Quarter 2 – Module 1.1
Microsoft Windows XP Installation
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the
end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer
keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using
these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you
on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What’s New

I have this activity for you.

Task: Look for five hidden common computer hardware required in installing MS
Windows XP operating system. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

What Is It

Microsoft (MS) Windows XP operating system (OS) is out of date due to no more
updates available from Microsoft. However, there are still companies using the said operating
system because their application program fits into it. Some companies like banks, air traffic
controllers, and other groups still use Windows XP. In using the OS, you must consider the
hardware specification requirements before the installation of the software, or else the
installation will fail. The OS requirement is written on the cover of the installation disc or seen
in the manual. Let us find these system requirements below.

Microsoft Windows XP
Computer Hardware
Minimum Requirements Recommended
Component
Processor Intel or AMD 233 MHz or higher Intel or AMD 300 MHz or
higher
Memory 64 MB 128 MB
Hard disk space 1.5GB 1.5GB
CD/DVD ROM Required Required
Video VGA or better VGA or better
Mouse Required Required
Keyboard Required Required

5
CO_Q2_TLE10_CSS_ Module 1.1
Exceeding the minimum and recommended hardware requirements enhances the
performance of the computer. In installing OS, you can use a bootable Windows installation
CD, DVD or flash drive. Technicians always do the clean installation of OS which removes all
the content of the hard drive and is also considered as a fresh installation. However, you can
upgrade the existing OS by choosing the Upgrade during the installation process. Now that
you know already the hardware requirements and the type of installation, are you ready to
install Microsoft Windows XP OS?

Fantastic, let us begin.

Windows XP Installation
Below are the steps in installing the Windows XP operating system.

1. Turn on your computer system.

2. Set the boot order of the computer.

If you are using a DVD bootable disc then set the first boot to DVD; if you are using a
bootable USB drive, then the first boot must be a USB drive.

3. Insert the Windows XP disc into the CD/DVD-ROM drive or connect the bootable USB
flash drive with Windows XP to the USB port.

4. Restart the system.

To restart the system, press the reset button from the front panel of the system case or
press Ctrl + Alt + Del on the keyboard.

5. Press any key to boot from CD or USB

After the power-on self-test (POST) is initiated, it recognizes the first boot and loads the
content of the boot device. See the message “Press any key to boot CD/DVD or Press any
key to boot USB” then do so to go to windows installation setup. It looks like the illustration
below.

What if you missed to press any key? It will reboot or it will load the existing operating
system.

6. Welcome Setup
This shows you the blue MSDOS
screen and asks you to “Press F6 if
you need to install a third- party
SCSI or RAID driver”. If you don’t
have the third party, then ignore
pressing F6.

6
CO_Q2_TLE10_CSS_ Module 1.1
7. Windows XP Professional Setup – Welcome to Setup
In this stage, there are three options:
First is the “Continue” wherein you are
going to carry on with the setup process

and thirdly is “Quit” if you are going to
cancel the installation of Windows XP.

8. Windows XP Licensing Agreement

In this process, you are going to read the
Microsoft licensing agreement by
pressing the PAGE DOWN key from the
keyboard. After you read the
agreement, it is your choice to agree or
disagree with it. If you agree, press F8
to continue the installation process; if
you disagree, then press ESC on your
keyboard to escape the installation.

9. Partitioning
At this point, you are going to choose an
option where you are going to maximize
the capacity of the hard drive in one
partition or by creating two partitions in
one hard drive like what is shown on the
illustration on the right. If you are going
to create another partition, press the C
on your keyboard. Select drive C: then
hit enter.

7
CO_Q2_TLE10_CSS_ Module 1.1
10. Choosing a File System

the illustration on the right, you can
choose “Quick” to format speedily the
drive rather than selecting the full
format which will take your time. Select
NTFS file system (Quick) then hit
Enter to continue.

11. Drive formatting

In this stage, you can see a yellow
progress bar indicating the status of
the formatting process.

12. Setup is copying files

In this process, it will transfer the system files from the CD/DVD or USB boot drive to drive C:
so that the PC will use it in booting. After this, it will reboot as shown in the illustration below.

8

the 25 numerical and
character combinations given
by Microsoft labeled in the
installer disc or casing.
Without the product key, you
will not be able to continue
with the installation process.
After encoding the product
key, hit the Enter button to
continue.

17. Computer Name and Administrator Password

In this phase, you can either
create a computer name, use
the default name and put your
administrator password for
the administrator account, or
leave it blank.

18. Date and Time Setting

In this step, you are going to
configure the date and time
base on your region. For
