ORAL REHYDRATION SOLUTION MAKING

What is Oral rehydrating solution (ORESOL)?


• used to replace fluids and minerals (such as sodium, potassium) lost due to diarrhea and
vomiting.
• helps prevent or treat the loss of too much body water (dehydration).
• Having the right amount of fluids and minerals is important for the normal functioning of
the body.

What are the contents:


1. Glucose = for sodium (Na+) absorption
2. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) = For Fluid Retention
3. Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) = To serve as buffer system
4. Potassium Chloride (KCl) = For Smooth Muscle Contraction

What are the ingredients of homemade oresol?


❖ Ingredients to prepare:
❖ 1 Liter of Water (Mineral or Cooled boiled)
❖ 8 tsp. of Sugar
❖ 1 tsp. of salt

❖ 1 Glass of Water
❖ 2 tsp. of Sugar
❖ 1 pinch of salt

❖ ALL TO BE CONSUMED WITHIN 24 HOURS

What are the materials needed?


Salt-(rock)- 1tsp
Sugar- 8tsps
Drinking water - 1 liter
Clean Mixing Container
Knife/ Flat Object
Teaspoon
Cup/ Glass
Pen/ Marker
Paper

What are the guidelines?


✓ Infant must be given ¼ to ½ cup ORESOL every after LBM
✓ Child must be given ½ to 1 cup ORESOL every after LBM
✓ Adult must be given 1 or more cups ORESOL every after LBM

What are the measures to prevent diarrhea?


✓ Breastfeeding of infants
✓ Provide appropriate supplemental feeding
✓ Handwashing
✓ Utilize clean and potable water
✓ Clean toilet and proper disposal
✓ Waste (trash) management
✓ Immunize child with measles vaccine
✓ NO ANTIBIOTICS must be given to a diarrheic patient except in infectious diarrhea
(e.g. cholera)

What are the common side effects?


✓ Mild nausea and Vomitting may occur.
✓ These effects can be decreased by taking this product slowly in small amounts with
a spoon.
