ABSTRACT
This article examines the scientific documentation of Alberto Santos=Dumont's first
historic flight in history, as documented in the November 8, 1906 issue of Nature
magazine. Before this documented flight by Santos=Dumont, there is no other
scientific article, from any other source, that proves that someone had flown before
him, not even the Wright brothers, causing the brothers' flight to be treated as a
mere verbal report, no different from the flights of Shivkar Talpade in 1895, 8 years
before the Wright brothers and Clément Ader's Eole (Avion I), on 9 October 1890,
three years before. Santos=Dumont's flight on October 23, 1906, marked a
significant milestone in aviation history, as he piloted a flying machine on the
"heavier than air" principle. The Nature article provides a comprehensive account
of Santos=Dumont's aircraft, the 14-bis, its design, and the scientific principles
behind its operation. By surpassing the efforts of previous aviation enthusiasts,
Santos=Dumont's flight filled the prerequisites for scientific recognition and
sparked renewed interest in the field. This article highlights the importance of
Santos=Dumont's achievement as the first scientifically documented flight,
showcasing his significant contributions to the advancement of aeronautics.
