I. OBJECTIVES:
1. To understand the principle and structure of Rockwell hardness testing machine.
2. To know the method of experiment with Rockwell hardness testing machine.
3. To determine the hardness number of selected materials.

II. MATERIALS:
Carbon Steel (AISI 1015)
Carbon Steel (AISI 1045)
Carbon Steel (AISI 1075)

III. PROCEDURE:

1. Set the prepared load either 100 kg or 150 kg.

2. Select the proper indenter and insert it on the plunger rod.
3. Place the specimen on the anvil.
4. Elevate specimen into contact with the indenter by means of capstan until the small
pointer of the gauge points at the red dot.
5. Turn the outer ring of the gauge to set the dial to zero either in red or black scale.
6. Push the crank handle backward to apply major load.
7. Watch the pointer till it comes to rest. Then pull the crank handle to its original
position.
8. Read and record the hardness number

9. Turn the capstan to bring down the specimen and then remove it from the anvil.
10. Tabulate the data.
IV. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS:

In the table it shows the result of the Rockwell Hardness Test.

The item that been used.
- 150kg load
- Diamond Indenter

METAL 1 2 3 Hardness Result

Carbon Steel
(AISI1015) 59 58 61 59
Carbon Steel
(AISI1045) 80 84 82 82
Carbon Steel
(AISI1075) 94 92 96 94

As you can see in the table the carbon steel AISI 1015 is the lower steel from AISI 1045
and AISI 1075 so if the carbon steel is higher the result of the hardness will be higher too.
We can say that the carbon steel is directly proportional to the hardness of the steel.

V. CONCLUSIONS:

Base on the experiment the researcher conclude that the carbon steel is directly
proportional to its hardness, and this will imply that the carbon steel structure is
dependent to the kind of carbon steel that the researcher using. The results shows that the
carbon content directly affects the hardness of the carbon, these hardness result indicates
that the higher carbon content exhibits a higher result as seen in the table that Carbon
Steel (AISI 1075) possess greater hardness than Carbon Steel (AISI 1045) and Carbon
Steel (AISI 1015)
