IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: 30 mins.)

After knowing the standard procedures of cleaning nails and manufacturer’s product recommendation, we will now
proceed to the application of fancy nails design. To start, let us review first how and where fancy nails design evolved.

The exact origin of nail treatment is unclear, since it appears to have originated in different part of
the world around the same time. In ancient Egypt, from 5000 to 3000 BC, women would dye their nails with
henna to indicate social status and seductiveness. Women of the lower class wore paste and neutral
shades, while the upper classes wore deep, bright shades. In Babylonia, 3200 BC, men, not women, painted
their nails with black and green kohl, an ancient cosmetic. To prepare for war, warriors of Babylon spent
hours having their nails prepared, hair curled and other similar beauty treatments. As in ancient Egypt, nail
color indicated one’s status, black for noblemen and green for the common man. Around the same time,
3000 BC, the first nail polish originated in ancient China. It was made from bee wax, egg whites, gelatin,
vegetables dyes and gum Arabic. Chinese dipped their nails in this mixture for several hours or let it on to
dry. Colors raged from pink to red, with gold and silver dust on their nails to show their social status.
Based on other facts, fancy nail design was also observed during Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and
was known for extremely long nails. Sometimes, these nails were protected by gold- and jewel-encrusted
nail guards.
The first actual record of nail art was from the short-lived Inca Empire (1438-1533), which at that time
was one of the largest empires in South America. Incas decorated their nails by painting eagles on them. In
1770, the first fancy gold and silver manicure sets were created. French King Louis XVI, who ruled from 1774
until his deposition in 1792, always had his nails taken care of using these sets. In the early 1800s, the modern
manicure developed with the invention of the orange stick, a thin wooden stick with one pointy end, usually
made from orange wood. Then again in 1970s, the natural look was back in fashion and preferred by many
women, but only for a short time. The French manicure style was created in Paris in 1976 by Jeff Pink, who
was the founder of the Los Angeles-based cosmetic company ORLY. Nail painting came back in vogue in
the 1980s and since then has been extremely popular.

D. Development (Time Frame: 1hr and 30 mins.)
Learning Task I. Tell whether the following ideas are related to fancy nail design or not. Mark if it is yes and X if it is not.
Write your answer on your notebook.

1. Painting with the brush

2. Taping is not a task
3. Painting with the toothpick
4. Water marble art technique
5. Sponge painting

Nail Art is associated with the art of drawing or painting different types of patterns on the nails. There are
assorted techniques to jazz up your nails with exclusive nail art décor.

Key Terms:

1. Acrylics -a chemical mixture of monomer liquid and polymer that can be directly applied on the nails or on
artificial nails also called nails extensions or enhancements.
2. Nail Gel – a chemical combination similar to acrylics, also known as shellac nails. Manicurist applies several
layers on the fingernails or/and toenails and lets it cure under a UV or LED light. When the gel is cured it hardens
the nails. Gel is also common in a polish form known as gel polish, and, like other forms of gel, also requires a
UV or LED light to cure. The difference between acrylic and gel is that acrylic dries naturally but gel needs UV
light to cure. Similarly, where regular nail polish will dry naturally, gel polish will remain tacky until cured by a UV
light.
3. Nail Polish/Nail Varnish - a lacquer applied to finger and toe nails to protect or as a base color. Nail
manicurists also use a base coat to protect and strengthen nails, as well as preventing the natural nail from
yellowing or staining.

Types of Nail Art Techniques

1. Painting with a brush- can use variety of brush.

2. Sponge bobbing- One can use this technique for getting gradient and achromatic kind of designs
on nails. The finishing you get after using sponge would likely be sprinkled and bespattered.
3. Stamping- As far as nail stamping technique is concerned, first the image which is printed on the
nail needs to be covered by the stumpy layer of special nail paints in the image plate.
4. Taping - A base color is initially applied on the nails, and then the tape is cut into small pieces and
later on applied to the nails. The tiny pieces of tapes are applied to those areas of nails which are
to be left in the base color itself. Then, you can apply the next coat of the color you wish to apply
on the unified nail. Lastly, you can remove the tape gently.
5. Digi world nail art - digital nail art machines have come up. These machines are more often used
with the therapists or beauty salons. The procedure is automated, and therefore it takes very less
time to get the desired nail art look.
6. Stencil Method- which are implanted on the dry coat of nail polish and acts as the background
for the image of the stencil. Then the stencil is placed strictly against the nails.
7. Airbrush nail art technique - are used for drizzling paint on nails.
8. Nail Art Decal and stickers - are new funky ways to embellish your nails beautifully.
9. Splatter nail - can use a fan brush stroke to make hip looking splatter nails,
10. Water marble nail art- technique involving dropping nail veneers into crystal clear water and
constructing a pattern on the water surface, the pattern is then deported to the nails.
11. Sharpie nail art - have the resemblance to watercolor paintings, and they actually look lovely.
One can also use this sharpies’ technique to make smart and precise designs.

A. Assimilation (Time Frame: 15 mins.)

One can also go for any of the above-mentioned combination and permutation of the techniques. This is a creative
ground, and therefore it all varies from person to person, upon the imagination and creativeness of the artist to draw some
amazing patterns on the nails. Many types of accessories like tattoos, jewels, and glitters are also used as add-ons to add a
style statement to the nail art. The most significant thing that lies is to take good care of the nails so that they give a healthy
and tidy look and appear more gracious with the nail art done on them.
