Mother Teresa Memorial Awards For Social Justice 2020 Announced
• On December 27, 2020, Harmony Foundation hosted the Mother Teresa Memorial Awards for Social
Justice.
• The Awards in its 16th year is the only award endorsed by Sister Prema, the Superior General of the
Missionaries of Charity, the organization started by Mother Teresa.
• The theme for this year's awards was, Celebrating Compassion In Times Of Covid
• Dr Anthony Fauci (USA) is the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, USA.
He and his task force were among the first ones to realize the seriousness of this pandemic.
• Fr Fabio Stevenazzi (Milan, Italy) decision to return to medical practice in order to help those infected
with COVID 19 has thrust him to be the modern day example of St Charles Borromeo who in 1576 during
the Great Plague that hit the city of Milan and cut the population by half, stayed behind to nurse the sick
and renovate hospitals.
• Dr Pradeep Kumar (Chennai) took it upon himself to give a befitting burial to his colleague with the help
of two ward boys, at a cemetery in the city in the middle of the night.

• Cristian Fracassi and Alessandro Romaioli (Italy) CEO and Founder of ISINNOVA along with his
teammate and engineer Alessandro Romaioli built prototypes on Isinnova's 3D printers, to create the parts

for free helped many patients survive the terrors of this pandemic.
• Sanjay Pandey, IPS (DG Home Guards, Maharashtra) went beyond the call of duty as a police officer to

• A 19-year-old Indian student in Singapore is keeping his options open on a startup named “TEAMLABS”
he has built with four applications in his teenage while schooling.
• While keeping up with his schooling for a diploma in business administration at Singapore Polytechnic,
Harsh Dalal, as CEO, has built 120-employee Team Labs’ business across eight cities.
• The software development company’s clients include the Coca-Cola Company, Google and Hilton,
featuring Dalal among young entrepreneurs shaping Singapore into a smart nation and for running a USD
25 million tech startup under “On The Red Dot” finds out programme.
• He picked up coding at the age of 11 by spending hours watching YouTube tutorials and went on to

President honors National Florence Nightingale Award 2020
• In Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Shailla Cannie, Principal, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing, has
been selected for the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award 2020, to be conferred by
President of India.
• Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has congratulated Dr. Shailla for being selected for the prestigious award.
Pertinently, the National Florence Nightingale Award is given to outstanding nursing personnel employed
in Central, State/UTs, Private, Missionary and Voluntary Organizations.
• It is the highest national distinction awarded to nurses or nursing aides, which consists of a cash amount
of Rs 50,000, a certificate and a medal.

Bihar cops, including three IPS officers won national awards
• Three officers of Indian Police Service (IPS), besides three junior cops, have been selected this year
also to be awarded with the Internal Security Service Medals and the Home Minister's Medals
respectively for outstanding services in duty.
• Rakesh Rathi, The Inspector General of Police of Magadh range, present Lakhisarai SP Sushil Kumar
and Jamui ASP (operation) Sudhansu Kumar are the IPS officers, who would be awarded with the Internal
Security Service Medals.
• The other three policemen selected for the Home Minister Medal this year for outstanding services are
havaldar Bhogendra Mishra of Police Academy at Rajgir and constables Anuranjan Kumar and Vipin
Kumar Singh of CTC at Nathnagar in Bhagalpur.

Padma Awards 2021 announced
• The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the Padma Awards 2021 - one of the highest civilian
Awards of the country - on the eve of 72nd Republic Day.
• These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at
Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.
• This year the President has approved the conferment of 119 Padma Awards.
• The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards.
• 29 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of

51st IFFI concludes with grand closing ceremony
• The closing ceremony of the 51st edition of the International Film Festival of India was held in the
Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Stadium in Goa.
• Due to the COVID-19 the festival was held in hybrid mode, there was physical and virtual screening of 50
films out of 224 films across various categories.
• Bangladesh was the country focus of the festival. Four films of Bangladesh were included in the ‘country
of focus’ section.

Padma Shri Awardee Transgender Joga Nritya Performe
• Manjamma Jogathi, the Padma Shri comes after decades of social and financial struggle.
• The list of Padma awards recipients this year includes a transgender from Karnataka who has over the
past many decades practised and single-handedly popularised rural folk arts.
• Manjavva Jogati, as she would be called in Karnataka, held aloft the cause of these art forms, especially
the Jogati Nritya and Janapada songs, practiced in rural Karnataka, Maharashtra, and parts of Andhra
Pradesh.
Achievements :
• In 2006, she was awarded the Karnataka Janapada Academy Award and, 13 years later, in 2019, she
herself was appointed President of the institution, becoming the first transgender to occupy the position.
• In 2010, the Karnataka government honoured her with the annual Kannada Rajyotsava award.
Uttar Pradesh's Ram Temple tableau on Republic Day bags first prize
• The Ram Temple tableau of Uttar Pradesh that was on display during the Republic Day has bagged
the first prize among all tableaux.

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be giving away the first prize to Uttar Pradesh for its tableau.
• The Ram Temple tableau evoked strong reactions from the public.
• It is reported that the people present to witness the parade at the Rajpath applauded when the model of
the upcoming Ram Temple in Ayodhya made an appearance.
• The tableau provided the glimpse of the temple that began its construction recently.
• As for the setting of the tableau, it showcased Maharishi Valmiki composing the Ramayana, followed by
a model replica of the Ram temple that showed how it would look after its construction.
• It is for the first time that the Uttar Pradesh tableau showcased a glimpse of the Ram Temple that is being
built in Ayodhya.
• The Tripura tableau won the second prize for the Republic Day parade.
• The third prize was received by Uttarakhand’s tableau which was themed around Kedarkhand.

ICC introduces Player of the Month awards to recognise best performances of cricketers
• The International Cricket Council (ICC) on January 27, 2021 announced the 'ICC Player of the Month'
awards to recognise the best performances of male and female cricketers across all three forms of
international cricket.
• The ICC elaborated further by saying that an independent ICC Voting Academy comprising former players,
journalists and broadcasters from around the world will team up with fans to vote for the ICC Men's and
Women's Player of the Month.
• The awards will be conferred starting from this month onwards.

• Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the 2019 Kerala State Film Awards and the J C Daniel Award

• Veteran filmmaker Hariharan, who was conferred with the J C Daniel Award, is an artist who had
travelled with cinema for about half a century and made films which went on to become milestones in the
annals of Malayalam tinsel town, he said.

2021 Padma Awards: Odisha's octogenarian doctor Dr Krishna Mohan Pathi
• Dr Pathi is a noted orthopaedic surgeon who is known for his landmark work in tribal districts of the
State.
• Octogenarian Dr Krishna Mohan Pathi goes about giving free treatment to poor patients on a daily
basis in a village of Ganjam district.
• For him, age is just a number as the 82-year-old doctor refuses to give up on helping the needy, a trait
which has earned him the Padma Shri award this year.
Odisha teacher scores a century in his age and 2021 Padma Awards
• Fondly known as 'Nanda Mastre', centenarian Nanda Prusty of Kantira in Sukinda block had never
imagined he would be bestowed the coveted Padma Shri award for his service to the society.
• A class VII pass-out, Prusty who turned 100 this year, has been teaching children as well as senior
citizens of his village for the last seven decades.
• His mission is to eradicate illiteracy from his village.
Padma Awards: Divine poetess Purnamasi Jani from Odisha's Kandhamal
• Purnamasi Jani has over a lakh poems and devotional songs to her credit, but Purnamasi Jani has never
been to a school.
• And the 76-year-old tribal poetess, popularly known as Tadisaru Bai in the region, has never repeated
any of her poems or songs.
• Born in Charipada village under Khajuripada block of Kandhamal district, Purnamasi was married at a
young age.
• 5,000 of her songs and poems have been recorded by litterateurs and literary societies.
• Her biography was subsequently written by Dr Surendranath Mohanty and a teacher Duryodhan
Pradhan compiled all her songs.
Jallikattu out of final list at Oscar Awards
• Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Jallikattu is officially out of the race for the Oscars in the Best International Feature
Film category.
• The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not include the Malayalam flick when it published
the list of final 15 movies.
• In all, films from 93 countries were nominated to the category.

• The shortlisted 15 will now be viewed by the Academy members and five of them will make it to the final
five of Oscar nominations.
Karnataka village girl, bags award for 'gourd art' at national Kala Utsav
• At a time when many children could not make the most of their free time during the lockdown induced by
the pandemic, a 15-year-old girl from a remote village in Mysuru took it as an opportunity to try her hands
at 'gourd art'.
• She developed the skill to such an extent that she bagged an award in a national event which concluded
recently.
• Chandana A, a Class 9 student of the government high school in GB Saragur of HD Kote taluk, has made
the state proud by winning second place in the national-level Kala Utsav, an initiative of the Ministry of
Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan.
• Her artwork helped her bag the award for the state under the category 'Indigenous Toys and Games'.
SERB announces Women Excellence Award 2021 in Science on the International Day of Women
• The SERB Women Excellence Award was announced on the occasion of International Day of Women
and Girls in Science 2021.
• The SERB Women Excellence Award that has been conferred on them provides a grant of Rs. 15 lakhs
for a period of three years to the awardees to pursue their research ideas.
• The award given by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a Statutory body of the
Department of Science and Technology (DST) supporting basic research in the frontier areas of
science and engineering, was launched in the year 2013.
• It is a one-time award given to women scientists below 40 years of age who have received recognition
from any one or more of the National Academies such as Young Scientist Medal, Young Associateship,
etc.

Awards for writing competition: High Commission of India, Bangladesh
• The High Commission of India in Dhaka announced the winners of the writing competition on the subject
‘What Liberation means to me’ for the youth of Bangladesh.
• The prize giving ceremony was organised at the High Commission of India in Dhaka.
• The competition received over 1050 submissions from Bangladesh and abroad.
• The Minister of State for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak gave away the prizes as Chief Guest of the function.
• In Category A of Bangla competition, Afsara Tasnim of Dhaka University was adjudged the Champion.
• Farsia Kawsar Chowdhury of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was
given the prize as the first runners up.
• In the English category, Maliha Momtaz Oishi from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College was declared
as the Champion while Ipshita Kajuri from North South University was the first runner up.
• In both the categories a total of 14 prizes were given away.
• Champions of each category were awarded with laptops, the first and second runner up received
Tabs.
• Other winners received a smartphone, along with a crest, certificate and book.
• The top essays from each category will be published in Bharat Bichitra magazine of the Indian High
Commission, said the Press release issued by the High Commission of India.
• The aim of the competition was to give Bangladeshi youth a platform to show their creativity and share
their own understanding and meaning of Liberation.

• Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the National Bal Shree awards to M Madhurima, S
Ananthan and K Prajwal at Cliff House.
• Madhurima won the award for creative performance, Ananthan for arts, and Prajwal for science.
• Madhurima is the only girl from the state to win this award this year.
• Bal Shree awards are the highest honour given to children aged between 10 and 16 by the country.
• The winners are presented with a certificate, memento, and Indira Vikas citation worth RS 15,000.
• V K Prasanth, MLA; Jawahar Bala Bhavan principal S Malini, Bala Bhavan executive officer G Mathunni
Panicker and parents of the award-winning children were also present.
Three children from Kerala selected for national awards
• Three children from the state have been selected for the national bravery awards instituted by the Indian
Council for Child Welfare (ICCW).
• Ummer Mukthar of Malappuram who won the special award will get a medal and a cash prize of Rs
75,000, while Jayakrishnan Babu of Wayanad and Muhammed Hamras K of Malappuram who won the
general awards will each get a medal and a cash prize of Rs 40,000.
• The ICCW will also bear the education expenses of the children, including the cost of their school, degree,

• The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a GMR Group led consortium, has been awarded

the GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) received the Gold Recognition by
the ACI in the below 25 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category.
• ACI’s Green Airports Recognition programme promotes environmental best practices to
minimize the aviation industry’s impact on the environment and recognizes ACI Asia-Pacific
members for outstanding environmental initiatives and projects.
• Each year, a different theme is chosen from the environmental aspects and the theme for 2021
was Air Quality Management specifically emphasizing the benefit of local air quality

• About 130 Indian peacekeepers deployed with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan
(UNMISS) have been honoured with UN medals for their "outstanding performance".
• India is among the largest troop contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions.
• About 135 Indian and 103 Sri Lankan peacekeepers serving in the mission were awarded for
their service.

• The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a special edition intake of 10 cricket icons
including former India cricketer Vinoo Mankad into the ICC Hall of Fame to celebrate the
prestigious history of Test cricket, coinciding with this month’s maiden World Test
Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand.
• The stalwarts, who have made great contribution to the game and were inducted into the ICC
Hall of Fame are:
• Aubrey Faulkner of South Africa and Monty Noble of Australia (Early Cricket Era, prior to 1918)
• Sir Learie Constantine of West Indies and Stan McCabe of Australia (Inter-War Era, 1918-1945)

Assam to institute own versions of Bharat Ratna and Padma awards from next year
• The Assam government will present its own versions of the Bharat Ratna and the Padma
awards from next year.

• The weekly cabinet meeting, chaired by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma decided to
institute the Asom Ratna Award to be presented every year to one person who has made
significant contribution to the society.
• The cabinet also instituted other civilian honours such as the Asom Bibhushan Award to be
presented to three persons, the Assam Bhushan to five and the Asom Shree to 10 people every
year.
• These fourawards will carry cash prizes of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh
respectively with other benefits like free medical treatment for critical illness, free stay at Assam
Bhawans and free travel in ASTC buses, among others.
