Rule 1. If the reporting verb is in present tense or future tense- then, the tense of the reported verb will not change.

[Has/have said, says, say, will/ shall say]

Eg. She says to me, “I am a good dancer.”

She tells me that she is a good dancer.

Ashok says to Harshith, “You played well.”

Ashok tells Harshith that he played well.

Rule no 2. If the reporting verb is in past tense, the tense of the reported verb will change-

and Tina were in the same group. Tina replied that that was right. Ram suggested that then the group should meet to divide the

work on the project.

Tina : Did you hear what the professor said yesterday.

Ram :No, I missed that.

Tina : The professor allotted the groups for the projects and gave the topics to the group.

6) Rhea told Rhonda that she just couldn’t believe that they were going to Colorado. Rhonda said that it was a great place to go to in

summer. Rhea said that the trip was going to be fantastic. Rhonda said that they could go mountain biking there. To this Rhea

asked if it would be safe. Rhonda replied saying that there would be other interesting activities to do too.

8) Jane said that Alice was very angry when the toaster she bought didn’t work. Judy agreed with that. Jane said that Alice should

have examined that it thoroughly before she bought it. Judy said that Alice was always acts too quickly and gets into trouble. Jane

asked Judy if Alice’s problem had got solved. Judy replied in the affirmative, saying that the toaster was replaced.

Jane : Alice was so angry when the toaster that she bought didn’t work.

Judy : Yes, she was/ certainly she was

Jane :She should have examined it thoroughly before she bought it.

to it. Tim continued, saying that it had become a regular feature, to which Amy replied that fans would be fans.

Tim : Were you able to sleep well.

Amy :Thanks, I slept soundly as soon as I went to bed.

Tim : The NBA fans were everywhere making a lot of noise.

Amy :That is true. But I am used to it.

Tim :This has become a regular feature.
