Role and functions of International Sports Organizations

The responsibilities of the International Federations are to regularize


and standardize the Rules of their respective Sports, and also to cover
the Legislation, Organization and Development of the respective
Sports .
The International Sports Federations (IFs) establish the rules that
govern their sport and ensure that they are applied.
FIFA
The Fédération Internationale De Football Association

The Fédération internationale de football association


originated from France, is the international governing
body of association football, beach soccer, and futsal.
It was founded in May 21, 1904 to oversee international
competition among the national associations of Belgium,
Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and
Switzerland. its membership now comprises 211 national
associations. Its headquarter is in Zurich, Switzerland.
FIFA: Origin and Objective

Under the leadership of Robert Guerin, a French journalist,


FIFA’s first president, the seven founding members (countries)
gathered in Paris to shape the future of the sport.
FIFA's primary objective is "to improve the game of football
constantly and promote it globally in the light of its unifying,
educational, cultural and humanitarian values, particularly
through youth and development programmes". Gianni Infantino
is the current president of FIFA.
FIFA: Regulations and Official Languages
FIFA governs all facets of the game: regulating the rules of play,
overseeing the transfers of players internationally, organizing
international competitions such as the FIFA World Cup,
establishing standards for refereeing, coaching and sports
medicine, and encouraging soccer’s development around the
world.
The amended article 9 of the FIFA Statutes now recognises Arabic,
Portuguese and Russian as official languages of FIFA, in addition to
the existing official languages (English, French, German and
Spanish).
World Championships by FIFA
Among the official world championships staged by FIFA are the
World Cup, the Women’s World Cup, the Under-20 World Cup, the
Under-20 Women’s World Cup, the Under-17 World Cup, the Under-
17 Women’s World Cup, the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup and the
Futsal World Cup. Additionally, FIFA oversees the men’s and
women’s Olympic Football Tournament staged under the auspices of
the International Olympic Committee every four years. FIFA has also
staged the FIFA Confederations Cup, a competition between each of
its confederations' champions, and the FIFA Club World Cup, which
was held at the beginning of 2000 for the first time in Brazil.
