Welcome to this issue of The EOC Voice, highlighting the services and accomplishments of its five opportunitybased programs. These programs serve potentially qualified college-bound achievers and enrolled students in the Tri-county area.

ETS 2011 Summer Session News


TheEducationalTalentSearchprogrampersonnel
saidBonVoyagetothegraduatingclassof2011ata grandeventheldattheMaincampusofTridentTechnical College.TheETSparticipantsrepresentedthegreater Berkeley,CharlestonandDorchestercounties.The studentsandparentsenjoyedagreatmealandprogram, andtheairwasfilledwithgreatanticipation.Theseniors allreminiscedabouttheformerdaysingradeschooland lookedforwardtonewhorizons.Theyhadalready selectedthecollegesanduniversitiestheydesiredto attend,andhavebeenawardedseveralscholarshipsand grants.Wesalutetheproudclassof2011.These studentshavegonetheextramile. ETSGraduated230Studentsthisyearand90%ofthem havebeenacceptedintopostsecondaryeducation.The studentswillbeattendingcollegesthroughouttheUnited States.Fortyeightofthe230studentsplantoattend TridentTechnicalCollege. ThirtyfivestudentsfromHautGap,St.George,and SedgefieldMiddleschoolsattendedtheETSSummer session2011.TheETSparticipantstouredseverallocal facilitiesincludingSPAWarontheNavalBase,Santee CooperHydroElectricPlant(Jefferies),andALCOA(Mt. HollyPlant).Thethemeforthisyearscampwas ExploringCareersthroughExploration.Thestudents alsoembracedSTEM,aprogramwhichincludescareersin science,technology,engineering,andmathematics.The ETSSummerAcademyfinishedthesummerSTEMwitha visittothelocalChannel2televisionstation.While visitingtheyactuallybecameapartoftheeveningnews. TheeveningnewsanchorspokebrieflyregardingtheETS programatTridentTechnicalCollege.Theparticipantsall enjoyedtheirmomentinthelights.Thebehindthe scenesopportunitypromptedthestudentstoaskmany questions. TheETSProgramwasawardedanew5yeargrant2012 2016!!!!ThisGrantwillallowustocontinueproudly servingourparticipants.ThemissionofETShasnot changed.Wehavearesponsibilitytohelpandassistas manystudentsaswecantogainaccessintopost secondaryeducation.Ourjobisalsotogetinformation outtothecommunities,andtoeducateparentsonthe valuesofeducationandthecollegeadmissionprocess, includingfinancialliteracy. The2011UpwardBoundMath&Science(UBMS) DiscoverySummerProgramwasanabsolutesuccess!
ForthesecondconsecutiveyeartheUBMSsummer programfocusedonVEXRoboticsastheirresearchtopicof choice.Studentswereagainchallengedwithdesigning, building,andprogrammingrobotsforcompetitioninaVEX Roboticssponsoredevent.TridentTechnicalCollegeUBMS builteightsuccesfulrobotstocompeteforthecoveted VEXRoboticsBattleofTRiOChampionship.Thisyears eventfeaturedtwelveotherteams,eightfromcompetition newcomer,KentuckyStateUniversitysUBMSprogram,as wellasfouradditionalteamsfromlastyearschampion, MorehouseCollegesUBMS.Lastyearscompetitionwas heldinAtlanta,GeorgiaatMorehouseCollege.TheTTC UBMScameupjustshyofwinningthecrownlastyearand vowedtoreturnthisyearandcapturetheelusivetitle.On July9,2011,TTChostedthecompetitiononthemain campusinthe410Buildingandthehometeamdelivered justastheypromisedbydeafeatingMorehouseinthefinal matchbyaconsiderablemarginandclaimingthetitleof BattleofTRiOchampions! TridentTechnicalCollegeUpwardBoundStudentsfaced veryformidablecompetitionfrombothvisitingprogramsas thebattlecamedowntothetwomostconsistentrobotsof theday.TTCsSCRobot2vs.MHsGARobot4,each havinglostlessthantwoofeighteenmatchestheentire day,wentheadtoheadinanepicbattlethatwentthe distanceinabestofthreeseries.TheTTCUBMScameout ontop,winningtheseriestworoundstooneandclaiming itsfirstBattleofTRiOteamtitle. Thecompetitiondeliveredanactionpackedshowingto wellover250ecstaticattendeesconsistingofstudentsand families.AlsoinattendancewasTTCsVicePresidentof StudentServices,Dr.EliseDavisMcFarland.Dr.Davis

McFarlandexpressedhertrueappreciationforsuchan eventthatdisplayedthedrive,creativity,intellect,aptitude, andcompetitivenatureofyoungpeoplewhoarefocused, guided,andsupportedbyprogramssuchasUpwardBound Math&Science.Wearelookingforwardtonextyears competitiontobeheldatKentuckyStateUniversityinJuly. Overall,theeventwasacompletesuccessandwouldnot havebeenpossiblewithoutthesupportoftheUBMS students,parents,staff,thevisitingprograms,andtheTTC family.WeCame!WeBuilt!WeWon!Thanksforallthe support!

Whats New at the EOC?


Objective1
15%ofparticipantsservedduringtheprojectyearthatdidnot haveasecondaryschooldiplomaoritsequivalentattimeof firstserviceintheprojectyearwillreceiveasecondaryschool diplomaoritsequivalentduringtheprojectyear.

TridentTechnicalCollegesEducationalOpportunity Center(EOC)isoperatingwithaslightlynewsetof objectivesthisyear.TheUSDepartmentofEducation hasmandatedthatallEOCs,beginning20112012,focus onrecruitingparticipantswhoarenotalreadyenrolled ineducationalprograms.

Objective2
70%ofparticipantsservedduringtheprojectyearwho,at timeoffirstserviceintheprojectyear,werenotalready enrolledinapostsecondaryeducationprogramand,who1) werehighschoolseniorsorequivalentsinalternative educationprograms;2)werehighschoolgraduates;or3)had obtainedahighschoolequivalencycertificate,willapplyfor financialaidduringtheprojectyear.

Objective3
60%ofparticipantsservedduringtheprojectyearwhoare notalreadyenrolledinapostsecondaryeducationprogram andwho1)arehighschoolseniors;2)arehighschool graduates;or3)haveobtainedahighschoolequivalency certificate,willapplyforcollegeadmissionduringtheproject year.

Amajorfocusforthisgrantperiodisonprovidingaccess toeducationforthosenotalreadyenrolledeitherinGED orpostsecondaryeducationprograms.Individualswho havepreviouslydroppedoutofschoolareoftenhesitant toreturnbecauseofpreviousfailures.Manynon collegereadyEOCparticipantsareintheirthirtiesand forties,andhavebeenoutofschoolformanyyears.It takestime,counseling,andmuchencouragementto calmtheirapprehensionsaboutreturningtoaclassroom ortakingatest.Fortunately,TridentsEOChasalways doneanexcellentjobengagingnonstudents.Inspiring adultstoobtainhighereducationhasbeenastalwart pointofourprogram.Wewill,however,needtobe industriousinfindingandenrollingadultswithouthigh schoolcredentialsintoprograms.Wewillattemptto identifystudentswhohavewithdrawnfromGED programsoritsequivalent,identifyreasonswhytheydid notcompletetheprogram,anddevisestrategiestohelp themreturntoschool.

Objective4
30%ofsecondaryschoolgraduates(orequivalents)whowere servedduringtheprojectyear,andwhowerenotalready enrolledinapostsecondaryeducationattimeoffirstservice intheprojectyear,willenrollinapostsecondaryeducation programduringeachprojectyear(orbytheendofthenext fallterm),orwillhavereceivednotificationbythefalltermof acceptance,butdeferredenrollmentuntilthenextacademic term(e.g.springterm).

Anotherpointoffocuswillbeservicesprovidedto militarymembersandtheirfamilies.TheEOCisuniquely qualifiedtoaddresstheneedsofmilitaryconnected individualsbecauseofitsgeographiclocationinanarea withalargemilitarypresence.TheEOChasnumerous establishedoutreachsitesthatservemilitaryconnected familiesthroughouttheTricountyregion,including serviceagenciesonboththeCharlestonAirForceand NavyBases.TridentEOCservesasaconduitforaccess toallthevaluableservicesavailableatlocalcolleges.

ThestaffoftheEducationalOpportunityCenteris determinedtoplan,implement,andoperatean exemplaryprogramwhichwillservethestatedpurpose ofEOCandmeetallspecificprogramobjectives.

Asthe20112012schoolyearbegins,Student SupportServicessendswarmregardstofacultyand
staffwhocontributedtothesuccessofour participantslastyear.Wearefortunatetohave colleagueswhogivemoreofthemselvesthanis definedintheirjobdescriptions.Welookforwardto ourcontinuedcollaborations.

Thissummer,StudentSupportServiceswelcomed ReginaBrownasournewtransfercounselor.She replacesTerranceJohnson,whoacceptedaposition withtheEducationalOpportunityCenter.Regina earnedherBachelorofSciencedegreefromFrancis MarionUniversityandaMasterofArtsdegreefrom WebsterUniversity.Inthewinterof2000,shebegan workingwiththeDepartmentofSocialServicesasa YouthSpecialist.Approximatelytwoyearslater,she beganworkingwithCommunitiesinSchoolsin CharlestonasaYouthSpecialistintheareaofdrop out/pregnancyprevention.ReginaworkedasaSC GEARUPCollegeAccessCoordinatorforthe CharlestonCountySchoolDistrictfrom20062011.

BeginningSeptember1,SSSwelcomedFedelia Chapmanasournewadministrativeassistant.She replacesDeniseBranchwhoretiredinJuly.Fedelia attendedCharlestonSouthernUniversityandTrident TechnicalCollege.Shehasovertwentyyearsof administrativeexperience.Mostrecently,sheworked asanadministrativeassistantwiththeCharleston CountySchoolDistrict.

Severalworkshopsarescheduledforthefallsemester. TopicsincludeHowtoMaketheMostofYourTime, ShowMeYourStyle,andothers.SSSparticipants willalsohaveanopportunitytoattendtheCharleston JazzOrchestrasLatinNightonSeptember24.In October,studentswilltourtheCollegeofCharleston andCharlestonSouthernUniversity.Othereventswill bescheduledatalaterdate.

Off to Another Great Year


VeteransUpwardBoundisofftoanothergreatyear.It
seemsunbelievablethatwearestartingourfifthyear!We havebeenverybusythispastspringandsummer,andnow fall2011classesareuponus. Thispastspring,JeanBrooksandIattendedthe31stAnnual NationalAssociationofVeteransUpwardBoundProjects ConferenceinTempe,Arizona.Itwasagreatconference withlotsofinformationontweaksandchangestoour nationalprogram.Twobigpartsoftheconference discussionsincludedfundingcutsasthefederal governmenttriestobalancethebudget,andrewriting

grantapplicationsforallVUBprogramsinthespringof2012.Its alwaysgoodtonetworkwithourotherprogramdirectorsandstaff, learningbestpractices,comparingwhatworksandwhatdoesnot, aswellasthefacetofacecontacts.Nextyear,wehostthe conventionhereinCharleston!

Shortlyafterwereturned,wesufferedamajorlosstotheprogram asCrisFeltyacceptedagrandopportunitytostepuptotheTrident TechnicalCollegeGrantWriterposition.CriswasthefirstVUBstaff member,bringingtheTTCVUBtolifeanddevelopingourprogram intothesuccessthatitistoday.Herdepthofknowledge,her Englishbackground,andherpersonalmotivationtoensurethat everydetailwascompletedinthemostcorrectmanner,setthebar ofexcellenceveryhigh.Becauseofher,wewentfromabeginning programthataskedquestionsandneededdirections,toonethat otherseasonedVUBstaffwouldcallforadviceandsolutions.We wishCristheverybestinhernewposition,andweknowthatwe willseeheraroundcampusandwillworkcloselywithhernext spring.

Thatsaid,wewelcomeTaniaKernstoourofficeasthenew AcademicCoordinator!Taniabringsavariedbackground,most recentlywithExperienceWorks,assistingadultsinemployment. OtherrecentmilestonesincludeaVUBeventattheRiverDogs gameinMay(theJuneMilitaryAppreciationNightwasrainedout), averysuccessfulsummersemester,andtheexcellentfourth AnnualVUBBanquet.Ourguestspeaker,ColonelTrez,USArmy, Retired,DirectorofStaffatTheCitadel,broughtanoutstanding motivationalmessage,andTTCPresidentDr.Thornleypresented theawardsandgraduationcertificates.Duvallprepareda wonderfulmealandeventheweathercooperated,rainingearlyin theafternoonandcoolingthetemperaturesforourexceptional event.Ifyoumissedthisbanquet,pleasemarkyourcalendarfor midAugust,2012.
