrial designer is committed to the cause of improving the quality of human environment with products that are functional and aesthetic; Corelating technical and ergonomic information with its real human needs, creatively, is the testing ground for the student. The students interact with industries, institutions and social organizations during their projects to.understand, study, analyse and solve various existing problems. The choice and outcome of the final degree projects reflect the students aspirations to change the indian proces scene. Visual Communication The programme envisaged developing graduates with better maturity in handling communication design aspects, and generating methods and methodologies Course Structure Ingeneral, the first two semesters in the first year consist of theory courses and learning/ instruction oriented projects, while the second year is more or less | spent on design projects. Because of large variation in * < the undergraduate backgrounds, the courses are kept | flexible enough to level out the differences and bring all ] students on a common footing by the end of the second. semester. The project orientation is fully reflected in the course | structure. The projects in visual design and product | design are introduced right from the 1st semester. Depending on their interests the students can choose elective courses in the 3rd semester. Students can choose to specialize in the following areas: ‘Typography, Video, Photography / Audio-Visual, Information Design, Advanced Ergonomics, Exhibition Design, Computer Graphics, Illustration, Studies in Form, «'/oduaok Detailing and Product Visualization. Inthe second year the students undertake three application oriented projects of varying duration and complexities. They also have to do a special project oriented towards design research. tt 10 i Work Environment IDC has an informal work culture. The work load is heavy but this is balanced by a vary open and relaxed © atmosphere. Having a very good student-teacher relation (around 4:1) ensures a great deal of personal interaction. Regular presentations are held of all student projects with full participation of faculty members and / or extemal examiners to check on the progress and to give feedback. : Admissions For Industrial Design NE eae A bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent in any branch /’a bachelor's degree in architecture or equivalent’ Professional Diploma of NID 5 year programme.
