questionnaires in cancer
survivors: a systematic review
of measurement properties
Group 4: Nguyen Thi Dan (阮氏民)

Presentation Date: 2022/12/29
➢ Introduction
➢ Part A. Perform the literature search
Outlines ➢ Part B. Evaluate the measurement properties
➢ Part C. Select a patient-reported outcome
measure

2
Introduction
• Burden of cancer in the world:
estimated number of new cases
from 2020 to 2040, both sexes,
age (0-85+)
=> increasing, especially in Asia.
(WHO, 2020)

3
Introduction
• Cancer survivor: anyone who
has ever been diagnosed with
cancer no matter where they are
in the course of their disease.
(American Cancer Society)
• As early detection methods
and cancer treatments have
gotten better, the number of
people who have had cancer has
gone up greatly over the time.
Probability of premature death from cancer per year => Increasing survival rates.
All cancer in the world. (WHO, 2020)

4
Introduction
• Cancer has a profound impact on
lives of patients and their families.
• Cancer survivors have a wide
range of needs.
• Identify and manage the unmet
care needs of cancer survivors
effectively to improve their quality
of life.

(Tian et al, 2019)

Inclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria:
• Self-report needs questionnaire • Not self-reported questionnaires
• Adult (≥18 years of age) cancer survivors/patients • Not evaluate psychometric
• Originally aimed to develop questionnaire of properties of measurements or
construct, or evaluate the cross-cultural adaptation used the measurements to measure

Step 10. Discussion
➢The search strategy was effective to gather the intended articles
based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
➢There characteristics of the instruments regarding the purpose
are as follows:
● Assessing all types of needs for all types of cancer
● Assessing all types of needs for specific types of cancer
● Assessing specific type of needs for all types of cancer
● Assessing specific types of need for specific type of treatment.

9/3/20XX Presentation Title 31

Step 10. Discussion
➢The degree of evidence quality varied but most of the instruments shows
good measurement properties with the recommendation level of A and
B, and two instruments were rated C (SCNS-ST9-English and NEQ).
➢Gaps in the Finding
• No instrument was found that assess specific type of need for specific
type of cancer.
• Instrument assessing specific type of need for specific type of cancer is
needed to accommodate the uniqueness of the experience faced by
patients or survivor suffering from specific type of cancer.

9/3/20XX Presentation Title 32

➢ There were wide variety of instruments
measuring the needs of cancer patients or
survivors.
➢ Most of the instruments showed good
Conclusion validity and reliability.
➢ There is a gap in the literature about
instruments measuring specific type of
need for specific type of cancer.
