Section 4 - Configuration

4. Configuration
Complementary Input Differential Expansion, or CIDE, uses both channels of the channel
pair to make a single composite differential expansion measurement.

4.1 CIDE Channel Configuration Considerations

• The software automatically selects "No Keyphasor" option. This configuration
requires no Keyphasor* signals.
• The CIDE measurement requires both channels of the channel pair to make the
single composite differential expansion measurement. This configuration mounts the
two probes in a complementary manner to extend the measurement range to twice
the range of a single probe.

Figure 4-3: Typical CIDE Installations

• Configure monitors in channel pairs (for example, configure Channels 1 and 2 as

CIDE and Channels 3 and 41 the same as (1,2) or as any of the other channel types).
• When you modify the composite full-scale range, readjust the setpoints associated
with this measured value.
• Use the same transducer type on each channel of the channel pair.
• The Cross Over Voltage (COV) is the transducer gap voltage that the monitor uses to
"switch" from one transducer to the other. Gap the transducers to the same COV
within mechanical and electrical runout limits. The transducers' COVs define the
midpoint of the composite full-scale range. For example, when both probes are at
the COV the composite reading will be mid-scale.
• The COV depends on the composite full-scale range and the transducer type.
• The cross over voltage is also the initial gap voltage for the Direct proportional
value and adjusting the cross over voltage is similar to setting the zero position on
other DE monitors.
• The upscale direction is referenced to the channel 1 probe of channel pair (1,2) and
the channel 3 probe of channel pair (3,4)1.

• The upscale direction for the Direct values is always "toward" the probe.
• The Latching OK Mode and the Not OK Channel Defeat options are not compatible.
• The composite zero position voltage depends on the composite full-scale range and
transducer type.
• The Direct full-scale ranges are one half of the composite range. You cannot set the
Direct full-scale ranges.

4.2.3 Upscale Direction

Channel 1 is the reference probe for channel pair (1,2) and channel 3 probe is the
reference probe for channel pair (3,41). This field defines whether rotor movement
toward or away from the channel 1 probe for channel pair (1,2) or the channel 3 probe
for pair (3,4) corresponds to positive differential expansion (for example upscale on a bar
graph). If this field is set to "Toward Probe 1", then the differential expansion composite
proportional value will increase and go upscale on a bar graph as the rotor moves
toward the channel 1 probe.

4.3.2 Clamp Value

The value sent to the recorders and ModbusTM when the monitor receives invalid input.
Invalid input can be caused by:
• Channel Not OK status
• Monitor Not Ok status
The clamp value is not shown on the monitor display or in the 3500 Rack Configuration
software.
• 3500 Systems:
The monitor clamps only the Recorder Outputs and the values provided through the
Communication Gateway and Display Interface Module when the static value is
invalid.
• 3500 ENCORE Systems:
The monitor clamps only the Recorder Outputs and the values provided over
Modbus when the static value is invalid.

4.3.3 Gap Range

The –24 Vdc Gap Range is the same for all transducer types and is not adjustable.

4.3.4 Delay
Delay is the time for which a static value must remain at or above an over alarm level,
or below an under alarm level, before the monitor declares an alarm as active.

11
CIDE Measurement Configuration and Verification Manual

4.3.4.1 Alert Delay

You can set the Alert time delay in 1 second increments (from 1 to 60 seconds) for all
available static values. Alert is the first level alarm that occurs when the transducer
signal level exceeds the selected Alert/Alarm 1 setpoint. You can set this setpoint on the
Setpoint screen.

4.3.4.2 Danger Delay

You can set the Danger Time Delay at 500 millisecond increments from 1 to 60 seconds.
Danger is the second level alarm that occurs when the transducer signal level exceeds
the selected Danger/Alarm 2 setpoint. You can set this setpoint on the Setpoint screen.

4.3.4.3 100 ms Option

The 100 ms (typical) option applies only to the Danger time delay and has the following
effects:
If the 100 ms option is OFF:
• You can set the Danger time delay in 1-second increments (from 1 to 60 seconds).
• You can set the Danger time delay for up to 2 available static values.
If the 100 ms option is ON:
• The software sets the Danger time delay to 100 ms.
• You can set the Danger time delay for only the primary static value.

4.3.5 Alarm Mode

The options for Alarm Mode are Latching and Non-latching. You can set the Alarm Mode
option for both the Alert and Danger alarms.

4.3.5.1 Latching

Once a latching alarm is active, it will remain active even after the static value drops
below the configured setpoint level. The channel will remain in alarm until you use one
of the following methods to reset it:
• Pressing the RESET button on the System Monitor
• Closing the contact on the Power Input Module (PIM)
• Clicking the Reset button in the Operator Display software 1
• Issuing a reset command over Modbus
• Issuing a reset command through the Display Interface Module 1
• Issuing a reset command in the 3500 Rack Configuration Software
12
Section 4 - Configuration
1
3500 Only

4.3.5.2 Non-latching

When a non-latching alarm is active, it changes to inactive as soon as the static value
drops below the configured setpoint level.

4.3.6 OK Mode
Latching
If you configure a channel for Latching OK, then once the channel has gone Not OK, the
status will stay Not OK until you use one of the following methods to reset it:
• Pressing the RESET button on the System Monitor
• Closing the contact on the Power Input Module (PIM)
• Clicking the Reset button in the Operator Display software 1
• Issuing a reset command over Modbus
• Issuing a reset command through the Display Interface Module 1
• Issuing a reset command in the 3500 Rack Configuration Software
1
3500 Only
Non-latching
If you configure a channel for Non-latching OK, the OK status of that channel will track
the defined OK status of the transducer.

4.3.7 Not OK Channel Pair Defeat

This option allows you to define how the channel pair handles alarming and static value
reporting when one or both of the channels transition to, or from, a Not OK condition
and the transition causes the Channel Pair OK State to change
Disabled
The channel pair will annunciate an Alarm and maintain an Alarm even if the channel
pair state is Not OK. Also, the channel pair will continue to report all of the static values
for the channel pair. After the channel pair returns to the OK state the OK Relay will
energize and the OK LED on the front of the monitor will turn on.
Enabled
The channel pair will defeat an existing composite Alarm if the Alarm Mode is Non-
latching when the channel pair becomes Not OK and will invalidate the Composite and
Direct static values returned by both channels. When the Not OK channel(s) return to the
OK state there will be a 10 second delay before the channel pair returns to normal
monitoring. The OK LED on the front panel will turn on and flash at 2 Hz (2 times a
second) to indicate the monitor has been Not OK. To stop the OK LED from flashing,
13
CIDE Measurement Configuration and Verification Manual
enable the system reset. Not OK Channel Pair Defeat cannot be enabled if the OK Mode
is Latching.

4.3.8 Recorder Output

This determines the proportional value the monitor will send to the 4 to 20 mA recorder.
The composite proportional value is the only selection. The recorder output is
proportional to the measured value of composite full-scale range. An increase in the
composite proportional value that a bar graph display indicates as upscale will increase
the current at the recorder output. If either channel of the channel pair is bypassed, the
monitor will clamp the output to the selected clamp value (or to 2 mA if the 2 mA clamp
is selected). Since differential expansion requires both channels of the channel pair to
make the measurement, a single composite proportional value is available for the
channel pair. This composite value is available on the first recorder channel for the
channel pair (channel 1 or 3). The remaining recorder channel in the pair will always
read 4 mA.

4.3.8.1 Two mA Clamp

Click this check box to cause the monitor to clamp the Recorder Output for a Bypassed
channel to 2 mA.
Clear this check box to cause the monitor to use the selected clamp value for a
Bypassed channel.

4.3.9 Adjust (Cross Over Voltage, Direct)

Click this button to set the Cross Over Voltage (COV) for the respective channel. The
utility provides active feedback from the 3500/45 monitor rack and requires a
connection to the rack. Refer to Sections "Adjusting the Scale Factor" "Zero Position
Adjustment" and "Cross Over Voltage".

4.4 Available Setpoints

The table below lists the Alert/Alarm 1 and Danger/Alarm 2 setpoints that are available
for the CIDE channel types. Modbus uses the setpoint number.

NOTE
The setpoint over and under limits may be less than the linear range of the
transducer depending on the ramp angle and full-scale range.
You can set the composite measured value setpoints independently on each
channel of the channel pair. You must adjust setpoints on both channels of
the channel pair.

5. Verification

5.1 Test Equipment and Software Setup

You can use the following test equipment and software setup as the initial set up that
all the verification procedures require.

5.1.1 Test Equipment Setup

The verification procedures in this section require the following test equipment.
• Two Single-channel power supplies
• 4-1/2 digit multimeter

DANGER

High voltage present. Contact with high voltage can cause shock, burns, or
death. Do not touch exposed wires or terminals.

ADVISORY
1. Test levels will exceed alarm setpoint levels and activate alarms. This
could result in a relay contact state change.
2. Disconnecting field wiring will cause a Not OK condition.

Connect the power supplies and multimeter to the COM and SIG terminals of the two
channels of the channel pair with polarity as shown in the Figure below to simulate the
transducer signal. The test equipment outputs should be floating relative to earth
ground.

1. Run the 3500 Rack Configuration Software on the test computer.
2. Choose Verification from the Utilities menu.
3. Choose the proper Slot number and Channel number.
4. Click the Verify button.

5.2 Adjusting the Scale Factor

Enter a value for scale factor in the Scale Factor box within the range specified below
the box. Use the up/down arrows to scroll to the desired value or go to the Adjust
screen by clicking Adjust button at the right side of the Scale Factor field.
Using the Adjust Button
1. Click the Adjust button. The Adjust Scale Factor dialog is displayed.
2. Enter a value in the Scale Factor box or use the up/down arrows to scroll to the
desired scale factor value.

17
CIDE Measurement Configuration and Verification Manual
The advantage of using the Adjust Scale Factor screen is that you can use the bar
graphs to see the effect of your adjustments on the output signals of the channel.

5.3 Adjusting the Cross Over Voltage

The CIDE measurement uses two transducers as shown in the Figure below.

1. Gap curve for Channel A

2. Gap curve for Channel B
3. Cross Over Voltage
4. Direct full-scale range voltage for Channel B
5. Direct full-scale range voltage for Channel A
6. Composite full-scale range.

Figure 5-10: CIDE Measurement

The Cross Over Voltages (COVs) are the gap voltages that the monitor uses to determine
which transducer is “in range”. The “in range” transducer is the one that is at, or below
(more positive than), it’s COV. A COV is set on each channel of the channel pair. The
COVs are also the Zero Position Voltages for the Direct measured values.
The full-scale range of each Direct measured value is one-half of the Composite range
and the COVs define the middle point of the Composite range.
A zero reference voltage is also shown in the Composite values zero reference box in
the Verification screen. The value is derived from the COVs, is not adjustable, and is not
used for any maintenance or installation procedure. The COVs depend on the
Composite full-scale range, the transducer type and scale factor.
1. Connect and configure the channels then, after changes are completed, download
the configuration to the rack.

18
Section 5 - Verification
2. On the Variables + Alarms screen, enter a value in the Crossover Voltage box for
Crossover Voltage within the range specified below the box, use the up/down
arrows to scroll to the desired value or go to the Adjust function by clicking the
Adjust button at the right side of the COV field for the channel of interest.
The difference between the COV of the two channels must be less than ±0.60 volts.
Using the Adjust Button
If you use the Adjust function, you can adjust the Cross Over Voltage and see the
results.
1. Click the Adjust button. The Crossover Adjust screen is displayed.
2. Enter the voltage in the C.O. Volts box above the Direct bar graph display.
When you adjust the COVs you are defining the “switch point” (i.e., the zero reference for
the Direct measured values) and the midpoint of the Composite range. The Figure
shows the relationship of the Composite meter range to the Direct meter ranges and
the COVs. You should set the Cross Over Voltages as close as possible to the value
displayed in the COV text box in the CIDE Channel Pair Option screen.

Figure 5-11: Relationship of Composite Meter Range for Direct Meter Range and COVs

5.4 Test Alarms

You test the alarm levels by varying the output from the test equipment and verifying
that the Verification screen reports the correct results on the test computer. You need
test only those alarm parameters that are configured and being used. The general test
procedure to verify current alarm operation will include simulating a transducer input
signal and varying this signal:
• to exceed over Alert/Alarm 1 and Danger/Alarm 2 Setpoints
• to drop below any under Alert/Alarm 1 and Danger/Alarm 2 Setpoints
• to produce a non-alarm condition

19
CIDE Measurement Configuration and Verification Manual

5.4.1 Composite
1. Disconnect the field wiring from the PWR, COM, and SIG channel terminals on the
I/O module.
2. Connect the test equipment and run the software as described in the section, “Test
Equipment and Software Setup."
3. Adjust the power supply voltage to be within the setpoint levels on the bar graph
display of the Verification screen.
You can usually do this by setting the power supplies to the cross over voltages for
each channel of the channel pair. Note that the Cross Over voltage is displayed over
the Direct bar graph display in the Verification screen. You can check each channel
of the channel pair by changing the selected channel using the Channel dropdown
list box in the Verification screen.
4. Press the RESET switch on the System Monitor. Verify that the OK LED is on, the
color of the bar graph indicator is green, and the Current Value field contains no
alarm indication.
5. Adjust the power supply voltage to just exceed the Over Alert/Alarm 1 setpoint level
and wait for 2 or 3 seconds after the alarm time delay expires. Verify that the color
of the bar graph indicator changes from green to yellow and that the Current Value
Field indicates an alarm.
6. Press the RESET switch. Verify that the color of the bar graph indicator remains
yellow and that the Current Value Field still indicates an alarm.
7. Adjust the power supply voltage to just exceed the Over Danger/Alarm 2 setpoint
level and wait for 2 or 3 seconds after the alarm time delay expires. Verify that the
color of the bar graph indicator changes from yellow to red and that the Current
Value Field indicates an alarm.
8. Press the RESET switch. Verify that the color of the bar graph indicator remains red
and that the Current Value Field still indicates an alarm.
9. Adjust the power supply voltage below the Over Alert setpoint levels. If the non-
latching option is configured, verify that the color of the bar graph indicator
changes to green and that the Current Value Box contains no indication of alarms.
Press the RESET switch to reset latching alarms.
10. Repeat steps 3 through 9 to test the Under Alert/Alarm 1 and Under Danger/Alarm
2 setpoints by adjusting the power supply voltage to exceed the Under Alarm
setpoint levels.
11. If you cannot verify any configured alarm, check the configured setpoints again. If
the monitor still does not alarm properly or fails any other part of this test, you
must replace the monitor. Refer to "If a Channel Fails a Verification Test" in your
monitor hardware manual.

12. Disconnect the test equipment and reconnect the field wiring to the PWR, COM, and
SIG channel terminals on the I/O module. Verify that the OK LED comes on and that
the OK relay energizes. Press the RESET switch to reset the OK LED.
13. Repeat steps 1 through 12 for all configured channels.
14. Disable the Enable Direct (Aux 1) Software Switch:
1. Close the Verification screen.
2. From the Utilities menu, select Software Switches.
3. Select the appropriate slot.
4. Disable Switch 5 (Enable Direct (Aux 1)).
5. Select Set to download the new switch setting.

5.5 Verify Channel Values

The general approach for testing these parameters is to simulate the transducer signals
with a power supply on each channel of the channel pair. Verify the output values by
changing the input DC voltage and observing that the test computer reports the correct
results in the Verification screen.

5.5.1 Verify Channel Composite and Direct Values

The Composite value is the differential expansion measurement that is of interest to an
operator. The software calculates this value from the Direct measured values of the two
channels of the channel pair. The Rack Configuration Software automatically sets the
Direct value configuration parameters, such as full-scale range and zero position
voltage, based on the Composite full-scale range, cross over voltage, and transducer
type.
1. Disconnect the field wiring from the PWR, COM, and SIG channel terminals on the
I/O module.
2. Connect the test equipment and run the software as described in the section, “Test
Equipment and Software Setup."
3. Calculate the full-scale and bottoms scale values using the formulas below.

Direct Full Scale = COV + (0.5 * TSF * MR)

Direct Bottom Scale = COV

TSF = Transducer Scale Factor in Volts/ Composite meter

scale units
MR = Composite Meter Range (the span from Composite
Bottom Range scale to Composite Full-scale Value)
COV = Cross Over Voltage

Example 1
Channel Pair: (1,2)1
1
Channel Pair on a 3500/45E connected to 3300 I/O
module is (1,3).
Transducer Types: 35 mm (TSF = 20 mV/mil or 20 V/inch)
Composite Full-scale: 0.5 inch - 0 - 0.5 inch
Chan 1 COV: -11.6 V
Chan 2 COV: -11.8 V
Upscale Direction: Towards Probe 1

Channel 1 Direct Full-scale Volts = (-11.6) + (0.5) (20 V/inch) (1 inch)

= -1.6 Vdc
Channel 2 Direct Full-scale Volts = (-11.8) + (0.5) (20 V/inch) (1 inch)
= -1.8 Vdc
Composite Full Scale = Channel 1 Direct Full Scale with Channel 2 more
negative than its COV
Composite Bottom Scale = Channel 2 Direct Full Scale with Channel 1 more
negative than its COV

Example 2
Channel Pair: (1,2)1
1
Channel Pair on a 3500/45E connected to 3300 I/O
module is (1,3).
Transducer Types: 50 mm DE (TSF = 0.3937V/mm on channel 1 and
0.4055 V/mm on channel 2)
Composite Full-scale: 10 mm - 0 - 40 mm
Chan 1 COV: -11.64 V
Chan 2 COV: -11.94 V

= -1.8 Vdc
Channel 2 Direct Full-scale Volts = (-11.94) + (0.5) (0.4055V/mm) (50 mm)
= -1.8 Vdc
Composite Full Scale = Channel 2 Direct Full Scale with Channel 1 more
negative than its COV
Composite Bottom Scale = Channel 1 Direct Full Scale with Channel 2 more
negative than its COV

Section 5 - Verification

NOTE
1. The Cross Over Voltage is the voltage input that will cause the reading
on the Direct bar graph display and Current Value Box to be zero. The
Cross Over Voltage is displayed in the COV box above the Direct value
bar graph for each channel of the channel pair. When both channels are
at the COV, the Composite bar graph display and Current Value Box
should indicate mid-scale (for example, if the scale is 4 mm - 0 - 16 mm,
a reading of 6 mm is mid-scale).
2. A value is also displayed in the Composite COV box above the
Composite bar graph. This value is not adjustable and is not used for
any installation or maintenance operation.
3. Use the Transducer Scale Factor displayed in the Scale Factor Box on
the Verification Screen for the appropriate channel when using the
formulas below.

4. Adjust the power supply voltages to match the voltage displayed in the COV. Volts
box for the Direct value on both channels. Verify that the Direct bar graph display
and the Current Value Box is reading 0 inches (0 mm) +/-1% for both channels of
the channel pair. Verify that the Composite bar graph display and Current Value Box
is reading mid-scale +/-1%.
5. Determine which channel is the upscale channel. On the upscale channel adjust the
power supply voltage to the Direct full-scale value calculated for that channel.
Adjust the power supply on the other channel to be more negative than its COV.
Verify that the Composite bar graph display and Current Value Box is reading full
scale +/-1%. If the recorder is configured, refer to Section 5.1.10 (Verify Recorder
Outputs) for steps to verify the recorder output.
Adjust the power supply voltage on both channels to the calculated full-scale
voltage. Verify that the Composite bar graph display and its Current Value Box is
reading full scale +/-Tc%. If the recorder output is configured, refer to Section "Verify
Recorder Outputs" in your hardware manual for steps to verify the recorder output.
Verify that the Direct bar graph displays and Current Value Boxes for both channels
are reading full scale +/-Tr%.
6. Determine which channel is the downscale channel. On the downscale channel
adjust the power supply voltage to the Direct full-scale value calculated for that
channel. Adjust the power supply on the other channel to be more negative than its
COV. Verify that the Composite bar graph display and Current Value Box is reading
bottom scale +/-1%. If the recorder is configured, refer to Section 5.1.10 (Verify
Recorder Outputs) for steps to verify the recorder output.
7. If the readings do not meet specifications, verify that the input signal is correct. If
the monitor still does not meet specifications or fails any other part of this test, you
must replace the monitor. See the section “If a Channel Fails a Verification Test” in
your hardware manual.
8. Disconnect the test equipment and reconnect the field wiring to the PWR, COM, and
SIG channel terminals on the I/O module. Verify that the OK LED comes on and that
the OK relay energizes. Press the RESET switch to reset the OK LED.
9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for all configured channel pairs.
10. Disable the Enable Direct (Aux 1) Software Switch:
23

2. From the Utilities menu, select Software Switches.
3. Select the appropriate slot.
4. Disable Switch 5 (Enable Direct (Aux 1)).
5. Select Set to download the new switch setting.

5.6 Test OK Limits

The general approach for testing OK limits is for you to input a dc voltage and adjust
the voltage above the Upper OK Limit and below the Lower OK Limit. This will produce a
channel Not OK condition and cause the OK Relay to change state (de-energize). The
test computer displays the Upper OK Limit and Lower OK Limits on the Verification
screen.
1. Disconnect PWR, COM, and SIG field wiring from the channel terminals on the I/O
Module from both channels of the channel pair.
2. Connect the test equipment and run the software as described in the section, “Test
Equipment and Software Setup."
3. Bypass all other configured channels.
4. Adjust both of the power supply voltages to -9.00 Vdc.
5. Press the RESET switch on the Rack Interface Module (RIM). Verify that the monitor
OK LED is on and that the Channel OK State line in the Channel Status box of the
Verification screen reads OK for both channels.

NOTE
If the Danger Bypass is active, then the BYPASS LED will be on. All other
channels in the rack must be OK or bypassed for the OK relay to energize.

6. Verify that the OK relay on the System Monitor indicates OK (is energized). (See the
appropriate System Monitor manual for more information.)
7. Increase both power supply voltages (more negative) until the OK LED just goes off
(upper limit). Verify that the Channel OK State line in the Channel Status box reads
Not OK for both channels and that the OK Relay indicates Not OK. Verify that the
Upper OK limit voltage displayed on the Verification screen is equal to or more
positive than the input voltage.
Increase the power supply voltage (more negative) until the OK LED just goes off
(upper limit). Verify that the Channel OK State line on the Verification screen reads
Not OK and that the OK Relay indicates Not OK. Verify that Verification screen
displays an Upper OK Limit voltage that is equal to or more positive than the input
voltage.

8. Adjust both of the power supply voltages to -9.00 Vdc.
9. Press the RESET switch. Verify that the OK LED comes back on and that the OK relay
energizes. Verify that the Channel OK State line in the Channel Status section reads
OK.
10. Gradually decrease the power supply voltage on channel 1 (or 3 for pair 3,4 1) (less
negative) until the OK LED just goes off (lower limit). Verify that the Channel OK State
line in the Channel Status box reads Not OK and that the OK Relay indicates Not
OK. Verify that the Lower OK limit voltage displayed on the Verification screen is
equal to or more negative than the input voltage.
11. Increase the power supply voltage (more negative) to -9.00 Vdc on channel 1 (or 3
for pair 3,41).
12. Press the RESET switch. Verify that the OK LED comes back on and that the OK relay
energizes. Verify that the Channel OK State line in the Channel Status section reads
OK.
13. Gradually decrease the power supply voltage on channel 2 (or 4 for pair 3,4 1) (less
negative) until the OK LED just goes off (lower limit). Verify that the Channel OK State
line in the Channel Status box reads Not OK and that the OK Relay indicates Not
OK. Verify that the Lower OK limit voltage displayed on the Verification screen is
equal to or more negative than the input voltage.
14. Increase the power supply voltage (more negative) to -9.00 Vdc on channel 2 (or 4
for pair 3,41).
15. Press the RESET switch. Verify that the OK LED comes back on and that the OK relay
energizes. Verify that the Channel OK State line in the Channel Status section reads
OK.
16. If you cannot verify any configured OK limit, you must replace the monitor. Refer to
“If a Channel Fails a Verification Test” in your monitor hardware manual.
17. Repeat steps 2 through 13 for the other channel of the channel pair.
18. Disconnect the test equipment and reconnect the field wiring to the PWR, COM, and
SIG channel terminals on the I/O module. Verify that the OK LED comes on and that
the OK relay energizes. Press the RESET switch to reset the OK LED.
