Reading Task
Dear Parents,
Reading is an integral part of growth. Developing good reading habits is vital to your child. Summer
shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students
experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read gain
skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice
reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures
of childhood. So, summer reading should be fun. The following are a few tips to make reading
enjoyable for your children this summer:
Set a good example! Parents must be willing to model behavior for their children. Keep lots of
reading material around the house. Each person should read his or her book, including mom and dad.
Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it. This is the way to develop habits of the
mind and build capacity for thought and insight.
Let kids choose what they want to read, and don't turn your nose up at popular fiction. It will
only discourage the reading habit. If your child shows interest in buying new titles, kindly make sure
that the child reads them in your supervision to avoid exposure to any Islamically inappropriate
content.
Make books special. Turn reading into something special. Take your kids to the library, help them
get their own library card, read with them, take them to the bookstore and buy them books as gifts. It
will instill the importance of books in their minds.
Make a small library or reading corner for children at home. Compile their reading, coloring,
sketching books as well as their study material in an interesting manner in the corner of a room. Put a
carpet on the floor next to the books, along with a small chair and table. Encourage them to go, sit
and read in their library on daily basis, even if it’s only for fifteen minutes.
Read about it, talk about it and think about it! Applying the tips offered are some ways in which you
can help your child become a happy and confident reader.
Help your child select at least 6 books to read. Follow the strategies given to make your child’s
reading time beneficial. A sample Fiction and Non - Fiction book review has been given. More copies
of the same sample can be used to write as many reviews as your child can write about the books
he/she has read.
