BINISLAKAN (Lingayen)
Dance researcher : Francisca Reyes – Aquino
• It means “With the use of Sticks”
• Danced to commemorate the stay of LIMAHONG, a Chinese
pirate who built his empire in Almazin, a small place
between barrio Pulong and Maniboc.
• Originate in Lingayen, Pangasinan,
Lingayen – derived from the Chinese word “LI-KING-TUNG”
which means “having to look back and upward.
• Country of influence: China
• Ethno-linguistic group: Pangasinense
• Classification: Social dance
• Costume:
COSTUME

a. Female – Siesgo and Kimono


with loose and long sleeves and soft
panuelos.
b. Male – Camisa de Chino and red
pants.
SUA-KU-SUA
Dance researcher : Ramon A. Obusan
• It means “My Pomelo Tree”
• Pomelo fruits served as an important source
of income of the people of SULU.
• Originate in Jolo, Sulu
• Ethno-linguistic group: Tausug – known as
fierce warriors and remarkable seafarers and
farmers.
• Country of influence: China, Malaysia, and
Indonesia
• Classification: Courtship dance
COSTUME

Female
• top (barawasi),
• pants (sawal or kantiu),
• shoulder band (Siyag)
• head piece (3 choices)
• gold or brass filigree called tusuk
• paper bills pasted on slender sticks
• pasteboard cutouts in the front tip similar
to Chinese crowns covered with gold foils.
COSTUME

MALE
• Top (Bajo)
• Pants (Sawal or Kantiu) darker colors and
bolder design.
• Accessories:

❖ Sarok hat
❖ Pis Siyabit (rectangular handkerchief)
❖ Kris (Muslim sword)
❖ Barong (Leaf knife).
PANGALAY

• It means “Finger nail”
• Also known as Daling-daling or Mengalai in Sabah.
• Originate in Sulu.
• Most distinctively Asian of all the Southern Philippine Dances
because dancers must have dexterity and flexibility of shoulders,
elbows, and wrists similar to KONTAW SILAT – a martial art
common in Malay Archipelago.
• Performed during weddings or other festive events.
PANGALAY

Country of influences: Thailand, Burma, Cambodia,


Malaysia and Indonesia
Classification: Wedding/Festival dance
• Pangasik – male version of the Pangalay (more
martial movements)
• Pangiluk – features both male and female
dancers.
COSTUME

MALE
Costume:
Dancers wears a typical Joloana costume
Acccesories: Janggay – extended metal
finger nails in each fingers. The rich
people have janggay made of gold or
silver
Suggested footwear: barefoot
SAKUTING

• Refers to rhythmic sticks producing the accompaniment for the
dance.
• A dance of the ethnic people living in the western side of the
Cordillera.
• Young boys and girls holding a sticks and dancing in front of the
houses and ask for gifts.
• Place of origin: Abra and Ilocos Norte
• Country of influence: China
• Classification: Social Dance
COSTUME

elbow length, ankle length skirt
of bright colored plaids shirred
at the waist.
b. Male – Camisa de Chino, red
trousers and native hat.
