Introduction:

A V6 engine is a six-cylinder piston engine where the cylinders share a

common crankshaft and are arranged in a V configuration. The first V6
engines were designed and produced independently by Marmon Motor
Car Company, Deutz Gasmotoren Fabrik and Delahaye. Engines built
after World War II include the Lancia V6 engine in 1950 for the Lancia
Aurelia, [1] and the Buick V6 engine in 1962 for the Buick Special. The
V6 layout has become the most common layout for six-cylinder
automotive engines.

Six-cylinder designs have less pulsation in the power delivery than four-
cylinder engines, due to the overlap in the power strokes of the six-
cylinder engine. In a four-cylinder engine, only one piston is on a power
stroke at any given time. Each piston comes to a complete stop and
reverses direction before the next one starts its power stroke, which
results in a gap between power strokes, especially at lower engine
speeds (RPM). In a six-cylinder engine with an even firing interval, the
next piston starts its power stroke 60° before the previous one finishes,
which results in smoother delivery of power to the flywheel.
Procedures

We build our V6 engine based on Chevrolet Silverado 2021 4.3L

EcoTec3 V6 Engine with 285 Horsepower and 305 Lb-Ft of Torque
The principal moving parts are the piston assembly, the connecting
rods, the crankshaft assembly (including flywheel and vibration
dampener),the camshaft, the valves. Burning of the air-fuel mixture
within the cylinder exerts a pressure on the piston, thus pushing the
cylinder down, the compression ratio is 11.0:1

Model dimensions and materials

Original materials of the engine:
Block: Cast Aluminum
Cylinder head: Cast Aluminum
Intake manifold: Composite
Exhaust manifold: Cast Nodular Iron
Main bearing caps: Powder Metal
Crankshaft: Forged Steel
Camshaft: Billet Steel
Connecting rods: Powder Metal

Used materials:
-The pistons as shown are made of Plastic Injectors with a bore
of 9.96mm (0.381 in) and Stroke of 9.2mm (0.326 in) on a
scale of 1:10 meaning the original size is 3.92-inch (99.6 mm)
bore x 3.62-inch (92 mm) stroke.
-The engine block made of Acrylic material which composed of
plastic and Prone.
-Two Camshaft made of wood sticks with aluminum foil to
simulate the rotational movement of the shafts.
- Spark ignitions and intake-exhaust valves are made of wood
-Crankshaft made of steel attached to the connecting rods with
an angel of 60° degree. The firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2
-Crankshaft Pulley which made of hardwood is three times
more stiff than the timing belt Pulley, as a result of that the
torque will be more produced.
-Timing belt made of rope, it’s job to make sure that the
movement of the camshaft or camshafts is synchronized with the
movement of the crankshaft.

Model assembling
1-cutting the acrylic.
2 -making the base.
3- fabrication the crankshaft.
4- cutting the Pistons one at a time.
5-cutting the cylinder heads.
6-making the injectors out of plastic with a bore of 50mm and
determine the length of it.
7-assembling the cylinder head on the cylinders.
8-attaching the camshafts.
9-assembling the pulley with crankshaft
10-Planning the place of exhaust and intake valves along with
sparks.
11-attach timing belt.
Results and conclusions
Some obstacles came along with the process of making this V6
engine, one of them while the cutting process of the wood is the
sawdust which nearly could’ve hurt my eyes and lungs.
The displacement and the length of the Pistons was so hard to
determine, after many times finally we could find the right size
to do the work. The V shape of the cylinders is vey hard to do
with a specific angle and attached it to the crankshaft correctly
to make sure the movement is smooth.
These challenges have affected the synchronization and
accuracy of the moving parts in the engine.
With that said we believe that this project have given us more
knowledge about IC engines and the accurate parts of it along
with the different types of materials that been used to make the
engine work with the most smoothness and efficiency.
We learned from this project that the hard work on something
you ambitious about would make you know a huge amount of
information that will help you in the future.
