Question 1

A 39 kW delta-connected motor with a lagging power factor of 0,85 is supplied by a three-phase

star-connected alternator having a line output of 380 V at 50 Hz. The motor has an efficiency of
78 %. Calculate the phase currents for the load and the alternator. Determine the new line current
of the motor, if the supply frequency is changed to 60 Hz. [7]

Question 2

Each phase of a three-phase, delta-connected motor has a resistance of 15  and an inductance

of 0,02 H. The motor has an efficiency of 77 %. It is supplied by a star-connected alternator
having a phase voltage 220V at 50 Hz. Draw a complete circuit diagram. Calculate the motor
phase currents and the motor output power. Also calculate the capacitance required to improve
the power factor to 0, 93 lagging. [8]

Question 3

A 3,3 kV, 50 HZ, three-phase, star connected induction motor, with an output of 100 kW, has a
synchronous speed of 500 r/min. The full-load slip is 1,8 % and the full load power factor is 0,85
lagging. The stator copper loss is 2,44 kW, the stator iron loss is 3,5 kW and the rotational losses
are 1,2 kW. Calculate:
a) the rotor copper loss (PCuR),
b) the line current and
c) the full load efficiency
[7]

Question 4

The open circuit and short circuit tests of a transformer show 200 W and 142 W respectively.
The primary voltage is 380 V when it has a current of 25 A and power factor of 0,8. Find the full
load efficiency and also the efficiency under 30% load conditions. [4]
