Weather Briefing and Flight planning

CAIPEEX Bengaluru mission

Date : 6 July 2009

1.Debrifing on yesterday’s flight: The flight was conducted between 6.35 – 9.35 UTC towards
the Mangalore. The important observation is existence of haze layer extending above 6000’.

2. Weather conditions: As per the forecast given yesterday, the heavy to very rainfall occurred
over the west coast. The chief rainfall figures are: Mumbai-24 cm,Thane-15cm, Panjim-15
cm,Karkala-23cm,Kota-21cm,Agumbe-19cm. Many places over central India and north India
received wide spread rainfall. The cyclonic circulation at 950 and 850 hPa level was present over
north India.

3. Forecast: Based on the morning wind and satellite data, the deep convection will continue
over the west coast region. The cloud bases will be at 4000-5000’. The convection over the
rainshadow region will be subdued. The isolated convective activity will develop in the
afternoon hours. No chances of occurring thunderstorm over Bengaluru in the afternoon. So
flight plan be extended to 4.00 p.m.

4. Flight Plan: The scientific objective: To investigate the cloud structure formed over the
Arabian Sea.

Flight towards the west coast in the direction 270. Take off time 12.00 and landing 4.00.
Climb to 22000’ at Bengaluru take the tail wind, go to Mangalore , decent to 500’, make
sorties in the clouds.
