George Frederic Handel, who was born in Germany in 1685, travelled and
studied in Italy and settled in England in the early 1700s, can be considered one
Volume I
of the more modern thinking classical composers of his era. Because of his
travels and wide range of interest, Handel was aware of every new trend in music
Complete Works for Harpstchora
and applied this awareness to his approach to composition as well as performance.
Christopher Wood Harpsichord
It was, in fact, as a harpsichordist playing in the orchestras of opera houses that
Handel first gained recognition. There is no question but that his technique at

(GEO
the harpsichord keyboard was truly spectacular and that it was this artistry that
prompted the great composer to write his eight harpsichord suites. Although
these suites are considered, according to Handel’s time, “Lessons,” the term is

FREDERIC
somewhat of a misnomer. Handel’s harpsichord ‘Lessons’ are delicate works
of art, detailed and requiring thorough musicianship and a command of the
instrument to perform. |
All of Handel’s eight suites, although composed for the same instrument, vary
in musical concept, effect and meaning. Suite No. | composed in A Major is
undoubtedly the least intricate, with three uncomplicated dance movements.
HANDEL
No. 2 in F Minor has a sonata form with no dance movements. No. 3 in D Minor
shows the influence of German music and finally No. 4 in E Minor draws upon Suite I in A Mayor
Handel’s contrapuntal technique as both a composer and harpsichordist.
In this album, soloist Christopher Wood, recreates for us the mastery of the Suite II in F Minor
Handel harpsichord artistry as well as his immortal genius as a composer.
Harpsichordist Wood, has also recorded the remaining Suites Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 8
Suite LIT in D Minor
in another album which, along with this set, now comprise one of the finest col-
lections of Handel’s harpsichord compositions available. Suite IV in E Minor
