2016ME20750

1. Choose structure

2. Add element – Shell – 3D 4node181

3. Set values
4. Material Property Graph
5. Set thickness to 3 in shell section

6. Make rectangle by setting (0,0) and width 100 height 15

7. Make 3 circles of radius 12.5 and centre (0,7.5),(50,7.5),(100,7.5)
8. Add all circles to rectangle

9. Make 3 hexagons with centre at (0,7),(50,9),(100,7)

10. Subtract 3 rectangles and mesh them

11. Mesh areas

12. Set displacement 0 of first hexagon
13. Set pressure 0.1 on line
14. Solve

15. Solution of 3 mm thickness

16. Von misses of 3 mm thickness

17. Solution of 5 mm thickness

18. Von misses of 5 mm thickness

19. Plane stress element added wit behaviour as plane stress with thickness
20. Add thickness 3 mm to plane stress element

21. Chage meshing attributes to 2 PLANE182

22. Mesh the part

23. Mesh created and set displpacement of left hexagon as 0 on all sides.
24. Apply pressure as 0.1

25. Solve it.

26. Von misses analysis of 3 mm thick plane stress element

Maximum von misses stress is 1.71088 MPa for 3 mm thick shell element
Maximum von misses stress is 1.02543 MPa for 5 mm thick shell element
Maximum von misses stress is 5.13573 MPa for 3 mm thick plane stress element

Conclusion
The value of von mises stress in shell elements 3 mm thickness 1.71088 MPa less
than plane stress solid triangular elements with 3 mm thickness and stress = 5.13573
MPa.
Maximum stress decreases from 1.71088 MPa in 3mm thickness to 1.02543 MPa in 5
mm thickness. This may mainly be because the pressure distribution (per unit area)
decreases as area increases but the force per unit length does not change.
