2.2 Why is a sketch essential to determine areas between curves? (1)
area –an application of integration.
Answer: Need sketch to see if there will be negative valued integrals, because the area is below the
x-axis. Split integral if necessary.

2.3 What do you understand under the term “absolute value” ? (No marks)
The absolute value of a real number is the distance between the number and the origin on the
number line. Distance is always positive, so we can think of absolute value of as the number value
and disregard the sign.

QUESTION 3
Suppose that liquid flows into a tank at a variable rate of q(t) litre per second. It can be shown that
the area under the graph of q against t represents the volume of liquid in the tank.
t t2
Consider a chemical storage tank with liquid entering at a rate of q (t )  6   .
10 100
If at time t = 0 the tank is empty, calculate the volume of liquid in the tank at time t = 20 seconds.

Marker notes: No unit, deduct one mark. If the student shows no workings and go directly from
the definite integral to the numerical answer they must reference the calculator used to find the
answer. No reference maximum 3 marks.
