Dear cycling fan,

Unfortunately, the Flemish spring classics are almost over. With De Brabantse Pijl, we traditionally
close our season in the Druivenstreek and the Zennevallei. It has been a season in which we have
enjoyed top-class racing and to which we are linking a smashing closer. Experience the last race
together with us, from Leuven, Lennik and Overijse, or from somewhere in between.

This fan guide is your practical guide to enjoying cycling. We guide you from A to Z through
everything De Brabantse Pijl has to offer. From the course info to the participants and
broadcasters: we have collected together the most important info for you here.

Feel like exploring the region after the race? Then browse through our tourist guide with the most

Since 2008, the starting shot for De Brabantse Pijl has been given in Leuven. From the
Ladeuzeplein, the Men Elite depart on Wednesday 12 April for their last tough challenge of the
Flemish classic spring. Spot your favourites and enjoy a wonderful cycling atmosphere in the

HOW TO GET THERE?

On foot
Do you live nearby? If so, just head to the Ladeuzeplein on foot. The station is within walking
distance and the bicycle parking facility is also nearby.

By bike
Leuven is the ultimate cycling city, you see that every day on the city streets. So cycling to the
start is a great idea!

By train
Leuven station is located within walking distance of the Ladeuzeplein. In other words, travelling
to Leuven by train couldn’t be easier! Moreover, there are extensive connections to Leuven and
you won’t have any parking problems in the centre. So be sure to check the timetable for trains to
Leuven on www.belgiantrain.be and enjoy a carefree journey to Leuven!

By car
Are you coming by car? Leuven has many public car parks where you can park your car in
complete safety. More information: www.leuven.be/parkeren.

EXPLORE LEUVEN

Do you love culture, gastronomy and sport? Then, for you, Leuven is the place to be! Add that
touch of youthful enthusiasm from the many students, and you cannot help but enjoy yourself.
Browse the culture in the huge library on the Ladeuzeplein, in the Gothic-style town hall or
visit the oldest university in Belgium. In the Heverleebos you come across beautiful pieces of
architecture in complete peace and quiet. Afterwards, relax in one of the cosy bars or terraces
on the Oude Markt. Still got some energy left? Loosen up those legs at one of the many sporting
events and activities in the city. Leuven was not the European City of Sport in 2021 for nothing, as
well as being the place to be where the road racing World Champions were crowned in that year.

LEUVEN AND DE BRABANTSE PIJL

This year, for the 16th time, Leuven is the starting point for De Brabantse Pijl. It is a beautiful
marriage in which a festive start in a young city environment is paired with a race through the lush
green of the surrounding Flemish Brabant.

HOW TO GET THERE?

On foot
The team presentation and start of the Women Elite both take place on the Market Square in
Lennik. From the centre of Lennik the start zone is easily accessible on foot.

By bike
The market in Lennik is easily accessible by bike from the suburbs via bike-friendly roads.

By bus
During the race, all normal transport tickets, such as season tickets or a Lijnkaart, are valid. All
information and timetables can be found on www.delijn.be. The De Lijn stops are within walking
distance of the Markt.

By car
You can park your car on the parking of the Schepenbank and sports centre.

EXPLORE LENNIK

Discover the rolling Pajottenland on foot or by bike from the starting point of Lennik. Natural
beauty and history alternate in a mysterious landscape. Visit one of the cultural attractions, such
as the Gaasbeek castle, the Sint-Martinus church or the Prins statue, and immerse yourself in
the culture of then. Want to relax? Then avail yourself of one of the many catering facilities in the
centre of Lennik.

OVERIJSE

In Overijse you have the chance to spot the Women Elite and Men no less than eight times! The
local rounds over Hagaard, Hertstraat, Moskesstraat and Holstheide make for a tough race with
many vertical metres. The women and men finish with the climb of the S-bend in Overijse on the
way to the finish on the Brusselsesteenweg. On Wednesday 12 April, we will know the successors
to Demi Vollering and Magnus Sheffield.

HOW TO GET THERE?

On foot
The arrival of the men and women will take place on the Brusselsesteenweg in Overijse, just after
the S-curve. Do you live in the neighbourhood of the centre or the Brusselsesteenweg in Overijse?
Then it’s easy to get to the public area around the finish on foot.

By bike
The finish zone is located at a 10 minute bike ride from the centre of Overijse.

By bus
During the race, all normal travel passes, such as season tickets or Lijnkaart, are valid. All
information and timetables can be found at www.delijn.be. The De Lijn stops are within walking
distance of the finish area.

By car
The arrival zone of De Brabantse Pijl is just outside the centre of Overijse. Keep in mind that the
car parks of Stationsplein, De Vuurmolen and Begijnhof will be reserved for the organisation.
Parking Mariëndal will be available.

EXPLORE OVERIJSE

Come to the heart of the province of Flemish Brabant and discover all about grape growing in
the Dru!f visitor centre. The natural beauty of the Zoniënwoud invites you to take a peaceful
walk or bike ride. On the way, you will pass characteristic architectural gems such as the many
glasshouses, the Vuurmolen or the Tombeekheyde. Cycling plays a central role in the rolling
landscape and on the challenging hills around Overijse. The Druivenkoers, the Druivencross - the
mother of cyclo-crosses - and De Brabantse Pijl are annual events that every cycling fan looks
forward to. Experienced cyclists can explore De Brabantse Pijl cycling route for themselves.

Discover Flemish Brabant for cycling

heroes
We know how to race. From heroic climbs and breath-taking descents. From cobbles that make
you shiver and straight concrete roads to go full gas. You can ask Eddy Merckx where he got
the taste of it. Or ask Sven Nys, who’s sharing the cyclo-cross course on his Balenberg with
everyone. But this is also the home of the younger generation of cyclists. Remco Evenepoel
prefers racing over the roads of the Pajottenland. Jasper Stuyven has basically tested all of
these roads during his long trainings rides from his home city Leuven. It’s no coincidence that
the biggest riders in Flemish-Brabant gathered to decide on the very best rider during the 100th
birthday of the UCI Road World Championships.

Not only can you speed on these beautiful cycling roads, the off-road adventure is also calling
when you leave the flat roads. The nicest gravel routes show you places your car will never get
you. Take your mountain bike or cyclo-cross bike and challenge yourself on the exhausting single
tracks through the woods and fields. That much variation and so many disciplines can only be
found in our province. It’s up to you to discover it all. So stay a little longer, because one day sure
is not enough!

De Brabantse Pijl
The rain made it a tough closing race to the Flemish spring last year. Demi Vollering rode away
from her competitors 10 km from the finish, on the final climb of the Moskesstraat. She rode solo
to the finish and ended ahead of Niewiadoma and Lippert. It was a similar scenario in the men’s
race. After a series of attack attempts, it was Sheffield who bolted away 3.5km from the finish
and, like Vollering, soloed to victory. Cosnefroy and Barguil took second and third places.

Race information
More than enough reason to head to Overijse after the start in Leuven and Lennik and experience
the finale from the front row. The local loops give you more than one chance to cheer on your
favourite. Below you can find all the information necessary to make it a fun day of cycling.

Will you opt for the passage in Overijse or for one of the many vicious climbs to be found in the
Druivenstreek? Spectacle guaranteed! De Brabantse Pijl is known to be a real battle of attrition.
In the journey to Overijse, the riders have to confront the Bruine Put and the Sollenberg near
Beersel. Upon reaching Overijse, 4 laps of the local circuit await, each of 22 km with 4 climbs:
Hagaard, Hertstraat, Moskesstraat, Holstheide and then the S-bend.

After a race of 141 kilometres, we will know the winner and the successor to Demi Vollering at
around 14:15. The Men Elite have to cover 205 kilometres. They finish on the Brusselsesteenweg
at around 17:23. Who will succeed 19-year-old Magnus Sheffield?

The climbs on the local loop in Overijse

No less than four times, both the men and women have to confront some of the toughest climbs
of the Druivenstreek. No laughing matter, especially if you have already climbed them yourself.
Want to experience the race even better? You can do so by ticking off this list from top to bottom
each lap:

HAGAARD

> Type: asphalt

> Length: 300 metres
> Average gradient: 10.2 %
> Maximum gradient: 13.5 %

The Hagaard is only 300 metres long, but treacherously steep. As the opener of the climbing
quintet, it’s certainly tough on the legs. The riders will not have much time on this narrow asphalt
road to enjoy the beautiful forest surroundings. Looking for a base for your cycling club? Then
youth house De Hagaard is your place to be.

HERTSTRAAT

Turn off the Terhulpensesteenweg and then straight up: that

> Type: cobbles
> Lengte: 700 metres
> Average gradient: 4,9 %
> Max gradient: 9,4 %
is how the Hertstraat is presented to you. Not the highest
percentages, but a climb with seemingly no end in sight. First,
you bump along the cobblestones for 700 metres and then, for
dessert, there is still a long tail end. Where do you start your
attack?

MOSKESSTRAAT

The Moskesstraat is a typical Flemish climb. In the run-up

to the 2021 UCI Road World Championships, Overijse set
aside time and resources to further underline the authentic
character of this sunken road. The many asphalt patches
were removed from the surface, all the original cobblestones
were cleaned and placed back on a foundation of permeable
stone chippings, also known as loose joints. This durable
reconstruction was not completed with kerbs, but large
cobblestones on the side of the road. The entire process
respected the characteristic Flemish way, comparable with the

HOLSTHEIDE
The climb where Remco Evenepoel attacked three times
during the last edition of De Brabantse Pijl. A climb for men
and women with great stamina, for those who can ride just
with that bigger gear. The wide road between meadow and
forest ensures that you do not quickly disappear from sight.
Who dares to escape this year on this leg killer? The last
chance for those who do not have the final punch to complete
matters on the S-bend in Overijse.
S-BEND OVERIJSE
Just like the Moskesstraat, the S-bend in the centre of
Overijse was added to the course of the road races at
the 2021 UCI Road World Championships. As with the
Moskesstraat, Puncheur provided several paintings on the
wall of the S-Bend in Overijse. The ‘wall of fame’ for the 100th
anniversary of the World Championships featured a selection
of Belgian former world champions and Flandriens, such as
Eddy Merckx, Yvonne Reynders and Briek Schotte, as well
as Rik Van Steenbergen, Rik Van Looy, Georges Ronsse and
Freddy Maertens.
