Read the article ‘Millions of Zambas’ by Amé Canela
I met Zamba in 2014 when I studied at Visual Art Teacher Training College and
another teacher recommended this cartoon character to me. I was surprised
when I saw this character as it has the same color of my skin. It is cartoon of
State TV series for kids. It was the first time I had the chance to see that
someone resembles me, my friends and my neighbors' children.
Zamba like many other kids in Argentina has brown skin and its native
ascendancy was erased or omitted in many books, it seems his existence was a
distant theme or as if it were rooted in the migration theme.
In Argentina, people have learnt to deny their ancestors painting them with the
European migration as part of its nation-formation. Zamba brings a crack in
symbolic terms, he wears sporty outfit, he doesn’t bother anybody, he’s not
offensive and he belongs to our current
realities since brown kids turros ‘pibitos
marrones turros’ are looking for
opportunities and chances in a better
future. They are the other side of our
society. This meme is iconic, but the gun
was added to the original meme due to the
fact that most society thinks that a browny
teenage kid is a synonym of crime.
We dream for the possibility to not have only one Zamba, and all Zambas have
the possibility to live and exist without the stigma of being judged by the color
of his skin and clothes.
After reading the article, draw and color the following Zambas and write the
name of the urban group it might belong to.
