Question No.

Consider the following data of mathematics students.

60 study French, 30 study French and German
55 study German, 25 study French and Russian
75 study Russian, 35 study German and Russian
12 students study all the three languages.
Let F, G, R denote the set of students studying French, German and
Russian respectively. Then find the number of students studying at least
one of the three languages i.e, n(FUGUR)

Solution:

n(FUGUR)= n(F) + n(G) + n(R) - n(F∩G) - n(F∩R) - n(G∩R) + n(F∩G∩R)

= 60+55+72-30-25-35+12
=112

Question No. 2

Use mathematical induction to prove the following for all natural

number n.
n
4+9+14+19+……………..+(5n-1)= 2 [3+ 5 n]

Solution

For n=1
1
4= 2 (3+5)
4=4
For n=k,show true n=k+1
Assume
k
4+9+14+19+……………..+(5k-1)= 2 [3+ 5 k ] ……(1)
Show
k +1
4+9+14+19+……………..+(5k-1)+(5(k+1)-1)= 2 ¿ )
Adding 5k+4 on both sides of equation 1, we get
k
4+9+14+19+……………..+(5k-1)+(5k+4)= 2 [3+ 5 k ]+5k+4
k
4+9+14+19+……………..+(5k+4)= 2 [3+ 5 k ]+5k+4
4+9+14+19+…………….+(5(k+1)-1)=1/2[5k 2+5k+8k+8]
=1/2[5k(k+1)+8(k+1)]
=1/2[(k+1)(5k+8)]
=(k+1)/2[5(k+1)+3]
=> Equation 1 is true for n=k+1
