Profibus DP version 3.01 delivery has started in 03/2003,
Improvement: up to version 3.00 the real time clock synchronisation via Profibus DP is accepted only with fixed time intervals ranging from 50 to 61 seconds.
Synchronisation pulses / telegrams with shorter or longer time intervals are not accepted up to and including version V3.00. From version V3.01 on the following real time
clock synchronisation intervals are allowed for PROFIBUS-DP: 1...15 seconds, 17...20 seconds , 26...30 seconds and 50...61 seconds. Real time clock deviation for more
than 1 minute between two telegrams is accepted instantaneously and forwarded independent of the preceding time synchronisation telegram (for example for a clock
setting operation in the master CPU).

From 05/2003 on the protocol DNP 3.0 is delivered with the version 2.03

Relevant to devices with impedance fault detection: It is strictly advisable to not set all distance zones with
only forward direction.
Zone Z5 must be set as a non-directional final stage. It must include all other zones and also have sufficient
reach in reverse direction. This ensures adequate pickup of the distance protection in response to fault
conditions and correct verification of the short-circuit loops even under unfavourable conditions. Even if you
do not need a non-directional distance stage, you must set Z5 according to the above aspects. Setting T5 to
infinite prevents that this stage causes a trip. (refer to manual Chapter 2.2.2.2 Setting Notes (Distance Zones
with quadrilateral characteristic), Margin heading „Independent Zones Z1 up to Z5“).
In the manual, Chapter 2.2.2.2 Setting Notes (Distance Zones with quadrilateral characteristic), Margin
heading „Resistance Tolerance“ the recommendations regarding zone settings in the R-direction were
updated with more details. Notes for setting and effect of the parameter 1307 „Zone reduction angle“ were
updated. This angle setting can reduce the risk of overreach by distance zone Z1 in the event of faults with
large fault resistance on EHV feeders.

Devices with protection data interface can only be commissioned properly if certain parameters in the
connected devices are set the same. The following parameters are checked by the protection data interface
function:
The communication possibilities are identically to those for the line differential protection devices 7SD52 and
7SD610.
The link to a communications network or a copper wire communication line is made by special
communication converters (7XV5662). These have a fibre optic interface with 820nm and 2 ST plugs to the
protection device. The link to the communication network is optionally an electrical X21-interface or a
G703.1-interface.
For the operation via copper wire communication (pilot wires) a modern communication converter for copper
cables is available now. This operates with both the two-wire and three-wire copper connections which were
used by conventional differential protection systems before.
The communication converter for copper cables is designed for 5 kV insulation voltage. An additional 20 kV
isolation transformer can extend the field of applications of this technique into ranges with higher insulation
voltage requirements. With SIPROTEC4 and the communication converter for copper cables a digital follow-
up technique is available for two-wire protection systems up to 10 km and all three-wire protection systems
using existing copper communication links. Furthermore a communication converter which enables the link to
an ISDN connection via the S0-bus is available.
Communication data:
supported network interfaces G703.1 with 64 kBit/s; X21 with 64 or 128 or 512 kBit/s
max. channel delay time 0.1 ms to 30 ms (in steps of 0.1 ms)
protocol HDLC
32-bit CRC-checksum according to CCITT and ITU
Each protection device possesses a unique relay address
Continuous communication link supervision:
Individual faulty data telegrams do not constitute an immediate danger, if they occur only sporadically. They
are counted in the device, which detects the disturbance, and can be read out under the statistical
information. Thereby the statistical availability, per minute and hour, of the serial protection data interface
can be displayed.
The synchro check function now has a second binary input for initiation from external:
new: 2905 >Start synchro-check for ManualClose (>Sync. Start MC)
text modification: 2906 beforehand: >Start synchro-check; new: >Start synchro-check for AR (>Sync.Start
AR)
It is now also possible to use the synchro-check with the parameters for manual close if the normal manual
close binary input (F.Nr. 356) has to be used independently. This separation is in particular useful for double
circuit-breaker and 1 ½ circuit-breaker applications.
Setting of distance zones and reactance per unit length: The distance zone setting can now be applied with 3
decimal places after the decimal point (previously 2 decimal places). This modification particularly improves
the accuracy of the zone setting for applications to short lines with secondary rated currents of 5 A. With
these applications the secondary impedance values can become very small. The reactance per length unit
(parameter 1110 or 1112) can be adjusted with 4 decimal places after the decimal point (previously 3).
Measured value output via 20 mA analog interface: the max. signal output time can now be set to
180 seconds (beforehand 30 s). This concerns the parameters 5009, 5019, 5029, 5039
The following default settings were changed as a result of operation and testing experience:
parameter 1140 „I-CTsat. Thres. – activation CT saturation detector“: previously = 10 x I/In, new = 20 x I/In
parameter 1215 „Parallel line compensation“: previously = NO, new = YES
parameter 3103 „Block E/F for 1pole dead time“: previously = NO, new = YES
Binary input for voltage transformer miniature circuit breaker (V.T. mcb):
When closing the V.T. mcb (i.e. measuring voltage is switched on) the distance protection blocking is now
maintained for a further 1000 ms. Thus false trip signals can be prevented, if the auxiliary contact of the V.T.
mcb is closes before the main contacts of the V.T. mcb close.
Devices with IEC60870-5-103 protocol
- The operational measured values of the synchro check are now transferred with the extended IEC-103
mode via the system interface (viz. tables in the appendix of the manual).
- The following additional signals are transferred in the compatible mode:
6865 - "Failure Trip Circuit", Type 128, Information-No. 36
7211 - "Backup O/C General Trip" Type 128, Information-No. 72
1494 - "Breaker failure trip T2 (busbar trip)", Type 128, Information-No. 85
Change:
2851 - "AR: Close command" Type 128, Information-No. 128
Devices with Profibus FMS and optical double ring: the failure of a double ring channel is now detected and
alarmed by the device: new alarm outputs ‘Error FMS FO 1 (Error FMS1)‘ and ‘Error FMS FO 2 (Error
FMS2)‘ in the function ‚Device’.
Extension of the measuring voltage monitoring:
If no measuring voltage is available (e.g. no connected voltage transformers) when switching-on the device,
then the absence of the measured voltage is detected and indicated after an adjustable time (parameter
2916, default 3 s) by an additional measured voltage failure monitoring. If the circuit-breaker auxiliary
contacts are used, then these can be utilised for the monitoring. The pickup of this voltage monitoring issues
annunciation no. 168 ‘Failure: Voltage absent (Fail U absent)‘ and switches into the emergency operation
mode. The appropriate monitoring summary alarms are produced accordingly (for function logic and listing of
the summary alarms see manual, chapter 6 under Monitoring functions).

4.4.4 Functioning of the voltage stage 3U0 or Ux when voltage measuring inputs fail (VT – fail)
From V4.22 on the over-voltage protection stage Ux is no longer blocked when VT failure is detected via
binary input or internal measurement (Fuse Failure Monitor or VT mcb).
The reasoning behind this decision is that the VT fail condition usually only relates to the phase voltages and
is not associated with the separate measured voltage Ux (refer to parameter 210 U4-Voltage transformer is =
UX-reference transformer).
4.4.5 Line length can now also be set smaller than 1.0 km
In V4.22 the setting range for parameter 1111 was extended at the lower limit. Previously the range was
between 1.0 and 1000.0 km, the new range is between 0.1 and 1000.0 km.
If this new range is required, the new device firmware V4.22 as well as the new parameter set version V4.22
have to be used.

only forward direction.

Devices with protection data interface can only be commissioned properly if certain parameters in the
connected devices are set the same. The following parameters are checked by the protection data interface
function:
intermediate infeed is switched off. This setting is also recommended if other distance protection devices in
the system operate with similar timer initiation. If absolute time grading is required, for example when the
fault location changes from zone 3 to zone 2, the setting: start timer “with zone pickup” should be selected.
SIPROTEC 4 distance protection with firmware versions upto and including V4.2x use the timer initiation
principle “with zone pickup”. If there are no clearly defined reasons for maintaining this principle, it is
recommended to apply the setting : Condition for zone timer start to “with distance pickup” in parameter 1210
from V4.30 on. This corresponds with the pre-setting applied in the factory for this new parameter.
4.5.4.2 Inclination angle of the quadrilateral distance characteristic can now be set independent of
the line angle with new parameter 1211
To simplify the co-ordination of the SIPROTEC 4 quadrilateral distance characteristics with the
characteristics of other devices it is now possible to apply a separate setting that is independent of the line
angle for the inclination of the distance characteristic. Up to firmware V4.22 the inclination of the distance
characteristic was identical to the line angle (Par. 1105).
Par. 1105
Par. 1211
Note: A new separate setting for the inclination angle of the distance quadrilateral characteristic must be
applied with the parameter 1211 “Angle of Distance charact.” following an upgrade of older parameter sets to
V4.30. Following an automatic upgrade of the parameter set with DIGSI only the line angle setting parameter
1105 “Line Angle“ is adopted. The factory pre-setting of the new parameter 1211“Angle of Distance charact.”
is 85°.
To highlight this situation, the parameter 1211 appears twice in the DIGSI setting pages:
Once in “Settings Group x \ Power System Data 2 \ Power System“ directly below the parameter 1105 and
Once in “Settings Group x \ Distance protection, general settings \ General“.
Parameter 1211 can be set in either location. From the device point of view the parameter 1211 only exists
once, it is merely visible in two locations in DIGSI.
4.5.4.4 Detection of earth faults with I0 and U0: new parameter 1209
In earthed systems with sufficiently large zero sequence voltage during earth faults, e.g. in systems with low
impedance earthing of system neutral point, it may be beneficial to use the simultaneous presence of zero
sequence current and voltage as criterion for earth fault detection. From V4.30 on it is therefore possible to
select with the new parameter 1209 between two alternatives for earth fault detection, the OR combination of
I0 and U0 (as was the case so far) or the AND combination of I0 and U0.
If no clear reasons to the contrary exist, it is recommended that the earth fault detection should furthermore
be done with OR combination of I0 and U0. This corresponds to the factory pre-setting of this parameter.
4.5.4.5 Measuring range following switch on to fault: new setting option “Z1B undirectional“ for
parameter 1232
The parameter 1232 “Instantaneous trip after SwitchOnToFault” was expanded with the setting option "Z1B
undirectional" . The following setting options can now be applied
With Pickup (non-directional)
With Zone1B (with direction as set in parameter 1351)
Inactive
Z1B undirectional
4.5.6.1 Expansion of the over / under frequency protection by a measuring stage with
compounding
From V4.30 on the over voltage protection for the positive sequence system can be selected to include
compounding. This calculates the positive sequence voltage at the remote line end. This function is therefor
particularly suited for the detection of a stationary overvoltage that results from shunt capacitive load of
unloaded or weakly loaded overhead lines (Ferranti Effect). In this case the over voltage is at the remote
end, but it can only be removed by opening the local circuit breaker. To calculate the voltage at the remote
end, the device requires the line data (reactance and shunt capacitance per unit length, the line angle and
line length), that must be set under Power System Data 2.
4.5.7.1 Single pole tripping also for high resistance earth faults
As the earth fault protection uses the zero or negative sequence signals it cannot directly determine the
faulty phase. To achieve single pole tripping and auto reclose for high resistance earth faults despite this, a
phase selection function is provided for the earth fault protection from V4.30 on. This function uses the
distribution of currents and voltages to determine if a single phase or multi phase fault is present and in the
event of a single phase fault, which phase is involved. This also enables single pole tripping for high
resistance faults during which the distance protection does not pick-up.
4.5.7.2 Optimisation of the co-ordination of distance protection and earth fault directional
comparison
From V4.30 on the option exists whereby the earth fault protection tripping is only blocked when distance
protection picks up for faults on the protected feeder. If the earth fault protection tripping must only be
blocked during faults detected in Z1, then the new parameter 3174 “Block E/F for Distance Protection
Pickup“ should be set to “in Zone Z1“. If the earth fault protection tripping must be blocked during faults
detected in Z1 or Z1B, set the address 3174 to “in Zone Z1 / Z1B“. If on the other hand the blocking of the
earth fault protection by the distance protection must be independent of the fault location, then address 3174
should be set to “in each Zone“ .
For better co-ordination between distance protection POTT, earth fault direction comparison and echo
function the V4.30 and newer versions provide some improvements:
An echo is also possible when the earth fault protection is blocked
when the distance protection POTT and earth fault direction comparison function share the same binary
channel then the echo function logic can be adapted by means of the new setting 2509 “Echo logic: Dis and
EF on common channel“.
4.5.7.4 Zero sequence power protection and direction measurement with zero sequence power
From V4.30 on high resistance faults can also be detected using the zero sequence power measuring
principle. The zero sequence power protection uses a power dependant inverse time tripping characteristic.
It may be applied instead of the current dependant inverse time characteristic. The power is calculated with
the zero sequence current and voltage. Of relevance is the component Sr in the direction of a settable
compensation angle ϕComp, that is designated compensated zero sequence power, in other words
Sr = 3I0·3U0·cos(ϕ –ϕComp)
The zero sequence protection is optionally available for the region France, see ordering option.
4.5.8 Protection data interface and communication topology for three terminal applications
In applications with three line ends in conjunction with the protection data interface the devices from V4.30
on have the capability to still transfer remote alarms and commands when one of the 3 communication links
is not functioning or taken out of service. Naturally, remote alarms and commands are in this case only
exchanged between the two devices that are still communicating.
4.5.9.3 Manual Close can also release Z1B in “undirectional” mode: new parameter 1232
Line closure is – as was previously the case – also activated by the Manual Close binary input.
4.5.10.1 Initial measured values in the display are selectable: new parameter 640
After start up (power on) the devices with 4 line display will by default show measured values. By means of
the cursor keys different measured value representations can be selected for the so called initial display.
From V4.30 on the default first page of the initial display after start up can be selected with the parameter
640 “Start image Default Display“. The available measured value representations are shown in the appendix
of the device manual.
From V4.30 on the same measured voltages as available in the 7SJ62/63/64 are shown in the initial display.
From V4.30 on a new initial display page is available that only shows the measured operational currents, see
initial display no. 5.
4.5.10.2 Sign of the measured power and energy can be selected: new parameter 1107
The operational measured values that are dependant on a direction (power, power factor, energy and the
associated min, max, average and threshold values) usually have their positive direction sense defined as
towards the protected plant. This presupposes that the polarity of the terminations for the entire device are
set accordingly in the Power System Data 1 (refer to “CT Starpoint” in Address 201).
From V4.30 on the “forward” direction of the protection and the positive direction for the power measurement
etc. can be set differently to for example obtain a positive value for the real power flow (from the line towards
the busbar). A new parameter 1107 “P,Q operational measured values sign” was introduced for this purpose.
4.5.10.3 Display of the sync check measured values without sync check measurement initiation
The operational measured values that are measured or calculated by the sync check function were, in the
firmware versions up to V4.22, only available when the sync check measurement was initiated by
measurement request.
From V4.30 on the sync check measured values are also calculated when no measurement request was
initiated – naturally the sync check function must be available.
4.5.13 New binary input for resetting of the 20mA analogue output (only 7SA6)
For dedicated reset of a measured value, that is output as analogue value via a 20 mA interface, a new
binary input (No. 11000) 'Reset Analog Outputs' is available from V4.30 on.

Relevant to devices with impedance fault detection: It is strictly advisable to not set all distance
zones with only forward direction.
Zone Z5 must be set as a non-directional final stage. It must include all other zones and also have
sufficient reach in reverse direction. This ensures adequate pickup of the distance protection in
response to fault conditions and correct verification of the short-circuit loops even under
unfavourable conditions. Even if you do not need a non-directional distance stage, you must set
Z5 according to the above aspects. Setting T5 to infinite prevents that this stage causes a trip.

Note: Parameter sets that erroneously have timer modules in the CFC-processing priority class
Measured Value Processing (MW_BEARB) or Interlocking (SFS_BEARB), are rejected by the
device from version V4.35 on. The device remains in the blocked state after the parameter set is
loaded! Prior to loading the parameter set the CFC chart if necessary must be corrected (also
refer to Chapter 5, PMS-Fault No. 909).
Parameter set upgrades from older versions to V4.60: If 7SA-Parameter sets are upgraded with
DIGSI V4.60 to suit Firmware Version V4.60, then unexpected annunciations by the device may
occur after restart. E.g. non plausible Earth Fault annunciations may be generated even if no
measured values are applied to the device or if the device does not contain this functionality. This
obviously incorrect response occurs when the CFC charts contained in the parameter set are
converted/compiled again following the upgrade.
To avoid this problem DIGSI V4.60 must be run with Servicepack 1 (SP1). If DIGSI Servicepack 1
(SP1) is not yet installed the CFC chart in the 7SA-Parameter set V4.60 must be
converted/compiled once following the parameter set upgrade.
From version V4.60 on the Device Help Function in DIGSI (from DIGSI V4.6 on) may be used
for 7SA devices. The matching help file is/was supplied together with the Servicepack 1 for DIGSI
V4.60. Due to memory storage capacity the 7SA6 Help-files are only included with the device
driver for 7SA610. To obtain the device help function for all 7SA6 devices (7SA611, 7SA612…),
the Help-file must be copied several times in the relevant DIGSI directories on your PC using
Windows-Explorer. Detailed information can be found in the description
DIGSI_DeviceHelp_Function.pdf. The Help-file may also be found in the SIPROTEC download
area of the Internet.
4.10.6 Distance protection zones in 7SA6 with optional circular tripping characteristic
7SA6 Devices can since version V4.40 and now also from version V4.60 on be optionally applied
with polygonal or newly with circular tripping characteristic. The circular tripping characteristic is
commonly applied in medium voltage cable networks with very small line angle. Furthermore for
proper zone grading it is sensible to initially also apply the 7SA6 with circular tripping
characteristic when it is used to replace relays with circular tripping characteristic. A later change
to the more flexible polygonal tripping characteristic can be considered.
The circular tripping characteristic (see diagram below) consists of two segments of a circle about
the origin of the R/X-plane. It may not be confused with the MHO characteristic for ANSI
influenced markets. This MHO characteristic is still available in the 7SA522.
The nature of the zone characteristic can be selected with the new parameter 115 'Dis charact.' In
accordance with this scope of functions setting only the required zone setting parameters in the
parameter blocks 13xx and 15xx are visible and accessible.
4.10.7 C-IO2 with removable common root for 5 output contacts and normally open/closed
change over selection for 2 additional output contacts
Since the middle of 2004 the 7SA devices of the SIPROTEC 4 range are delivered with a modified
C-IO2 module. The modified module with the version number -7 provides for the following:
The common root of the output contacts BA1 up to BA5 can be removed via jumper selection.
The standard 5 output relays with common root can then be changed to 3 fully segregated output
relays. Two contacts cannot be used in this configuration.
The output contacts BA7 and BA8 can be selected as normally open or normally closed.
Detailed information can be found in the 7SA manual V4.6. In the Appendix A.2 the terminal
allocation of the devices in accordance with the jumper selection is shown. Further information
regarding the module design are given in Chapter 3 „Mounting and Commissioning“.
The WEB Monitor can be operated via the front, service or the Ethernet interface. The WEB
Monitor as well as the associated documentation can be found on the CD 1 of DIGSI V4.60.
One example for the application of this function is the indication of capacitive reactive power flow
(VAR import). This indication can then be used to supervise the over-voltage protection. For this
purpose two angle settings must be applied as indicated in the diagram below. In this example the
settings ϕA = 200° and ϕB = 340° are applied. If the measured phase angle ϕ(S1) of the positive
sequence power is inside the range in the P-Q plane defined by the angles ϕA and ϕB , then the
annunciation No. 130 „ϕ(PQ Pos. Seq.)“ is generated. The angle ϕA and ϕB can be set to any
value in the range 0° up to 359° . The range starts at ϕA and is mathematically increased with a
positive sense up to the angle ϕΒ. A hysteresis of 2° avoids incorrect indications that could arise
close to the boundaries.
A further application is the indication of negative real power flow. For this function the range must
be defined as follows:
The output signal of the power direction monitoring may be coupled via CFC to the function
„External direct and remote tripping“ to obtain tripping of the circuit breaker with the functionality
reverse power protection.
The power direction monitoring has 4 setting parameters (No. 2941 up to 2944) in the Function
block „Measurement supervision“.
The pickup by the frequency protection was due to the voltage signal used for frequency
measurement. In the 7SA* devices up to and including version V4.35 the largest phase-ground
voltage is used for the frequency measurement. Although the largest phase-ground voltage is not
directly associated with the earth fault, resonance factors during the earth fault cause a significant
disturbance of the frequency measurement.
Remedy: The frequency protection in the new versions uses the phase-phase voltage.
(refer also to Functional limitation 925).
4.10.12 Reset of trip command may now be selected to be independent of load current with
reset of the pick-up condition
Previously the trip command in SIPROTEC distance protection (V3 and V4) was reset when the
phase current drops below the setting threshold „I open pole” (Parameter 1130).
This mode of operation is in general a very safe technique to avoid inadvertent opening of the trip
relay contacts while current is still flowing via the trip coils.
Address 1135 Reset Trip Cmd. determines which criteria are used to reset the trip command
once it has been issued. For special applications in which the device trip will not always result in
complete interruption of the current flow it is possible to set in devices from version V4.60 on that
the trip command must be reset by Pickup reset. In this case the trip command is reset when the
protection function that caused the trip command resets and – as is also the case for the other trip
command reset setting options (with pole open current only and CBaux AND pole open
current) – the minimum trip command duration (Address 240) has expired.
The setting Pickup reset is for example useful if during testing of the protection device the load
current flowing through the feeder can not be interrupted so that the test current is injected in
parallel with the load current.
Further applications exist when the protection device issuing the trip command is not activating its
own circuit breaker, but rather the trip command is used to operate a different circuit breaker.
4.10.14 IEC60870-5-103 Protocol: Type and Info number can be changed with DIGSI
From V4.60 on the Type and Info number of all annunciations, also the predefined ones, may be
changed by the user with DIGSI for use in the IEC60870-5-103 Protocol.
4.10.15 Breaker Failure Protection: Separate and independent setting of Phase current and
Earth current threshold
Previously only one current setting threshold which applies to both phase and earth current
monitoring was available in the breaker fail protection. For dependable 2 out of 4 monitoring it
must be ensured that this threshold is also exceeded during earth faults with very small earth fault
current. Consequently this threshold is typically set in the load current range.
Certain users want to set the monitoring threshold of the breaker fail protection above the
maximum expected load current. To also obtain the 2 out of 4 monitoring during earth faults with
small earth current level the phase and earth current thresholds may be set separately from V4.60
on.
The mode of operation of the breaker fail protection is selected with the Device Configuration
setting parameter 139. When set to enabled the breaker failure protection operates in the
compatible mode, i.e. in the same manner as the older firmware versions. When selected to the
new setting option enabled with 3I0> an additional separate setting threshold for the earth
current is available: The new parameter 3912 Pickup threshold3I0> is accessible with this
setting.
4.10.16 Automatic reclosing AR: Optimised for the accelerated zone tripping
If the AR zone release for accelerated tripping is to be used, the SIPROTEC 4 distance protection
devices provide the functions RDT (reduced dead time) and ADT (adaptive dead time).
Where the SIPROTEC V3 device was set to „3U0 Processing - 1-POLE WITH U0“ , the
SIPROTEC 4 device is now set to operate with the ADT- function including the release for single
pole faults. The SIPROTEC 4 device that has to correspond to the V3 AR setting „3U0 Processing
- 1-POLE W / O U0 “ is now set to „RDT“.
To obtain the same functionality with SIPROTEC 4 devices as was provided by the SIPROTEC
V3 devices, the response of the RDT function with regard to Z1B release was changed in the
firmware versions from V4.60 on. The distance zone Z1B is now always released following
reclosure by an AR function set to RDT if the (normal) dead time 3456 „AR Tdead1Trip (dead time
following 1 pole trip)“ or 3457 „AR Tdead3Trip (dead time following 3 pole trip)“ has expired. As no
healthy voltage could be measured during the dead time it is in this case safe to assume that the
feeder is still open at the remote end. It is therefore permitted and desirable to have the
overreaching zone active with reclosure to detect and clear faults on the entire line without time
delay.
The changes do not affect the zone release in the case of faster/reduced dead time reclosure.
These are always without Z1B release similar to an AR cycle without RDT.
Furthermore a new annunciation 2857 is generated: „AR CLOSE RDT DT after expiry of the dead
time“. It indicates that the AR function operating in the RDT mode has issued a close command
following expiry of a (normal) set dead time.

4.10.17 Detection of a circuit breaker single pole open condition with voltage transformers
connected to the busbar side of the CB
The existing logic for detection of the single pole open condition of the circuit breaker was
extended for applications with voltage transformers connected to the busbar side of the circuit
breaker. From V4.60 on the phase selective circuit breaker auxiliary contacts are also monitored
(also refer to manual chapter „Function Control and Circuit Breaker Test“, Figure „Open pole
detector logic“).
4.10.18 Recognition of line closure now following a settable minimum open time
Up to version V4.3 the recognition of line closure was possible when the condition „open pole“
was detected and present for at least 250 ms.
From version V4.60 on this minimum time can be set. The preset time for the relevant new
parameter 1133 „minimal time for line open before SOTF, T DELAY SOTF“ is 250 ms (refer also
to the manual chapter „Function Control and Circuit Breaker Test“, Logic diagram „Generation of
the energization signal“).
Setting a longer time than 250 ms is for example sensible if line closure detection is not desired
when reclosure takes place due to an automatic reclosure. In this case the parameter 1133 must
be set longer than the relevant dead time.
All U> and U< stages now have a settable reset ratio. Up to V4.3x only the reset ratio of the U>
stages was settable. New parameters: 3759, 3769, 3779.
For each measuring system it is now possible to set Stage 1 to „alarm only“ and Stage 2 to „with
trip“. Up to V4.3x it was only possible to set both stages of a measuring system together to either
„alarm only“ or to „trip“. The following parameters were extended with the option „U> Alarm U>>
Trip“ :
3701, 3711, 3721, 3731, 3741.
The setting option „U< Alarm U<< Trip“ is available for the following parameters: 3751, 3761,
3771.
(Note: please observe Functional Limitation 938).
For the phase selective over / under voltage phase-earth and phase-phase measuring systems
new annunciations are generated from V4.60 on. Information regarding the phase pick-up is now
indicated separately for each stage.
New signals
10248 (Uph-e> Pickup L1)…10253 (Uph-e>> Pickup L3),
10263 (Uph-ph> Pickup L1-L2)…10268 (Uph-ph>> Pickup L3-L1),
10318 (Uph-e< Pickup L1)…10323 (Uph-e<< Pickup L3),
10333 (Uph-ph<< Pickup L1-L2)…10338 (Uph-ph<< Pickup L3-L1).
4.10.20 Over current protection: I>>>stage (Stub protection) is now also available in
devices with the region code „GE“
In devices with the region coding „GE“ (MLFB Position 10 = „A“) from firmware V4.60 on the
additional overcurrent protection stage I>>> (Stub protection) is also available. Up to version
V4.3x this stage was only available in devices for the regions „World“, „US“ and „FR“.
4.10.21 Synchronism Check: New state indications and modified setting ranges
From V4.60 on there are 6 new state indications available in the synch check function. They
indicate the reason why the sync check function did not provide a „release”.
2978 = Udiff exceeded because busbar voltage Usyn > feeder voltage Uline
2979 = Udiff exceeded because busbar voltage Usyn < feeder voltage Uline
2980 = Frequency difference exceeded because busbar frequency > feeder frequency
2981 = Frequency difference exceeded because busbar frequency < feeder frequency
2982 = Angle difference exceeded because busbar angle φsyn > feeder angle φline
2983 = Angle difference exceeded because busbar angle φsyn < feeder angle φline
The permissible upper setting limits for the parameter 3511 „Max. Volt. Diff“ and 3531 „Manual
Close max. Volt. Diff“ were extended from V4.60 on from 40 V to 60 V.
The permissible setting range for parameter 3502 “Dead Voltage Threshold” was changed from
1…60V to 1…100V.
The extension of the setting ranges does not affect the functionality of devices that are changed
from older versions to V4.60 via the parameter set upgrade function in DIGSI.
4.10.23 Improvement for the routing and allocation of Annunciations and Commands
Commands can now be routed with „Destination CFC“ without the necessity to also route them to
binary inputs or outputs in parallel.
Protection tripping/AR closing and Trip command/Close command from the control functions can
now be assigned to the same contacts.
4.10.24 Port B (preferably for system interface) may now be utilised as serial optical
service interface (DIGSI/Modem)
Devices with C-CPU2 (7SA6 amongs others), could previously only have an optical Service
Interface for DIGSI/Modem by application of an external converter to Port C, may now utilise the
optical interface in Port B for this purpose. This interface can then not be used as System
Interface for connection to Substation Control. A parallel operation of DIGSI/Modem and
Substation Control protocols on Port B is therefore not possible, this also applies to the
IEC60870-5-103 (VDEW) Protocol.
(refer to manual Chapter 2.2.2.2 Setting Notes (Distance Zones with quadrilateral characteristic),
Margin heading „Independent Zones Z1 up to Z5“).
In the manual, Chapter 2.2.2.2 Setting Notes (Distance Zones with quadrilateral characteristic),
Margin heading „Resistance Tolerance“ the recommendations regarding zone settings in the R-
direction were updated with more details. Notes for setting and effect of the parameter 1307
„Zone reduction angle“ were updated. This angle setting can reduce the risk of overreach by
distance zone Z1 in the event of faults with large fault resistance on EHV feeders.
Devices with protection data interface can only be commissioned properly if certain parameters in
the connected devices are set the same. The following parameters are checked by the protection
data interface function:
The system neutral of the protected systems was resonant grounded via Peterson coil. An earth
fault was present in the system during the incorrect measurement.
Notes for users with IEC61850: In principle an update of the parameter set from V4.60 to V4.61
with DIGSI is possible. However the ‚Basic Profile’, for the IEC61850 functions, created for the
V4.60 parameter set is presently not taken into account during updating of the parameter set. This
feature will only be available from DIGSI V4.71 on, which is scheduled for release at the end of
December 2005.
The description file IEC61850 of a device with which a system configuration functions is the ICD
file. The new names are imported in this file only if a system interface relevant change is effected
in the DIGSI configuration matrix (for example if a message is configured or de-configured on the
system interface). With this modification and the storing in DIGSI, the new names are written in
the ICD file.
Now the system configurator must be opened and the necessary modifications must be effected
manually (see also point 2). Afterwards, the ICD file must be actualized and the station
interconnecting SCD file created (exported). The corresponding parameter sets must now be
loaded in the devices.
b) Control system
If the new names were ever used in the ICD file, the SCD file must be re-actualized (exported)
and the control system imported. Otherwise, there is no connection between devices and control
system.
According to the changed LN names, effecting further modifications on the control system might
be necessary.
4.13.4 IEC61850, interlocking control devices: wrong display of results on the control
system side / wrong description text in IEC61850 System configurator
If interlocking conditions are defined for control devices, then the result of the interlocking in
direction IEC61850 is mapped via the Logical Node (LN) “CILO” of the corresponding control
device.
Interlocking conditions for switching a control device in direction ON and OFF has to be
differentiated. The result of the interlocking conditions is shown in direction IEC via the following
objects.
Switching direction IEC objects relative to the result of the Description text in the system
locking conditions (of LN CILO) configurator (clear text)
ON EnaCls (Enable Close) Release ON
OFF EnaOpn (Enable Open) Release OFF
In direction IEC61850, the result objects „EnaCls“ and „EnaOpn“ are exchanged. This means that
in the object for „EnaCls“, the result is that of the locking conditions for switching direction OFF
instead of switching direction ON and vice-versa.
This causes errors if the results (states of the locking conditions) are further processed by the
control system. The locking in the device itself is not concerned and is effected correctly.
This error is removed with:
Another error in this regard concerns the description texts (clear texts) in the system configurator.
These are also exchanged. This means that the description text “Release OFF” is spuriously
assigned to the IEC object „EnaCls“ and vice-versa.
This error is removed with:

4.13.6 Change of annunciation / parameter and measured value texts for applications with
voltage transformers connected at the busbar side
Some annunciation and parameter texts were changed to avoid misunderstandings with
application of the synchro check function together with voltage transformers connected to the
busbar side.
Previously the texts were such that the 3 phase connected voltage transformer was always
assumed to be located on the line side of the circuit breaker and the synchronising voltage (U4 =
Usyn) was always measured on the busbar side.
The new texts now refer to the two measuring locations Usy1 and Usy2. Measuring location Usy1
is the side at which the 3 phase voltage transformers are connected and measuring location Usy2
is the side at which the (single pole) synchronising voltage (U4 Voltage transformer = Usy2
transformer) is connected.
In the following table the old text (black) is shown in the first line while the new text (blue) is
shown in the second line.
From V4.61 on in devices with the ordering option "Region Germany" (MLFB-Position 10 = "A")
the I-stub stage of the back-up over-current protection is only visible when the scope of functions
parameter 126 is set to the newly introduced setting option (only visible with region Germany)
„Time Overcurrent Curve IEC w. 3rd stage“. It is thereby avoided that the stage is activated
following an upgrade of older parameter sets unless the user consciously selects this option. For
other regions where the I-stub stage was always already visible, nothing is changed, and the new
setting option is also not visible.
From V4.61 on a new parameter 1136 "Open Pole Detector" was therefore introduced. The pre-
setting from the factory is ‚with measurement’ and corresponds to the functionality as available in
the older firmware versions where this parameter was not yet available.
For applications with very weak infeed, where the short circuit current can be in the range of the
setting threshold 1130 ‚PoleOpenCurrent’, the ‚Pole Open Detector’ can be set to use the auxiliary
contacts or alternatively may also be disabled entirely (refer to manual, ‚V4.61 and higher’)
4.13.9 Additional operating mode for the Earth Fault Protection with 1pole auto-reclosure,
new parameters and annunciations
The earth fault protection must be blocked during single-pole automatic reclose dead time to
avoid pick-up with the false zero sequence values and, if applicable, the negative sequence
values arising during this state.
The new parameter 238 EarthFltO/C 1p determines the behavior for single pole tripping and for
blocking during the single pole dead time.
Note: Stages of the earth fault protection that should not be blocked during the single pole dead
time are also not blocked when this earth fault stage itself issues a single pole trip command.
Fault detection and trip command of the earth fault protection can therefore only reset if the earth
current resulting from the single pole open condition is less than the pick-up threshold of such a
stage.
With stage selective blocking of the earth fault protection during the single pole dead time new
separate blocking signals for each stage are generated. („14080: E/F 3I0>>> BLOCK“,
„14081: E/F 3I0>> BLOCK“, „14082: E/F 3I0> BLOCK“, „14083: EF 3I0p BLOCK“ ).
If all the earth fault stages are blocked together during the single pole dead time the signal „1332:
EF BLOCK“ is activated for the duration of the single pole dead time.

(PMS 1050, ERR_24528 and PMS 991, ERR_20930, ERR_24183 and PMS 1012, ERR_23984)
We would like to inform you here about two events that came to our attention in the course of our
product monitoring. In both cases it was an under-function of relays applied in systems with
resonant / isolated neutral grounding:
During a 2 phase short circuit involving ground and high fault current level (approx. 12 x In) in a
20 kV system with resonant grounded neutral a 7SA6 device once failed to trip within a time span
of 200 ms. The device was operating with over-current (I>) fault detection.
A detailed analysis indicated that the device response was associated with the execution
sequence in the event of detected CT saturation. Of central importance is the setting applied to
the parameter I-CT sat thresh. (1140). In the case at hand the short circuit current exceeded the
set threshold. During the entire fault duration a 3rd harmonic current of approximately 10% was
present.
In the course of the fault tripping would have been released if the harmonic current component/
saturation had declined or reset. When applying over-current fault detection (I>), voltage
dependant over-current fault detection (U< / I>) and voltage and angle dependant over-
current fault detection (U< / I> / phi) a trip would have been issued after the Trip delay for non-
directional pickup (parameter 1603). For applications with impedance fault detection (Z<)
there is no Trip delay for non-directional pickup available. The behavior is independent from
the setting of parameter 1220 „Phase preference for 2ph-e faults“.
As the occurrence of a similar incident in future cannot be excluded we recommend a firmware
upgrade to the version V4.61 or deactivation of the saturation detection. If a firmware upgrade is
not done the CT saturation detection should be deactivated by changing the setting of parameter
I CTsat. thresh (1140) to ineffective (= infinity). The non-availability of the saturation detection
will to a small extent reduce the distance zone reach accuracy. It is however still sufficient as it is
comparable to the SIPROTEC 3 distance protection 7SA51 reach accuracy.
The measures described apply to all 7SA6/7SA522 devices, applied in systems with resonant /
isolated neutral grounding, that have a firmware version <V4.61.
In a 30kV system with resonant grounded neutral a 7SA6 device in one case only picked up after
300 ms following a three phase fault. The device was applied with impedance fault detection (Z<).
The short circuit conditions were unusual as zero sequence voltage was measured although
almost no zero sequence current was present.
Detailed analysis indicated that the cause for the device response was in the algorithm used to
select the faulted impedance loop. As a similar occurrence in future, in systems with resonant /
isolated neutral grounding, cannot be excluded it is recommended for applications with
impedance fault detection (Z<) to execute a firmware upgrade to version V4.61 or to deactivate
the earth fault detection with zero sequence voltage.
If a firmware upgrade is not done, the parameter 3U0> COMP/ISOL (1205) should be set to its
maximum value of 200V sec. The factory presetting of this parameter is 40 V. The dynamic
delay time T3I0 1phas (Parameter 1206) will be correctly started in the event of single phase fault
detection independent of the presence of zero sequence voltage. However following the change
of parameter 3U0> COMP/ISOL every single phase fault detection will be delayed by the time
T3I0 1phas even if it is due to a double earth fault with one fault location on a radial feeder. T3I0
1phas is typically set to 40 ms.
The function whereby, in the absence of zero sequence current fault detection (3I0>), the phase-
earth loops are still released for measurement when there is multiple phase fault detection and
zero sequence voltage above the threshold 3U0 COMP/ISOL is also not available. The device
response in this regard is then identical to the SIPROTEC 3 distance protection devices 7SA51.
The two disadvantages that are described here are both considered to be far less critical than the
blocking of the impedance measurement.
The described measures apply to all 7SA6/7SA522 devices with impedance fault detection (Z<),
applied in systems with resonant/isolated neutral grounding, that have a firmware version <V4.61.
The probability that one of the above under-functions occurs is very small. The described
incidents have each only been observed once within a total operating time of more than 20000
years with the SIPROTEC 4 distance protection devices 7SA522 / 7SA6.
4.13.11 Approved Distance protection response during single and double ground faults in
systems with resonant (Peterson coil) / isolated neutral grounding using new
voltage symmetry criterion, new parameter (1223) Max Uph-ph unbal. for 1ph flt.
detection
A few users issued complaints in respect of a few unwanted trips by the distance protection upon
inception of single phase ground faults in systems with isolated / resonant grounded neutral.
This behaviour was caused by the triggering of the fault detection delay time for single phase fault
detection T3I0 1phas (Parameter 1206). The objective of this time delay is to prevent fault
detection or trip by the distance protection due to the normal fault inception transients that occur
with single phase faults. To avoid unnecessary delays when the single ground fault evolves to a
double ground fault (cross country fault), of which the distance protection only detects one foot
point, the delay time was previously not restarted if at the instant of single phase fault detection
zero sequence voltage is already present. The pick-up threshold valid for this purpose is
parameter 1205, 3U0> COMP/ISOL. This steering of the delay time depending on the presence of
zero sequence voltage exist in all SIPROTEC 7SA distance protection devices since approx. 12
years.
From V4.61 on the steering of the delay time for single phase fault detection (parameter 1206) is
now independent of the presence of zero sequence voltage. A new symmetry condition was
introduced. It monitors the symmetry of all phase-phase voltages. If the distance protection
recognises a single phase fault and at the same time determines that the phase-phase voltages
are symmetrical, the fault detection is prevented for the time T3I0 1PHAS. If on the other hand the
phase-phase voltages are not symmetrical a double phase to ground fault is determined and the
delay time is not retriggered. To configure the symmetry criterion from V4.61 on a new parameter
(1223) Max Uph-ph unbal. for 1ph flt. detection was introduced. The default setting in the
parameter set V4.61 is 25%.
From V4.61 on the zero sequence voltage (parameter 1205, 3U0> COMP/ISOL) is only used as
fault detection criterion if in the case of non-symmetrical phase-phase voltages no or only a very
small amount of zero sequence current flow is present at the relay location.
The new version V4.61 will therefore be able to distinguish between single and double ground
faults far more securely in future. In certain double ground fault cases, when the distance
protection only detects one of the fault locations and with only a small amount of phase-phase
voltage non-symmetry, suppression of the fault detection for the duration of the delay time T3I0
1PHAS is also possible. None desired pick-up or trip due to single phase ground faults, also in the
case of retriggered ground faults in the same phase, should however be something of the past
from V4.61 on.

Power Swing Detection
IEC61850
The versions of the system firmware V4.52.09 and the boot system V1.07.01 remain unchanged
compared with the previous firmware version.
4.16.2 Teleprotection: Tripping with weak or no infeed with relative voltage jump pickup
according to French specification
Compared with V4.62, the function was changed as follows:
From V4.63 on the pick-up is reset as soon as the trip command is issued. A further pick-up is
only possible if the under-voltage threshold is again exceeded for a minimum of 1 sec.
From V4.63 on the function is only blocked when the distance protection function picks up.
Previously earth fault protection and over-current protection also blocked this function.
In the case of pick-up by the stage “trip with delay” as well as expiry of the time stages 2515 TM
and 2516 TT the pick-up and the “time delayed under-voltage stage” are reset, if a trip command
has not been issued up until this point in time.
The operating mode address 2531 “Weak infeed delayed” can also be set to the “OFF” state from
V4.63 on.
4.16.3 Power Swing detection: New information 4177 „Power swing unstable 2“
Dist
RFD-POL
R
The criterion for a “power swing trip” is a change of the sign (from positive to negative or vice
versa) of the resistance and exit from the fault detection polygon on the opposite side of the side
at which entry to the polygon took place. For power swing trip to take place the parameter 2006
“PowerSwing trip“ must be set to “YES”. The annunciation „Power Swing unstable“ (4163) is
always issued independent of the parameter setting. The response described here remains
unchanged as it was in the versions preceding V4.63.
From V4.63 on a further annunciation, “Power Sing unstable 2“ (4177) which already picks up
when the centre of the polygon is crossed, exists. By means of this annunciation asynchronous
power swings can be detected earlier. “Power Swing unstable 2” may optionally be processed
further in CFC logic.
The following functional limitations from previous versions have been remedied with version V4.65

Tripping in case of weak and zero infeed
IEC61850
The versions of the system firmware V4.53.14 and the boot system V1.11.01 or V2.01.01 have
been changed compared with the previous firmware version.
4.17.3 Earth fault detection in systems with resonant grounded or isolated neutral point
The distance protection should not pick-up due to simple ground faults in systems with resonant
grounded or isolated neutral point. For this purpose the threshold of residual current set with
parameter “1203 3I0 threshold for neutral current pickup” should be set above the largest steady
state ground current that can flow during a simple ground fault. To prevent earth fault detection
during the transient immediately after inception of the simple ground fault, the timer “1206A Delay
1ph-faults (comp/isol. Star-point)” is set to typically 40ms. During this time the transient current
flow will not result in ground fault pick-up.
During double ground faults, the distance protection should detect this and then measure the
affected ground loops. Tripping should be according to the set preference, parameter 1220.
Generally the detection of the double ground fault is by pick-up of the ground current detection
threshold – in relays B1 and B2 below.
As shown above the relays A and C do not detect any residual fault current (3I0 = zero). Relays in
such a position can only detect the double ground fault due to the presence of zero sequence
voltage (threshold set with parameter 1205 3U0> pickup (comp/isol. Star-point)) and the presence
of non-symmetry of ph-ph voltages (parameter 1223). It must be noted that measurement with
ground loops when there is only insignificant zero sequence (earth fault current) is subject to
errors. There have been incidents with Zone 1 overreach under these conditions. The default
setting of the parameter “1205 3U0> pickup (comp/isol. Star-point)” will therefore be changed to
infinity “oo” from parameter set version V4.65 on. With this setting the ground loops will only be
released for measurement when the residual current threshold set with parameter “1203 3I0
threshold for neutral current pickup” is exceeded and there is no risk of overreach with ground
loops.
At least for the following applications it is recommended to use the new parameter set version

been changed compared with the previous firmware version.

Station C IL

The figure above shows an application where a distance protection with tele-protection
supplement operates as a back up protection for the ring installation. In this application a fault on
the line between Station A and Station C is assumed. Furthermore it is assumed that the relay in
station C clears the fault while the relay in station A does not clear the fault e.g. due to a CB –
failure. Both distance protection at the Infeed detect the fault and send tele-protection signals
(POTT) when the fault is detected in Z1B.
As the tele-protection is applied as back-up the distance protection may not trip the fault
immediately when the signal is received, only after expiry of the grading time (t-Z1B). Now the
relay at the right hand side resets its Z1B PU and stops sending its tele-protection signal, because
the relay in station C has cleared the fault from this side. The relay at the left hand side still has
PU-Conditions (Z1B, due to the CB-failure of the relay in station A).
To allow for back-up operation of the tele-protection scheme, the receive signal from the relay at
the right hand side is memorized as long as the Z1B is picked-up at the left side. Now when the
Z1B-Timer expires the back-up trip can take place at the left side of the Infeed. The memorized
tele-protection receive signal is immediately reset when the Z1B pick-up drops off.
From V4.70 on the parameter Mem.rec.sig. (address 2113) is available. It may be used with the
schemes PUTT (Z1B), POTT and UNBLOCKING. If the parameter Mem.rec.sig. (address 2113)
is set to YES and the distance protection has a Z1B pick-up, the phase-selective release via the
tele-protection is stored. Storing the signal receipt makes sense if the tele-protection is used in
ring networks as a backup protection with grading time.
From V4.70 on it is possible to compensate the influence of the series capacitor on the measured
zero sequence voltage. The voltage dropped over the series capacitor is calculated:
This UCO is then subtracted from the measured zero sequence voltage 3U0meas as shown in the
figure above. The resulting voltage 3U0Dir is then used for the directional characteristic of the
earth fault protection.
4.19.6 Improved sensitivity of 67N direction measurement on long lines, new parameter
3186 3U0< forward
In case of forward faults on very long lines, the zero-sequence voltage required to determine the
direction may become very small. The reason for this is the high ratio between the zero-sequence
impedance of the line and the infeed (source).
For reverse faults, on the other hand, the zero sequence voltage cannot drop that low if at the
same time the zero sequence current exceeds the set pickup level. For this reason the "forwards"
direction may be defined when the zero sequence voltage is below the threshold value set at
parameter 3186 3U0< forward.
This eliminates problems with direction measurement sensitivity for high resistance faults on long
lines.
4.19.7 Setting option for Parameter 1232 “Zone 1 non-directional” during SOTF
In some applications it is desirable to have non-directional tripping when energizing onto a fault.
This applies, for example, when energizing a dead bus with a live line. If the Z1B stage or general
“Pick-Up” is applied with line closure detection (parameter 1232) the non-directional condition
could be set. From parameter set V4.70 on the setting options have been expanded to also allow
Zone 1 non-directional tripping with SOTF.
4.19.8 A separate current threshold setting for release of Zone 1 trip is included
In some applications it may be desirable to apply a separate current threshold for the release of
instantaneous Zone 1 trip; this is possible from V4.70 on. If this is desired the parameter “0119
Additional Threshold Iph> (Z1)” must be enabled in the Functional Scope. If this is done the new
setting parameter “1308 Minimum current for Z1 only Iph>” is available. The Zone 1 trip will only
be release when the phase current is above this setting.
4.19.9 Setting option for Weak In-feed trip when current flow is zero
A weak in-feed trip, without CB status information from auxiliary contacts, is only possible when
the pole open current threshold is exceeded. This increases the security against issuing a trip
signal onto an open circuit breaker together with initiation of auto re-closure. In some applications
it may however be desirable to also issue weak in-feed trip when the current is less than the pole
open threshold without connecting the circuit breaker auxiliary contacts. From V4.70 on this is
possible by setting the option “Echo and Trip (I=0)” at parameter 2501 Weak In-feed function.
4.19.12 Improved directional sensitivity for 3phase faults during power swing
During power swings the “rotor angles” of the sources are changing dynamically so that the
memory voltage has limited suitability for stable direction measurement in this state. For three
phase faults there is also no negative sequence voltage. To provide maximum security a new
direction decision for 3 phase faults during power swing has been implemented using delta
quantities. (ERR_34937)
4.19.13 Breaker fail protection for phase selective (1-/3-phase) start signal: Optimized logic
for control of the delay timers
The logic for triggering of the delay timers in the two stage breaker fail protection was optimized in
terms of the phase selective start signals with the following points.
• An additional binary input 1424 „>BF STARTonlyT2“ makes it possible, from V4.70 on, to
directly start the timer stage T2 by bypassing the first time stage T1. This start signal may for
example be derived from a busbar protection trip command which has to bypass the first
stage of the breaker fail protection (refer to the logic shown in Figure 2-164 in the 7SA6
manual “Initiation conditions for single-pole trip commands”).
• The timer stages T1 and T2 may now optionally be started in parallel or sequentially. With the
new setting parameter 3913 T2 StartCriteria it is set whether the time delay T2 is started
after the time T1 expires (T2 StartCriteria = With exp. Of T1) or in parallel with T1 (T2
StartCriteria = Parallel with T1), refer to Figure 2-167 in the 7SA6 manual , copy of which
is provided further below. In the firmware versions V4.6x the start of the timers was always in
parallel.
• The timer stage T1 is phase selective from V4.70 on (refer to Figure 2-167 in the 7SA6
manual ). Here follows an example: With 1-pole start in L1 the associated T1 time delay is
started for phase L1. If the trip is coupled 3-pole before the T1(L1) time has expired, then the
T1(L2), T1(L3) und T1(3pol) are additionally started. T1(L1) continues to run. If there is no
reset before the timer T1(L1) or T1(3pol) expire then the one with the shorter remaining time
will initiate the trip signal.
In the versions V4.6x the 3-pole coupling of the initiate signal results in a stop of the time
delay T1 1POL and a start of the timer T1(3pol). Therefore if a 3-pole coupling of an initial
single pole trip happens shortly before expiry of the timer T1 1POL, then the breaker fail
protection in V4.6x will only give the trip command after the newly triggered T1(3pol) has fully
expired.
From V4.70 the 3-pole coupling of the start signals does not affect the operation of the timer
T1 1POL. As soon as the timer T1 1POL of the phase that was first initiated 1-pole has
expired, the breaker fail trip command is generated, optionally single or three pole (depending
on address 3903 1p-RETRIP (T1) = YES or NO).
If the initiation is multiple pole right from the start, the timers T1 1POL and T1 3POL are
started in parallel. The timer T1 3POL therefore only allows an acceleration of the breaker fail
protection trip compared with the timer T1 1POL from V4.70 on. In the versions V4.6x the
timer T1 1POL was not started in the event of a multiple pole initiation and its setting was
therefore not restricted in any manner compared with the setting of T1 3POL. In practice
however, this constellation will not have any significance as the advantage of strictly
separated timer control, as it is implemented from V4.70 on, will be the key factor.
From V4.70 on the new binary input “1404 >BFactivate3I0” is provided for this functionality.
(ERR_40140 Input_284952)
4.19.17 Parameter 2913A Maximum Voltage Threshold U< (3phase) pre-setting increased
It is possible that during a fault in the VT secondary or following a switching operation in the VT
circuit the residual voltage is not zero. To increase the dependability of the Fuse Fail function it is
recommended to increase the threshold for the residual voltage. In Parameter Set 4.70 the pre-
setting of parameter 2913A was consequently increased from 5V to 15V. (CHDOC_25656)

The first 4 characters after the letters „BF“ indicate the year and month of manufacture. Devices having serial number
starting with BF0211xxxxxx, were therefor manufactured in November 2002.
In some few cases device failure may result because individual memory modules do not function correctly during operation resulting in the loss of the contents of
individual memory cells. The protection device memory is tested extensively while the device is booting up and subsequently during operation the memory is
permanently monitored in the background. Depending on the type of failure in the modules, the memory failure can results in different type of response by the
SIPROTEC devices:
The device does not start up and all LEDs apart from LED1 are flash.
The device reverts from normal operation to the monitor state.
In both cases the devices are not operational and must be returned for repair. Since the end of 10/2002 the fitted memory modules on the C-CPU modules are from
other manufacturers. The hardware version of the modules was changed accordingly (refer to chapter 7)
6 Firmware-Update
6.1 Microprocessor board (80 MHz)
The design of the processor has been changed by the manufacturer. This new design requires modifications
in the firmware. The modified firmware version (V4.36 or V4.60) is suitable for processors with old (40 MHz)
and with new (80 MHz) design (not for 3.3V CPU, see chapter 6.4). Earlier firmware versions are however
not suitable for processor boards containing processors with the new design. This means, that devices with
new processors may not be downgraded to older firmware versions (see chapter 7.1).

Firmware and software updates for SIPROTEC 4 devices can be obtained via the Siemens Intranet and
Internet. The appropriate addresses are shown in chapter 3 of this publication.
The updates for the device firmware and for communication modules can be found under the corresponding
device type. The corresponding DIGSI 4 device drivers are also attainable via the device-specific Intranet
and Internet pages.
A full DIGSI 4 version is not available for downloading, but can be ordered separately. Licensed DIGSI 4
customers will receive DIGSI 4 updates automatically.
For updates the components as shown in the table in chapter 2 are available. Please note that an update
will only be successful if the compatibility is in accordance with this table.
From firmware version V4.3x on separate device driver files are available for the three DIGSI Software
versions V4.12, V4.30 and V4.40. Please take particular note that the correct 7SA-device driver file
according to the DIGSI version installed on your PC is used. If the 7SA-device driver files were transferred

Please kindly note: Position 9 of the ordering code (MLFB) must be changed in the device. The MLFB modification must be placed as a separate order in the
repair department of our Berlin factory (refer to http://info.ptd.siemens.de/ptd_pa/produktion/EN/rep_umbauten.htm?PIdent=1003&SIdent=1016)

Ordering option with optical Ethernet module (System interface Port B, MLFB-supplement
for position 11: +L0S)
Æ Due to technical problems the commencement of delivery for the optical Ethernet modules is postponed
to 1.7.2005. The previously planned start of delivery was on 1.5.2005, the current price list
indicates 01/2005. Advance deliveries of devices with integrated modules can not be made at this point in
time. It is only possible to supply devices without module for a subsequent retrofit of the module. Loose
modules are also deliverable from this date. Further dates and ordering information will be provided via a
sales release letter.
- New protection data interface modules: Together with the commencement of delivery of the firmware
version V4.60 the hardware version of the devices was changed from 7SA6…/DD to 7SA6…/EE (refer
to chapter 6.1 and 7 in this PMS Information). Together with the start of delivery of this new hardware version
new Protection Data Interface modules FO17, FO18 und FO19 with new LC-Duplex connectors were
introduced. These new Protection Data Interface modules cover distances of 25 km, 60 km and 100 km via
mono mode fibers. They can be ordered for Port D with a MLFB-supplement for position 12: +M*G (25 km),
+M*H (60 km) and +M*J (100 km).
The three new Protection Data Interface modules do not function together with the "old" modules. The old
Protection Data Interface modules with the ordering option +M*C (10 km) and +M*D (35 km) are no
longer available.
If older devices with "old" modules have to communicate with newly ordered devices via the Protection Data
Interface, the Protection Data Interface in the older devices must be upgraded with new modules. For
ordering of the new Protection Data Interface modules for retrofitting, appropriate ordering numbers were
introduced.
The Protection Data Interface module FO5 (for connection via communication converters and multi mode
connections up to 1.5 km, ordering option +M*A) as well as FO6 (for multi mode connections up to
3.5 km, ordering option +M*B) are still available as before.
9 Other notes
9.1 Initial Start
The initial start procedure used with V3 relays is no longer available. To return the devices to their delivery
state with factory pre-settings, the SIPROTEC 4 devices can be re-initialised with DIGSI 4.
9.2 Packaging
The white SIPROTEC cardboard box is not suitable for shipping of individual SIPROTEC4 devices. Severe
mechanical shocks are not appropriately damped by deformation of the interior cardboard packaging. This
results in dislocation of or damage to the pcb-modules. Until further notice, the packaging will be marked as
follows: “Do not ship without extra packaging”.
For shipment, in particular of individual devices, additional packaging with appropriate damping material
must be used. All standard mechanical stress tests were passed by the devices. During service conditions
the devices are therefore not at risk.
