BOLT CAGE DESIGN CALCULATIONS

1- PARAMETRS:

fc' = 42.50 MPa ( Compressive Strength of the Concrete Column).

fy = 420.00 MPa ( yield Strength of Deformed Bars)
Ec = 32,959.00 MPa ( Modulus of Elasticity of Concrete).
Es = 195,000.00 MPa ( Modulus of Elasticity of Steel).
n = 5.92 ( Modular Ratio).

2- MATERIAL PROPERTIES DUE TO THE EFFECT OF BLASTING LOADS:

Refer to the SAUDI ARAMCO standard SAES-M-009 April30. 2002 for the Design Criteria for Blast Resistant Builsings.

2a) Dynamic Yield Stress Fyd for Deformed Steel Bars:

Fdy = Fy * SIF * DIF

Where, Fy = Minimum Statis Yield Stress = 420.00 MPa

SIF = Strength Increase Factor = 1.10 (for Concrete Reinforcing Steel ).
DIF = Dynamic Increase Factor = 1.10 (DIF for yild Strength of Reinforcing Bars Subject
to Compression).
DIF = Dynamic Increase Factor = 1.17 (DIF for yild Strength of Reinforcing Bars Subject
to Bending).
DIF = Dynamic Increase Factor = 1.10 (DIF for yild Strength of Reinforcing Bars Subject
to Shear).

Fdy Compression = Fy * SIF * DIF Compression = 508.20 MPa

Fdy Bending = Fy * SIF * DIF Compression = 540.54 MPa
Fdy Shear = Fy * SIF * DIF Compression = 508.20 MPa

2b)Dynamic Yield Stress Fdu for Concrete :

Fdu = Fu * SIF * DIF

Where, Fcu = Compressive Strength of the Concrete = 42.50 MPa

SIF = Strength Increase Factor = 1.00 (for Concrete Reinforcing Steel ).
DIF = Dynamic Increase Factor = 1.12 (DIF for yild Strength of Reinforcing Bars Subject
to Compression).
DIF = Dynamic Increase Factor = 1.19 (DIF for yild Strength of Reinforcing Bars Subject
to Bending).
DIF = Dynamic Increase Factor = 1.10 (DIF for yild Strength of Reinforcing Bars Subject
to Shear).

Fdy Compression = Fy * SIF * DIF Compression = 47.60 MPa

Fdy Bending = Fy * SIF * DIF Compression = 50.58 MPa
Fdy Shear = Fy * SIF * DIF Compression = 46.75 MPa

3a) Service Loads

Vertical Loads Shear Loads Moment

KN KN KN.m

Blast Loads 508.00 737.93 2,800.00

Dead Loads -424.50 222.48 420.00

Live Loads -47.50 27.00 50.00

3b) Load Compinations

U(t) = D + aL + B(t)

Pu = 508.00 + -424.50 + -47.50 = 36.00 KN

Mu = 2,800.00 + 420.00 + 50.00 = 3,270.00 KN.m

4- COLUMN PROPERTIES :

- Column Width b = 550.00 mm , - y = 475.00 mm

- Column Heigth h = 950.00 mm , - I = 39.3E+9 mm4
- Column Area A = 522,500.00 mm2 , - S = 82.7E+6 mm3

To Calculate the Required Reinforcement Steel :

0.85 fc' 2 Mu
r = 1 - 1 -
fy 0.85 f fc' b d2

r = 0.0168791267123217

As = r b d = 8,355.17 mm2

Ues f 40 Deformed Steel Bars

The Area of f 40 = 1,256.64 mm2
8,355.17
The Number of Deformed Steel Bars = = 6.65 Then use, 8
1,256.64

39.60
5- BOLT CAGE CALCULATIONS :

36,000.00 3.3E+9 39.46
s = + = 39.60 MPa
s = + = 39.60 MPa
522,500.00 82.7E+6

`

36,000.00 3.3E+9
s = - = -39.46 MPa
522,500.00 82.7E+6

T = 39.60 * 475.83 * 0.50 * 550.00

- To Determine Number of Bolts Required :

Use f 40 mm ASTM A 615 Stud Bolts

Area of f 40 Stud Bolts = 1,256.64 mm2

Allowable Tensile Force on the Bolts = 0.9 * A * f dy = 0.90 * 1,256.64 * 540.54 = 611.34 KN

5,181.17
Number of Bolts Required = = 8.48 Then use, 10
