General Safety These general safety instructions include only some main parts of
the complete safety instructions. The general safety instructions are
Instructions intended for all work on the ACS 600 (referred to as ACx 600 in the
text below). Neglecting these instructions can cause physical injury
or death.

______________________________________________________
_

WARNING! All electrical installation and maintenance work on the

ACx 600 should be carried out by qualified electricians.

Any installation work must be done with the power off, and power is
not to be reconnected until the installation work is complete.
Dangerous residual voltages remain in capacitors when the
disconnecting device is opened. Wait 5 minutes after switching off
the supply before starting work.

For ACx 607 units -0100-3 to 0610-3, 0120-5 to 0760-5 and 0100-6
to 0760-6, the voltage between each input terminal (U1, V1, W1) and
earth must be measured with a multimeter (impedance at least
1 MΩ) to ensure that the frequency converter is discharged before
beginning work.

Always ensure that the measured voltage between terminals UDC+

and UDC- and frame is close to 0 V and that the supply has been
switched off before performing any work on the equipment or making
main circuit connections.

User’s Guide i
Safety Instructions

If the main circuit of the inverter unit is live, the motor terminals are
also live even if the motor is not running!

If there are inverters in parallel, open fuse switches of all parallel

connected inverters before installation or maintenance work in any of
them.

If the auxiliary voltage circuit of the ACx 600 is powered from an

external power supply, opening the disconnecting device does not
remove all voltages. Control voltages of 115/230 VAC may be
present on the digital inputs or outputs even though the inverter unit
is not powered. Before starting work, check which circuits remain live
after opening of the disconnecting device by referring to the circuit
diagrams for your particular delivery. Ensure by measuring that the
part of the cabinet you are working on is not live.

In ACx 600 frequency converters, control boards of the converter

unit may be at the main circuit potential. Dangerous voltages may be
present between the control cards and the frame of the converter
unit, when the main circuit voltage is on. It is critical that the use of
measuring instruments, such as an oscilloscope, and their
connection to the ACx 600 frequency converters is done with caution
and safety always a priority. The fault tracing instructions give
special mention of cases in which measurements may be performed
on the control boards, also indicating the measuring method to be
used.

Live parts on the inside of doors are protected against direct contact.
Special safety attention shall be paid when handling shrouds made
of sheet metal.
Do not make any voltage withstand tests on any part of the unit while
the unit is connected. Disconnect motor cables before making any
measurements on motors or motor cables.

Filter Safety The capacitors of the output sine filter are discharged via the
inverter. Wait 5 minutes after switching off the supply before starting
Instructions work on the filter. The voltage between each output terminal (U2, V2,
W2) and earth must be measured with a multimeter (impedance at
least 1 MΩ) to ensure that the frequency converter is discharged
before beginning work.

Chapter 2 - Overview of the Step-Up System

Overview This chapter introduces the main features of a Step-Up system.

The main idea of the Step-Up solution is that it enables the use of
medium voltage motor with low voltage frequency converter. That
enables lighter cabling because the current is smaller.

ACS607 / ACA 600 Filter

Figure 2 - 1 Step-Up Solution

A Step-Up application system consists of the frequency converter,

an LC filter, a transformer, cables and the motor.

The LC filter is a low pass filter suppressing the high frequency-

components of the frequency converter output. It consists of single
phase reactors and per phase AC capacitors connected in delta.

The filter is fitted in a separate cabinet.

The filter can be used with

• ACS600 SingleDrive
• ACS600 MultiDrive

The control mode is scalar instead of the Direct Torque Control

(DTC) mode.

User’s Guide 2-1

Chapter 2 - Overview of the Step-Up System

Standard Features IR compensation is used to achieve higher starting torque. The

voltage boost compensates resistive losses in cables, transformer
of Step-Up and motor. For step-up applications, special IR compensation is
Application used because, at 0 Hz, voltage cannot be fed to the transformer. Full
Software IR compensation should start around slip frequency.

Stall function (Param. 30.10). When torque is below a certain limit

and current is above a particular limit for a certain time, the motor is
assumed stalled and a stall fault or alarm is produced.

Motor phase loss function (param. 30.16). It is not possible to reliably

detect a missing phase around zero frequency. A phase loss fault is
given if at least one of the filtered absolute values of the phase
currents is below certain limit.

Underload protection (param. 30.13-30.15). If the current drops

below the selected curve (30.15) and the condition lasts longer than
the time set by parameter 30.14, a fault or warning is provided
(30.13).

Earth fault protection (param. 30.17) causes a fault or warning when

an earth fault is detected in the transformer primary or the
transformer cable. Note: Earth fault protection of frequency
converter does not protect the secondary side of transformer.

Overcurrent protection.

Short circuit protection.

Flying start without a pulse encoder works at frequencies higher than

5 Hz. At lower frequencies, flying start works from 0 Hz frequency
unless load inertia is very high. Flying start is activated by setting
parameter 20.01 START FUNCTION to ‘AUTO’.

The transformer and long cables may cause some impairments of

these functions. With long cables, increased impedance weakens
the reliability of, for example, overcurrent and short circuit
protections.

With parameter 30.03 EXTERNAL FAULT, protection functions (for

example earth fault protection on the secondary side of the
transformer) can be implemented using the digital inputs 0-6.

Cooling The filter is provided with forced cooling. The filter fan is rotating only
when the inverter is running. Fan overtemperature gives an alarm
(FAN OVERTEMP). Reactor overtemperature trips the drive (CHOKE
OTEMP).

Chapter 2 - Overview of the Step-Up System

Transformer Transformer selection is based on the demands of the application.

DC components together with demands for starting torque form the
need for voltage boost. When starting torque need is over 50% of
nominal torque or motor cable length is more than 300 metres a
special transformer must be used. An auto-transformer is not
allowed. More details on dimensioning of the transformer is in
Chapter 5.

Output Frequency It is recommended that output frequency is less than 1.1*FWP (field
weakening point) because of possible self-excitation phenomenon of
the LC filter. This is only when neither a braking chopper nor a
Thyristor Supply Unit (TSU) is in use. The reactor is nevertheless
designed to operate in the frequency range of 0.5-120 Hz.

Enclosure IP 21, IP 22, IP 42, IP 54 and IP 54R.

Operation without When operating without the transformer at nominal current, the
converter output voltage drops about 10%, which causes a rise in
the Transformer motor current. A filter can be used as a low voltage sine filter with a
few restrictions:

• Voltage drop and the inductance of the LC filter decrease the

maximum available torque at the motor. Therefore field
weakening operation and high overloads are not recommended.
• Filter will prevent circulating type or shaft grounding type of
bearing currents from occurring. However, a when two-winding
transformer is not used, phase to ground voltage overshoot level
is about three times the fundamental component of the motor
phase voltage (rms).

Chapter 3 - Start-Up

Programming Parameter changes when an output transformer is used:

the Drive 1. Set Parameter 26.03 IR COMPENSATION to the correct value
(see the calculation in subsection voltage BOOST in chapter 5).
Note that BOOST and IR compensation have different scalings!

If the value is not known you can find the right value by trying
values starting from 0.5% (of motor nominal voltage).
QV − QQ
2. Set Parameter 26.04 IR STEP-UP FREQ ≈ ⋅ IQ , where
QV

60 ⋅ I Q ⋅ 2
QV =

QQ = motor nominal
speed (rpm)

Note: Motor nominal data (Param. 99.05 and 99.06) is not taken
directly from the motor nameplate. Motor nominal voltage is set
equal to frequency converter voltage (for example 690 V). Motor
nominal current is set to equal

82
⋅ ,Q ,

where 8 1 and 8 2 are the primary and secondary voltages of the

transformer respectively.

This scaling is done because of the transformer.

The voltage drop over the filter and the cable is compensated by the
transformer.

Figure 5 - 1 Equivalent Circuit for Secondary Side of the Step-Up

System.

The impedance of the secondary side equals:

The system is dimensioned using the nominal current of the motor:

,2 = ,Q
Thus, the minimum voltage for the transformer secondary side
equals:

Primary Side It can be assumed that the primary voltage of the transformer is
about 10% lower than the supply voltage, of the frequency converter
because of the voltage drop in the LC filter.

The primary side voltage U1 equals 0.9 (0.85) * nominal voltage of

frequency converter for 690 V (500 V) converter.

Current for secondary side:

, 2 = , Q = 106 $
Thus, the minimum voltage for the transformer secondary side
equals:

82 = 3 ⋅ 106 $ ⋅ 19.38 Ω ≈ 3558 9

The secondary voltage of the transformer is thus chosen to be UN2 =

3560 V

Primary Side Transformer primary voltage UN1 = 0.9 ⋅ 690 V ≈ 620 V

Chapter 5 - Dimensioning

Voltage Boost Voltage boost is used to achieve a better starting torque. The
demand for a high starting torque affects the transformer design
because voltage boost at low frequencies increases transformer flux.
Voltage boost compensates resistive losses in the cables,
transformer and motor. For step-up applications, special IR
compensation is used because voltage cannot be fed to the
transformer at 0 Hz. Full IR compensation starts around slip
frequency.

Parameters are 26.03 IR COMPENSATION and 26.04 IR STEP-UP
FREQ.

Without IR compensation the motor can only give a very low starting
torque at its nominal current. A typical relation between the starting
torque and current is shown in figure 5 - 3.

Figure 5 - 3 Relation between Torque and Current

The current required depends on starting torque demand. The

magnetizing current of the motor equals:

, PDJQ = 1 − cos 2 (ϕ Q ) ⋅ , Q

The torque producing current equals:

7UHI
, WRUT = ⋅ cos(ϕ Q ) ⋅ , Q
100

Resistive losses consist of transformer, cable and motor stator

resistance. Thus the voltage drop at the required current equals:

8 GURS, SKDVH = , 2 ⋅ (5N + 5F + 5V ), where

,2 = 2
, PDJQ + , WRUT
2

The voltage drop of frequency converter output equals:

8 GURS, SULPDU\ = 8 1 ⋅ 3 ⋅ 8 GURS, SKDVH

Chapter 5 - Dimensioning

At frequency f, the normally required voltage equals:

88 / ) =
I ⋅8
I Q LQSXW
Thus, the needed boost equals:

8 GURS, SULPDU\ + 8 8 / )
%2267 = ⋅ 100 %
88 / )
The transformer is dimensioned according to specified voltage boost.

Example In this example we calculate the voltage BOOST for 50% torque.
The motor data etc. are as above.

( )
2
 502

, 86(' = 1 − 0.82 ⋅ 106 + 
2
⋅ 0.82 ⋅ 106  $ = 74.63 $
 100 

The voltage drop on the secondary side (motor stator resistance is

assumed to be 0.3Ω and transformer resistance 0.19Ω) equals:

8 GURS SKDVH = 74.63 ⋅ (0.19 + 1.35 + 0.3) 9 = 137.3 9

,

For the primary side, the voltage drop equals:

8 GURS SULPDU\ =
,
620
⋅ 3 ⋅ 137.3 9 = 41.4 9
3560

For 2 Hz, the normal U/F curve gives the following result:

88 /) =
2
⋅ 690 9 = 27.6 9
50

Thus, the required voltage boost for 50% torque equals:

%2267 = 41.4 + 27.6 ⋅ 100 % = 250 %

27.6

Transformer should according to calculations withstand 250%

voltage at 2 Hz frequency. Calculated boost value is given to
transformer manufacturer.

5-6 User’s Guide

Chapter 5 - Dimensioning

Voltage boost is in practise done by IR compensation. In this

example user given IR COMPENSATION (parameter) should be
approximately 6% ( 0.06 ⋅ 690 9 = 41.4 9 ). IR compensation should
start at approximately slip frequency in order to avoid transformer
saturation. This can be achieved with the parameter IR STEP-UP
FREQ.

It is important to notice that:

⇒ Voltage boost is a specification for the transformer

manufacturer. It defines how much transformer can
withstand overvoltage. Boost is scaled according to
U/F curve.

⇒ Boost is implemented by using IR compensation. IR

compensation is scaled according to converter output
voltage (690 V, 500 V, 400 V).
