4. Configuration Considerations
• Measure the Valve Position using:
• Rotary Potentiometers with a Rotary Pot I/O, or
• AC LVDTs with an AC LVDT I/O, or
• Rotary Position Transducers with a standard Position I/O.
• Rotary Pot Position I/O modules are available only if Valve Position is chosen for
Channel Pair 1 and 2 AND Channel Pair 3 and 4.1
• Applications normally measure valve position by using a linear displacement
transducer to measure the position of the valve stem relative to its full stroke,

1. Valve Stem
2. LVDT

5.1.3 Customize Button, AC LVDT

Use this option to adjust the Channel Sensitivity of the channel with the AC LVDT and its
associated field wiring. Find the sensitivity of your particular AC LVDT on the calibration
sheet that came with the transducer. The Channel Sensitivity may vary slightly from the
calibration sheet sensitivity due to the field wiring and variance in excitation drive
signal.
If you select Nonstandard as the transducer type, you can adjust the Channel Sensitivity
and the OK Limits. The Nonstandard transducer's Sensitivity and OK Limits are restricted
to the values below the boxes. There must be at least 0.2 volts between the Full Upscale
voltage and the Upper OK Limit and between the Full Downscale voltage and the Lower
OK Limit. There must be at least 2 volts between the Upper and Lower OK Limits and the
Upper limit must be less (more negative) than the Lower OK Limit.

Non-latching
If you configure a channel for Non-latching OK, the OK status of that channel will track
the defined OK status of the transducer.

6.2.7 Not OK Channel Defeat

Disabled (box cleared)
The channel drives an alarm even when the channel is in the Not OK state if the alarm
setpoint has been exceeded for the Delay time.
Enabled (box checked)
The channel inhibits alarming if the channel goes to a Not OK condition.
The Not OK condition must be removed for 10 seconds before monitoring resumes.

6.2.8 Recorder Output

The recorder output is the static value of a channel that the monitor sends to the 4 to
20 mA recorder. The recorder output is proportional to the measured value over the
channel full-scale range. An increase of the static value increases the current at the
recorder output.

6.2.8.1 Two mA Clamp

7.1.3.1 Adjust Button

After initially downloading configuration to the monitor, use this button to adjust the Full
Upscale or Full Downscale voltage of the Rotary Position Transducer when stroking the
valve. The Scale Factor will change accordingly as you change the Upscale/Downscale
voltages.
Since this utility provides active feedback from the 3500 rack, it requires a connection
with the rack.

7.1.3.2 Valve Opening Direction

The monitor uses this setting to identify whether the most negative voltage of the
usable voltage range correlates to Full Upscale or Full Downscale. The Valve Opening
Direction means the direction the shaft on the Rotary Position Transducer must turn to
open the valve(s) when viewed from the driver end of the transducer (i.e., the end
attached to the camshaft). The direction of rotation can be either clockwise (CW) or
counter-clockwise (CCW).

7.1.4 Valve Stroke Displacement

This parameter sets the actual full stroke rotational displacement of the cam shaft. The
stroke displacement will correlate to 0 to 100% open or closed.
The stroke displacement can be as large as transducer's range or as small as 1/2 the
transducer's range.

ADVISORY
Generally, the Rotary Position Transducer interfaces to the camshaft when the
valves are fully closed. The following table gives the formulas to calculate the
voltage output of the Rotary Position Transducer when the valves are fully
closed. This voltage is based on the transducer’s scale factor, the valve
opening direction, the configured full-scale range, and the configured valve
stroke displacement.

7.2.2 Position
The position Full-scale voltage range is –24 to 0 Vdc. It is not adjustable.

7.2.3 Clamp Value

The value sent to the recorders and ModbusTM when the monitor receives invalid input.
Invalid input can be caused by:
• Channel Not OK status
• Monitor Not Ok status
The clamp value is not shown on the monitor display or in the 3500 Rack Configuration
software.
• 3500 Systems:
The monitor clamps only the Recorder Outputs and the values provided through the
Communication Gateway and Display Interface Module when the static value is
invalid.
• 3500 ENCORE Systems:
The monitor clamps only the Recorder Outputs and the values provided over
Modbus when the static value is invalid.

7.2.4 Delay
Delay is the time for which a static value must remain at or above an over alarm level,
or below an under alarm level, before the monitor declares an alarm as active.

7.2.4.1 Alert Delay

You can set the Alert time delay in 1 second increments (from 1 to 60 seconds) for all
available static values. Alert is the first level alarm that occurs when the transducer
signal level exceeds the selected Alert/Alarm 1 setpoint. You can set this setpoint on the
Setpoint screen.

7.2.4.2 Danger Delay

You can set the Danger Time Delay at 500 millisecond increments from 1 to 60 seconds.
Danger is the second level alarm that occurs when the transducer signal level exceeds
the selected Danger/Alarm 2 setpoint. You can set this setpoint on the Setpoint screen.

7.2.4.3 100 ms Option

The 100 ms (typical) option applies only to the Danger time delay and has the following
effects:
27
Valve Position Configuration and Verification Manual
If the 100 ms option is OFF:
• You can set the Danger time delay in 1-second increments (from 1 to 60 seconds).
• You can set the Danger time delay for up to 2 available static values.
If the 100 ms option is ON:
• The software sets the Danger time delay to 100 ms.
• You can set the Danger time delay for only the primary static value.

7.2.5 Alarm Mode

The options for Alarm Mode are Latching and Non-latching. You can set the Alarm Mode
option for both the Alert and Danger alarms.

7.2.5.1 Latching

Once a latching alarm is active, it will remain active even after the static value drops
below the configured setpoint level. The channel will remain in alarm until you use one
of the following methods to reset it:
• Pressing the RESET button on the System Monitor
• Closing the contact on the Power Input Module (PIM)
• Clicking the Reset button in the Operator Display software 1
• Issuing a reset command over Modbus

9. Verification

9.1 Test Equipment and Software Setup

You can use the following test equipment and software setup as the initial set up that
all the verification procedures require.

9.1.1 Test Equipment Setup - AC LVDT

Generally, you should determine the electrical null position of the AC LVDT while it is not
connected to the I/O mobule. Verify that terminals 4 and 5, and only terminals 4 and 5,
of the AC LVDT are shorted together.

ALERT
Do not power an AC LVDT from the I/O without the AC LVDT core in place.
This could result in damage to the monitor and/ or rack.

1. Use a function generator to input a 3.3 Vrms (±0.5 Vrms), 0 Vdc offset, 3400 Hz sine
wave signal into terminals 1 and 2 of the AC LVDT. If a function generator is not
available, terminals 1 and 2 on the back of the internal termination AC LVDT I/O or
the respective terminals of the external termination block can be used to provide a
drive signal of 3.3 Vrms (±0.5 Vrms), -11 Vdc offset, 3400 Hz sine wave to power the
AC LVDT while finding the null position.

3. Multimeter
4. Short terminals 4 and 5 together
5. Mark electrical null on extension rod when multimeter reads the minimum
AC voltage

Figure 9-18: Finding Electrical Null on AC LCDT using a Function Generator

2. Use a multimeter to measure the AC voltage output across terminals 3 and 6 of the
AC LVDT. As you move the core of the AC LVDT, observe that the AC voltage across
terminals 3 and 6 decreases from some maximum value to some minimum value
(near the core's center) and then back to some maximum value. Move the AC LVDT's
core until you obtain the minimum AC voltage near the core's center. Mark the core
extension rod to identify this electrical null position of the AC LVDT. Once you
correctly configure the monitor, this null position should equate to a Position
measurement of -11.04 Vdc (±0.24 Vdc).

35
Valve Position Configuration and Verification Manual
3. Place a mark on the LVDT core extension rod equal to half the full range of the AC
LVDT on each side of the electrical null mark. For example, if the full range of the AC
LVDT is 2 inches, then make a mark 1 inch from null position on each side of the
rod. Use these marks to position the core during installation and verification.
Typically, the monitor can be configured for a range down to 50% of the full range
of the AC LVDT.
4. If you will enable alarms in the monitor configuration, you can also mark the alarm
points on the extension rod. For example, if you will set a Danger over alarm for
90% of full scale, then mark the rod at 90% of the full-scale range distance that you
previously marked in Step 3.
5. Interface the AC LVDT to the machine.
6. Connect the AC LVDT to the I/O.

7. Observe that the AC LVDT housing has an orientation mark at one end, and that the
core itself has an orientation mark at one end. When you configure the monitor,
downscale should correspond to movement of the LVDT core in the direction that is
away from the LVDT's housing orientation mark. The opposite direction of rod
travel will correspond to upscale. If this is not the case, you should reverse the
wires at terminals 3 and 6 of either the LVDT or the I/O (but not at both).

1. Core orientation mark

2. Housing orientation mark
3. Extension rod

Figure 9-21: AC LVDT Orientation Marks

8. The datasheet that came with the AC LVDT states the sensitivity of the AC LVDT.
The configuration software uses a default sensitivity (based on your transducer
37
Valve Position Configuration and Verification Manual
type) in its calculations until you adjust the sensitivity or the Full Upscale or Full
Downscale voltages during configuration.
You can calculate the loop Channel Sensitivity for a channel when the AC LVDT and
its associated field wiring are interfaced to the monitor and I/O as follows:
1. Measure the AC voltage in Vac across I/O terminals 1 and 2 to get V ex. This is
the excitation signal that is driving the AC LVDT.
2. Set Range to the full transducer range in inches that you marked in step 3
above.
3. Measure the AC voltage in Vac across I/O terminals 3 and 6 while the core is at
one end of its full range that you marked in step 3 above. This is V 1.
4. Measure the AC voltage in Vac across I/O terminals 3 and 6 while the core is at
the opposite end of its full range. This is V2.
5. Calculate the Channel Sensitivity using the following equation:
Channel Sensitivity = (V1 + V2) / Range / Vex

The units are V / V / inch which is the same as mV / V / mil

Example:
Calculate the Channel Sensitivity when using a ±1” AC LVDT with 1000 feet of
field wiring:
Vex = 2.297 Vac
V1 = 0.974 Vac
V2 = 0.971 Vac
Range = 2 inches
Channel Sensitivity = (V1 + V2) / Range / Vex
= (0.974 + 0.971) / 2 / 2.297
= 0.423 mV/V/mil

9. You can manually enter the Channel Sensitivity during configuration or the software
will be automatically calculate and adjust it when you set the full upscale and
downscale voltages of the system.
10. The DC voltage output (Position PPL) at any given AC LVDT rod position is related to
the Channel Sensitivity by the following equation:
Vout = 11.04 ± Channel Sensitivity x d x 9.55)
where: 11.04 is from step 2 above
d is the distance moved from the null position

The ± depends on which direction from null the rod has been moved

38
Section 9 - Verification

DANGER

High voltage present. Contact with high voltage can cause shock, burns, or
death. Do not touch exposed wires or terminals.

NOTE
Tests will exceed alarm levels and cause alarms to activate. This could result
in a relay change.
Disconnecting field wiring will cause a Not OK condition.

9.1.2 Test Equipment Setup - Rotary Potentiometer

For the input test signal you can use a spare Rotary Pot of the same type as the one
that is interfaced to the machine.
The maximum full-scale rotation that the Rotary Pot can measure is 300 degrees. The
minimum full-scale rotation that the Rotary Pot can measure is 50 degrees.
When the monitor is configured for 0 to 100% open, direct upscale corresponds to
rotating the potentiometer (as viewed from the top) in a counter clockwise direction so
that the resistance measured between the “S” and “CW” terminals increases. Rotation of
the shaft in the direction shown in the Figure should increase the resistance between “S”
and “CW”. This results in an upscale reading. Conversely, when the monitor is configured
for 0 to 100% closed, this direction of rotation corresponds to downscale rotation but
will still give an increase in the resistance measured between the “S” and “CW”
terminals.
1. With the pot disconnected from the I/O, measure the resistance between “S” and
“CW”. The resistance will increase when the shaft rotates in a counter clockwise
direction when viewed from the top (see Figure).

Figure 9-22: Rotary Potentiometer top View

39
Valve Position Configuration and Verification Manual
2. Make a mark on the pot at the point of the maximum resistance, making sure that
the wiper is still in contact with the coils, and note of this resistance value.
When interfaced to a properly configured monitor, this point will correspond to a
Position measurement reading (in the Verification dialog screen) of -17.38 Vdc
nominal. This point also corresponds to full upscale when configured for 0 to 100%
open or corresponds to full downscale when configured for 0 to 100% closed.
If you must reverse this, you can reverse the wires at terminals CW and CCW of
either the rotary pot or the I/O, but not at both.
3. Make another mark on the pot that will equate to full scale in the clockwise
direction from the mark you made in step 2 above. Note the resistance measured
at this point. This point corresponds to full downscale when configured for 0 to
100% open or to full upscale when configured for 0 to 100% closed.
If you must reverse this, you can reverse the wires at terminals CW and CCW of
either the rotary pot or the I/O, but not at both.

NOTE
For convenience, mark these same resistance positions on a spare Rotary Pot
that you can use to verify the channel during maintenance.

4. If you will enable alarms in the monitor configuration, you can also mark the alarm
points on the pot. For example, if you will set a Danger over alarm for 90% of full
scale then mark the pot at 90% of the full scale stroke travel that you marked
above.
5. Interface the Rotary Pot to the camshaft so that the marks made in steps 2 and 3
correspond to the endpoints of the rotation of the rotary pot with respect to the
actual full valve stroke.
6. Connect the Rotary Pot to the I/O.

7. After configuring and downloading the 3500 software settings for the rotary pot
valve position channel, stroke the valve and use the Adjust utility to set the voltage
endpoints that will exactly equate to 0 and 100% open or closed.
As you stroke the valve and adjust the Full Upscale and Downscale voltages, the
Scale Factor will change accordingly, based on the full stroke rotation previously
configured.

NOTE
The 3500 configuration software uses a default Scale Factor of 41 mV/degree
rotation until you adjust the Full Upscale or Full Downscale voltages while
stroking the valve.

The DC voltage output (Position measurement in the 3500 verification screen) at any
given degrees of rotation is related to the Scale Factor by the following:
Vdc(out) = V1 + (S.F. * D) where:

V1 = the voltage reading when the cam shaft is positioned at

the range endpoint where the resistance between “S” and
“CW” is maximum
(see step 2, above; approximately –17.38 Vdc),

41
Valve Position Configuration and Verification Manual
S.F. = Scale Factor
D = the position from the –17.38 Vdc endpoint in degrees of
rotation.

9.1.3 Test Equipment Setup - Rotary Position Transducer

The verification procedures in this section require the following test equipment.
• Single-channel power supply
• 4-1/2 digit multimeter

DANGER
