DAM 13701: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING WORKSHOP I

1.0 OBJECTIVES
- To give an exposure to us about milling process on steel.
- To prepare steel product based on milling process.
- To learn the usage of conventional milling machine, various type of
hand and cutting tools used for measurement, marking and metal
removed.

2.0 INTRODUCTION

Milling is widely used in operation because of its versatility in

producing various shape of product. Milling is a machining
operation in which a work part is fed past a rotating
cylindrical tool with multiple cutting edges. The geometric form
created by milling is a plane surface. Other work geometries can be
created either by means of the cutter path or the cutter shape.
Moreover, this process also purposely to remove material from a
work piece by advancing (or feeding) in a direction at an angle with
the axis of the tool; either x, y or z. It is one of the most commonly
used processes in industry and machine shops today for machining
parts to precise sizes and shapes.

Machine, workpiece, fixture and cutter being required in the milling

process. Workpiece is a piece of pre-shaped material which it is
attached to a platform inside of milling machine while cutter is
cutting tool that has sharp teeth which secured in the milling
machine and its rotate with high speed. The unwanted material can
be cut away when the workpiece place into the rotating cutter and
create the desired shape. Milling is typically used to produce parts
that not axially symmetric also have many features. For example,
holes, slots, pocket and three-dimensional surface contours.
Fabricated parts are completely through milling process which
usually including limited quantities of components perhaps
for prototypes either custom designed fasteners or brackets. Tooling
for other process is one of other application in the fabrication. Milling
process that commonly used as secondary process for the material
to add or refines features on parts. Milling process has high
tolerances, so it can add precision features to the part when
the basic shape already formed.
3.0 SAFETY
-Do study the owner's manual attentively. Before operating a milling machine, make
sure that you follow directions and are properly trained.
-Do wear appropriate safety glasses. Wear other personal protective equipment as
needed.
-Do make sure that operator is able to reach to stop/start button in case of any
unwanted situation. Ensure all machines have their emergency stop button(e-stop).
-Do keep the work surface free of scraps, clothes and tools as these can get caught
by the milling machine, causing problems and dangerous situations.
-When setting up work, move the table as far as possible from the cutter to avoid
injuring your hands.
-Do not wear gloves, rings, watches or loose clothing. Tie back and confine long hair.
-Do not attempt to mount, measure or adjust work until cutter is completely stop.
-Do wear proper attire such as long pants and workshop clothes.
-Do not play while conducting the milling machine to avoid any harm to your body also
everyone else in the workshop.
-Do make sure that the milling machine is already set precisely according to the work
that you want you to do to avoid any defect happen to the workpiece.

4.0 EQUIPMENT / TOOL

NAME AND FIGURE FUNCTION
5.0 PROCEDURE
- Detail and complete procedure/step of process.

6.0 FINISHED PART

- Product Drawing – Attach the product drawing into your report.
- Dimension comparison between the finished parts and product drawing.
- Appearance of the finished parts (defects).
- Picture/photo of finished parts.

7.0 DISCUSSION
- the product has a dull because of the placement on the workpiece is in
awkward place making the milling machine cut the piece inaccurately
- the machine must be set to anti-clockwise to make sure the drill bit did not
break during the process
- The table need a perfect movement during the cut to make sure there is no
defect by moving it not too slow and not too fast

8.0 CONCLUSION
The product has been produced by using milling process with exact detail that have
been given with a defect causes by mistake during the process
