1 A rectangle has width bcm. The length is 5 more than the height. [6]

a) Write an expression for the length. b) Write and simplify an expression for the
perimeter.

Length=5 more than b=5+b cm Perimeter= 2(5+b) + 2 x b

=10+ 2b + 2b
=4b+10cm
c) Calculate the perimeter of the rectangle
when b = 10 cm

Substitute b=10 into 4b+10

4(10) +10= 40+10=50cm

2 Copy the following statements and fill in the missing numbers: [4]

a) b)
6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6= 6 3 x 3 x 3 x 3=3

5 4

c) d)

3 Which of the following numbers are prime numbers: [4]

18, 45, 79 and 90 ?

Explain by providing all of the factors of the numbers above.

The factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18; 18 is not a prime number.

The factors of 45 are 1, 3, 5, 9, 15 and 45; 45 is not a prime number.
The factors of 79 are 1 and 79; 79 is a prime number
The factors of 90 are 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 18, 30, 45 and 90; 90 is not a
prime number.
79 is the only prime number in the list.

4 If 320 x 47=15 040, what is the answer for 321 x 47? [3]

321 x 47=15087

5 The prime factors of a number are 2, 7 and 11. [3]

Which are the three smallest numbers with these prime factors?

First, need to get the LCM of 2,7,11

LCM of 2,7,11= 154
Since 154 is divisible by all three numbers, then the other two numbers are 154 x 2=308
And 154 x 2 x 2=616
Hence, the lowest three numbers are 154,308,616

6 Expand the brackets and simplify: [4]

a) 5(x+4) + 8(2x -3)

5x +20 + 16x -24

= 21x-4

b) 4(3y+2) - 3(5-7y)

=12y + 8 (15+ 35y)

=12y + 8-15+35y
=47y-7

7 A square has an area of 144 cm2 . How long are the sides of this square, to [3]
the nearest mm?

Area of square= √144=12cm

Long of sides in mm=12x10=120mm

8 Calculate the following: [4]

Find the HCF of:

(a) 20 and 30
factors of 20 = 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20;
factors of 30 = 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30)
Hence, HCF is 10

(b) 14 and 12
Factors of 14 = 1, 2, 7, 14
Factors of 12=1,2,3,4,6,12
Hence, HCF is 2

9 When x = 2 and y = 7 work out the value of [6]

a) xy³ b) 2x + 4²
2 x (7³)= 2 x 343=686 2 x 2 + 16=20

c) 9x-2y d) 3y+7x
9 x 2 - 2 x7= 18 -14=4 3x7 + 7 x 2=21+14=35

10 a) Square the following numbers: [4]

i) 14 ii) 17
196 289

iii) 21 iv) 31

441 961

b) Now, find the square-root of the following:

[4]
I) √ 6=2.45

Ii) √ 50=7.07

Iii) √ 90=9.49

Iv)√ 17=4.12

11 If f(x)=2x + 5, find: [3]

a) f(13) b) f(1.5)= 2(1.5) +5

=3+5=8
= 2(13) +5
=26+5=31

12 Anne earns x dollars per hour. Jamil earns $3 more per hour than
Anne. On Sunday he gets paid double.
Write an algebraic expression in terms of x for the amount Jamil earns
For a total of 18 hours on Sunday.

Anne=x
Jamil=3+x
For 18 hours= 18(3 + x)= 54+18x
Double pay on Sunday=2(54 +18x)=108 +36x

13 The length of a rectangle is 8x+4x cm, which is two times longer than its width. Calculate: [4]

A) The perimeter of the rectangle

Length= 8x + 4x
Width= length÷2= 8x + 4x÷2=4x + 2x
Perimeter= 2(8x + 4x) + 2(4x+2x)
=16x +8x + 8x + 4x= 36xcm

B) The area of the rectangle in terms of x

Area=( 8x+4x) x (4x+ 2x)

=32x²+ 16x²+16x²+ 8x²
=72x²cm

14 For the function 3x+ 5, the output is equal to 31. Hence, find the value of: [3]

3x=31-5=26
2
X=26÷3= 8
3

B) The new output when the input of x is 17.
