Weather Briefing and Flight planning

CAIPEEX Bengaluru mission

Debrifing on yesterday’s flight: Two flights were conducted. The first was towards
Anantapur. It showed some gradient of aerosols, decreasing from there to the south, but
increasing back in Bangalore. The second was south of Bengaluru. The vertical profiles up to
22000’ were taken in the first flight and up to 10000’ were taken in the second flight.

Weather Today: As per the predictions, heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred to many places
overt west coast of India. The rainfall was active over most parts of the country. Yesterday’s 12Z
925 and 850 hPa charts showed cyclonic circulations over the central parts of the country. The
speed convergence was present in the lower levels over the northern part of the peninsular India.
The morning satellite pictures of IMD and Wisconsin weather website pictures showed deep
convective clouds over the west coast. Another deep convective area was present near the head
bay of Bengal.

3. Forecast: The cyclonic circulation has been predicted to develop over central parts of the
country at 850 and 700 hPa levels. Under its influence, widespread rainfall activity is forecasted
over central and north India. The west coast will remain active. The deep convective clouds will
be developed over west region. The circulation and rainfall activity over north interior Karnataka
and Rayalsima will be subdued. Isolated convective clouds with bases 6000-7000’ will develop
in the afternoon.

Flight Plan: The scientific objective: To investigate the cloud structure formed over the Arabian
Sea.

Flight towards the west coast in the direction 270. Take off time 12.00 and landing 4.00.
Climb to 22000’ at Bengaluru take the tail wind, go to Mangalore , decent to 500’, make
sorties in the clouds.
