yourself.
Please read the below slides carefully so
you can make the best choice!

Visual Art, Drama, or Music
If visual art/drama, choose 2 semester classes.
If music, choose 1 class for the year.
Physical Education (PE)
Choose regular impact or low impact.
You should have 7 credits total.
Math SL or EL
The main difference between the two levels is that
EL is more conceptual. In EL, students go into
deeper analysis and inquiry. The class moves faster
so that students can see more advanced
applications. It is really meant for students who
enjoy math and want to explore the subject more.
Math SL or EL
The decision of choosing one of the two courses is
very important, please consider:
Your 8th grade teacher recommendation.
EL class moves faster, this implies more time to
practice, work in homework and study.
This course requires organization skills and
good study habits.

This course is designed to provide students with learning
and performance opportunities on band instruments
(brass, percussion, woodwind). The primary focus is on
the development, continuation, and expansion of skills
begun the previous years that are necessary for effective
instrumental music performance. Students build upon
previous skills and add more advanced techniques and
learn to recognize and apply terms for tempo as well as
style terminology. Additionally, students learn basic key
signature, time signatures, and terms for expression such
as f, P, and crescendo. Students will be engaged in
learning classical music, pop styles, jazz, folk music,
global music, and classic band literature. Students will
perform in 2 concerts a year.
Strings
This course is designed to provide students with learning
and performance opportunities on string instruments
(violin, viola, cello and bass). The primary focus is on the
development, continuation, and expansion of skills
begun the previous years that are necessary for effective
instrumental music performance. Students build upon
previous skills and add more advanced bowing
techniques and learn to recognize and apply terms for
tempo as well as style terminology. Additionally, students
learn basic key signature, time signatures, and terms for
expression such as f, P, and crescendo. Students will be
engaged in learning classical music, pop styles, jazz, folk
music, global music, and classic string literature. Students
will perform in 2 concerts a year.
Guitar
This course is designed to provide students with
learning and performance opportunities on acoustic
guitar. The primary focus is on the development,
continuation, and expansion of skills begun the
previous years that are necessary for effective
instrumental music performance. Students build
upon previous skills and add more advanced
techniques and learn to recognize and apply terms
for tempo as well as style terminology. Students will
perform in 2 concerts a year.
Performing Arts 1
This course focuses on explorations of human
performative expressions, from comedy to drama,
from ritual to experimental theatre events. The
course is a survey of all the performing styles and is
designed to give students exposure to all facets of
Performing Arts.
Audio/Video Production
This course will introduce students to the basic skills
of video and audio production and editing and give
them a unique opportunity to expand their artistic
expression by telling audiovisual stories. Through
hands-on practice and discussion, as well as the
viewing of classic film/video examples, students have
an opportunity to explore the possibilities of video
production. It is intended that students develop
original works such as short film, musical video clips,
or documentary.
Ceramics
This elective explores the traditional hand build
techniques to create different projects: Pinching,
coiling, slab building. All the projects will be research
based; analyzing the function and purpose of the
ceramic pieces within the culture and time period it
was created for. Students will learn different surface
decoration techniques such as: glazing, sgraffiato,
stencils, incising, underglazes, and others. All the
processes must be recorded in their sketchbook.
Special emphasis will be given the language of 3D
forms: Volume and tactile textures.
Digital Photography
This elective course will provide a solid introduction to
the medium of photography and its practice today. This
course is project based and consists of theoretical
content, idea development, workshops, and studio work.
The class concentrates on the practice of photography as
an art form, emphasizing the organization, function,
manipulation and communication of visual ideas.
Introduced to the photography foundations, how to look
at and critique photography, technical vocabulary and
digital manipulation of images will be explored. Students
will develop their visual skills and learn about the
essential features of a digital camera and how to control
them. Students will be given an overview of the technical
aspects of resolution, file formats and basic use of
Photoshop and other photo editing tools.
Painting
This elective explores the fundamentals of painting,
visual observation, and painting mediums. Students
will learn to paint through the language of color, the
use of stains, tone, and texture. By the end of this
course students will understand pictorial
representations through different 2D techniques
such as acrylic, ink, and watercolor. No prior
experience with painting is required or expected.
Drawing
This is an elective course that explores creativity
while exploring different techniques of intuitive

students will learn how to draw form and structure.
Cross contour line drawings will be introduced as a
mean to describe volume. All projects will be linked
to different artists and/or Art movements in Art
history. Special emphasis will be given to the
language of drawing: Line, line quality, line density,
value, visual textures, patterns, form and structure.
Fiber Arts
In this elective course, we will use both natural and
synthetic materials and fibers to create original artwork
through exploration of different techniques and
processes. This course is project based and consists of
theoretical content, idea development, workshops, and
studio work. We will evaluate textile and fiber designs
from different time periods, cultures and artists while
assessing the characteristics and merits of the work.
Studies in design will allow students to develop
knowledge and understanding of the functional and
aesthetic aspects of design applied to a variety of textile
materials, methods, techniques and end-uses.
Printmaking
This elective explores different printmaking
techniques: Collagraphs, Linocut, woodcut,
monotypes and intaglio on plexiglass. Students will
be introduced to the different materials, safety rules,
tools and equipment proper of the printmaking
studio. All the projects will be research based linking
the studio work with different artists in Art history,
students will be able to critique and write about a
printmaking piece using subject specific language
(edition, brayer, relief printing). Special emphasis will
be given to the language of printmaking: Shape,
visual textures, rhythm, movement and values.
3D Studio
This elective explores the traditional hand build
techniques to create different three dimensional
projects. All the projects will be research based;
analyzing the function and purpose of the pieces
within the culture and time period it was created for.
Students will apply their knowledge to build their
own 3D projects. Special emphasis will be given the
language of 3D forms: Volume and tactile textures.
Illustration
This elective develops storytelling skills through
imagery using different media and techniques.
Students will practice illustration techniques in digital
and analog forms. Students will develop their ability
to use images to capture concepts and ideas.
