SODIUM BICARBONATE

PRISTINE®
342 mg Tablet
ANTACID
FORMULATION:
Each tablet contains:
Sodium Bicarbonate………………………………………………………………………………………………………... 342 mg

DESCRIPTION:
Sodamint is an antacid. The active ingredient in it is sodium bicarbonate. It is used in cases of Cardiac Arrhythmias and Acidosis
(increased acid production in the body). It is also given systemically if the blood pH drops too low, a condition known as Acidosis.

Overdose of this tablet can have dangerous side effects. One should only use it in the prescribed dose.

INDICATIONS:
For the relief of symptoms of hyperacidity (belching, heartburn, acid indigestion, gas pains, gastritis and peptic ulcer). Also used as
urine alkalinizer.

DOSAGE:
Adults: 3 to 6 tablets 4 times a day or as prescribed by thy physician.
Adults: 2 to 4 tablets 3 times a day or as prescribed by the physician.

HOW TO USE PRISTINE®?


Take a Soda mint tablet by mouth, usually every 4 hours as needed or as directed by your doctor. Some tablets should be dissolved in
a glass of water before swallowing. Other tablets may be swallowed whole or dissolved in water before swallowing. Should be taken
with food.

PHARMACOLOGY:
Bicarbonate reacts with H+ ions to form water & carbon dioxide. It acts as a buffer against acidosis by raising blood pH

Its main action is to alkalise the body by neutralizing hydrogen ions. When the acid produced in the stomach increases, symptoms such
as heartburn are common, Sodamint helps neutralize the effects of this acid and gives quick relief.

Absorption: Readily and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal.

Distribution: Present in all body fluids.

Metabolism: Not significantly metabolized.

Excretion: Via urine (<1%).


CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Metabolic or respiratory alkalosis, hypocalcaemia, hypochlorhydria, severe pulmonary oedema, unknown abdominal pain. Conditions
with Na intake restrictions (e.g. renal failure), hypoventilation, history of urinary calculi, coexisting K depletion, hypernatraemia. Patient
with chloride loss due to vomiting or continuous gastrointestinal suction.

HOW SHOULD YOU KEEP THIS MEDICINE?


Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and
pets.
Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is
expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company.

ADVERSE REACTIONS:
Gastrointestinal disorders: Abdominal pain, flatulence, spontaneous stomach rupture, nausea, vomiting, unpleasant
taste.
Metabolism and nutrition disorders: Fluid retention, hypocalcaemia, exacerbated hypokalaemia, loss of appetite.
Musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders: Muscle spasms or cramps.
Nervous system disorders: Headache, restlessness.
Psychiatric disorders: Mood or mental changes, nervousness, extreme irritability.
Renal and urinary disorders: Frequent urge to urinate.

PRECAUTIONS:
Do not take sodium bicarbonate :
● Within 1 to 2 hours of taking other medicine by mouth . To do so may keep the other medicine from working properly.
● For a long period of time . To do so may increase the chance of side effects.

For patients on a sodium-restricted diet :


● This medicine contains a large amount of sodium. If you have any questions about this, check with your health care
professional.

For patients taking this medicine as an antacid :


● Do not take this medicine if you have any signs of appendicitis (such as stomach or lower abdominal pain, cramping, bloating,
soreness, nausea, or vomiting). Instead, check with your doctor as soon as possible.
● Do not take this medicine with large amounts of milk or milk products . To do so may increase the chance of side effects.
● Do not take sodium bicarbonate for more than 2 weeks or if the problem comes back often. Instead, check with your doctor.
Antacids should be used only for occasional relief, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

PREGNANCY & LACTATION:


Pregnancy: Unknown if fetal harm may occur when administered to pregnant females or can affect reproduction capacity. Use if clearly
needed

Lactation: Unknown if excreted in breast milk
