FILM ANALYSIS: GOLDEN COMPASS

SASINDI AND ELISHA

THEMES
THE THEME WE CHOSE IS TRUTH AND DECEPTION

DRAMATIC CONFLICT
THE CONFLICT IS THAT THE MAGISTERIUM PREVENTING/SURPRESSING THE TRUTH FROM
BEING REVEALED OR FOUND OUT.

CHARACTER; LYRA
Role: She is the main character in the movie who portrays, loyalty and maturity. Also, to save
her world.

Dramatic irony: when in the beginning the children started playing as gobblers for fun, they
ended up being kidnapped by the real gobblers in the end. (Mostly showing Billy and Rojer
being the victims). It’s like the whole intention of the story was shown through the children.

Characteristics:
Loyalty: lyra had to be a rebel just to find the truth (this is where the magisterium poisoned
Asriel’s wine and lyra had to keep come out from her hiding position just to prevent Asriel from
drinking it).

Deceptions: where the whole thing about her being an orphan was a lie
Then when she was taken by Mrs. Coutler saying that she wants to take her somewhere, in the
end turns out that she was actually holding her hostage
The Magisterium poisoned Lord Aesrial’s wine to prevent him from going ahead to figure out
the truth about the ‘dust’.
Also, where the battle is between the bears, Lyra had to use deception in order to achieve
victory but still stayed loyal to Iorek, so that he could get his position back.

Situation: There were tension in particular scenes and calmness in some (for example,
whenever a truth is found out, the environment turns gloomy and brings a tension between the
characters, for example, lyra and lord aesriel, then lyra and Mrs. Coutler).
