OBJECTIVE
To expose students to basic concepts and principles of air conditioning system –
package and split unit system.
THEORETICAL
Air conditioning (often referred to as AC, A/C, or air con) is the process of removing heat and
moisture from the interior of an occupied space, to improve the comfort of occupants. Air
conditioning can be used in both domestic and commercial environments. This process is most
commonly used to achieve a more comfortable interior environment, typically for humans and
animals; however, air conditioning is also used to cool/dehumidify rooms filled with heat-
producing electronic devices, such as computer servers, power amplifiers, and even to display
and store some delicate products, such as artwork.

PROCEDURES
1) Observe the equipment (split and package unit air conditioning system).
2) Obtain the schematic diagram on the operational mechanism of the split and package
unit air conditioning system.
3) Turn on the switch and leave for 10 minutes before taking the data.
4) Tabulate the data for T1 until T4 in Table.
5) Observe and obtain information regarding the function of each components and
accessories.

DISCUSSION
Air-conditioning is the practice of handling air to meet the needs of the people
who live in the conditioned space. Three main components of air conditioner are
condenser, compressor and evaporator. A condenser (or AC condenser) is the outdoor
component of an air conditioner or heat pump that, depending on the season, either
releases or absorbs heat. The condenser fan is an important part that circulates air
around the coil to help with heat transfer. Since it compresses the refrigerant and
pumps it to a coil as a hot gas, the compressor is the system's core. The refrigerant is
cooled into a warm liquid at the condenser and then passed through a conduit into the
evaporator coil, where it expands and cools. The hot gas is injected directly to the
evaporator coil in heat pumps to supply heat. There are many types of refrigerants such
as R12, R22 and R410A. For this experiment the refrigerant that was used is R410A.
R410a was introduced as a greener alternative to R22 for use in both domestic and
industrial air-conditioning devices due to its properties as an HFC (hydrofluorocarbons)
refrigerant with no ozone depletion risk (Zero ODP). There are many benefits of R410A.
Firstly, reliable, quality assurance, one stop-solution for materials and accessories and
applicable to all types of R410A products. Next, compressor is in charge of transporting
refrigerant between the evaporator and condenser coils, ensuring that it transitions from
gas to liquid when required. The compressor accomplishes this by pumping refrigerant
into the device to keep it alive and well. A faulty compressor will also cause the outside
unit to overheat, the compressor to burn out, and the air conditioning system to stop
working altogether. Besides that, evaporator coil is a key component of an air
conditioner that ensures adequate ventilation in the home or workplace. The air blowing
over the evaporator coil will heat up the refrigerant. When the refrigerant has
accumulated sufficiently heat, it undergoes a process known as latent heat transfer. In
the first experiment, suction temperature, T1 is 20.3ᵒ and the discharge temperature, T2
is 85.3ᵒ, T3 is 36.5ᵒ and T4 is 14.1ᵒ. For the second experiment the suction
temperature, T1 is 20.4ᵒ and the discharge temperature is 88.1ᵒ, T3 is 37.0ᵒ and T4 is
13.2. Lastly, the average for suction temperature, T1 is 20.35ᵒ and the discharge
temperature, T2 is 86.7ᵒ, T3 is 36.75ᵒ and T4 is 13.65ᵒ.

CONCLUSION
Finally, we can conclude that the experiment was a success because we were
able to observe and appreciate the changes in properties when they were handled in a
basic air-conditioning device at the end of it. We now know that air properties change
depending on relative humidity, real humidity, temperature, heat transfer, and air
motion, and that these changes result in different outcomes.
