REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies that the researcher considered in
strengthening the importance of the present study. It also presents the synthesis of the art to fully
understand the research for better comprehension of the study.

Pekin Duck
Pekin ducks are a large breed of dabbling, white-feathered ducks that have been
domesticated for more than 2000 years. Although their exact origin is unknown, most people
concur that it was probably in Southeast Asia. These ducks have a pleasing aesthetic look and
produce larger eggs and more meat than most other ducks thanks to selective breeding. Pekins
are now among the most widely used industrial ducks in the world. The analysis of the recent
study by Rabanni et al. (2019), revealed that with the nation's population set to continue to
rise, meat-type duck farming may provide a solution to the nation's projected protein shortage.
Hence, raising meat-type Pekin ducks in complete confinement or in an intense system like that
for broiler chickens while feeding them a high ME-low CP diet (Diet-4) may be a realistic option
for achieving the highest possible level of meat duck output. Repeating the diet and cost-
effectiveness study is necessary to do for sustainable production.
The three duck breeds or hybrids that are raised for meat production in commercial
operations are the white Pekin (Anas platyrhynchos), Muscovy (Cairina moschata), and mule
ducks, which are a mix between the first two types. The three species of duck have relatively
varying nutritional needs due to their various rates of growth. Pekin ducklings are normally sold
for 6 to 7 lb when they are 7 to 9 weeks old and have eaten 20 to 25 lb. the feed. Mule and
Muscovy ducks demand more nutrition and take longer to reach the same weight. Muscovy
ducks have less fat than Pekin ducks despite taking longer to achieve market weight. (Jacob,
2023)
According to Brosas (2023), the Philippines is one of the top producers of agricultural
goods and farm animals, such as Pekin ducks, in all of Asia. Is duck meat popular in the
Philippines? Yes, duck meat is popular next to chicken meat. The Philippines slaughtered 15.62
million fewer ducks for meat production in 2021 compared to the prior year. In 2016, the
nation's total number of ducks slaughtered for food production peaked. With these facts, the
study for Pekin ducks is a must to fully maximize the potential and use of these ducks.
