    The Great Wall of China stretches over 13,000 miles across northern China and has a history as long as the massive structure itself. Originally constructed during the Chunqiu period by individual states, the wall was expanded under the Emperor to protect against invaders from the north. Millions of conscripted laborers and prisoners worked on reinforcing the existing walls into a larger fortification, many of whom died and were buried in mass graves along the wall.
