1. Study Source A carefully and answer the questions which follow.

Source A

(a) What does Source A suggest about Cecil Rhodes’ ambitions in Africa? Explain your
answer, referring to the details of the source. [4 marks]

(b) Explain two effects of the Hut Tax on the Batswana during the colonial period. [6 marks]

2. Study source B carefully and answer the questions, which follow.

Source B

...in open country large, deep pits were dug and two bush fences built in the shape of a ‘V’.
Animals were driven into the mouth of the V until they fell into the pit where they were
speared. In the second method, a large number of men surrounded an animal, and then made
the circle smaller...the furnace was carefully hidden in narrow valleys in the hills, where the
ore was brought to the village after smelting.
