This is a question I ask myself at the end of every year.
Why?
It keeps me on my toes.
Every year I like to challenge myself to try to do something every day for
365 days. I feel by giving myself these challenges it helps me grow as a
person, it’s also great having something to look back on at the end of the
year and tell myself “you did that”.
For example one year I challenged myself to create something cool every
day for 365 days. All I had to was to produce a piece of art, illustration,
doodle, photography, sculpture anything that was creative.
The reason for that challenge was to help myself become a better
designer. At the time I was working in a job that just wasn’t inspiring me
creatively or feeding my creative needs so I set myself this challenge to
help me work my creative muscles. Your mind is no different from your
body and how do you get your body into the best shape?
You train every day and make sure you eat right.
Your mind is no different, you need to train it every single day to make it
stronger and that’s exactly what I did.
And it worked.
By the end of the 365 days, I was able to come up with 4-5 solid creative
ideas almost without thinking about it.

There was a part of the book where James talks about idea generation
and this idea on how to become an idea machine.
“Every day I write down ideas. I write down so many ideas that it hurts my
head to come up with one more. Then I try to write down five more …
The “idea muscle” atrophies within days if you don’t use it. Just like
walking. If you don’t use your legs for a week, they atrophy. You need to
exercise the idea muscle. It takes about 3–6 months to build up once it
atrophies. Trust me on this”
I like James’s thinking and have done something similar before it

made complete sense to me.
I was sold.
In his book, James mentions to try come up with 10 ideas every day but for
me, I felt 5 was more realistic, sorry James :)
5 ideas every day for a year which amounted to 1825 ideas... easy right?
Well no, not so easy as it turns out. At the beginning I has loads of ideas, I
had so many ideas that I thought I should have started out with 10.
But, like all good things that quickly came to an end after the first 2
weeks. The ideas were starting to take longer to generate and I felt
sometimes I was repeating myself.
The fact I was publicly posting my ideas on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram,

Facebook, forums, and blogs meant I was held accountable. People were
scrutinising every single idea and this meant that the ideas had to be good
if not great.
1825 okayish ideas are easy but 1825 great ideas are somewhat harder.
By week 6 it was starting to take its toll on me. The time I spent on my
ideas was starting to eat into my client time and was costing me money.
Breathe. Focus. Plan.
I needed to be more organised with my time.
Once I got into a routine and relaxed a little the ideas started to flow
again, I started to enjoy the process.
There are certain tips & methods I use to help me generate ideas, I
share them throughout this book.
Read, test, throw away whatever doesn’t work and implement what
does. I’m a big believer in trial and error.
There is no such thing as a bad idea. You are restricting your bad ideas
from reaching their potential! Try letting them flow for once. When
an idea pops into your head, don’t tell yourself that it’s bad. Rather,
share it with your friends or followers ask them what do they think of
it. Don’t be embarrassed to share.
Sharing my ideas was the best decision I ever made.
Remember to trust your imagination because when you think outside

the box things are not always what they seem.

I quickly realsied when I started this journey that Idea generation takes
time and commitment, rather than a gift or skill I was born with. Do
I think you can actually teach a person to become an idea machine?
Absolutely, but there are definitely habits and routines that I would
recommend you doing every day to help you get your ideas flowing and
eventually become an idea master. After all, ideas don’t just spring up out
of nowhere. They emerge from research and real-life experiences, which
your brain has had time to process.
To speed this process along, I’ve created a book of useful ways to generate
ideas. Whether you’re working from home alone or as part of a bigger
team, this book explains how to establish structured methods that will
kick-start your idea generation.
Reading through this book is all well and good, but make sure you set
aside some time today to put it into action. Who knows where this book
will take you.

avoid spoiling of your favourite TV show or live sports event.

98. Online stores removing out of stock items from their shop. If it’s out
of stock then remove it. Simples.
99. A “hide open programs” button before you log back into your laptop.
100. Programmable safe word upon hearing that automatically silently

calls emergency response, read out your GPS coordinates to the
operator and then keep the call alive so the victims voice is recorded.
101. A silent game controller.
102. When you receive a friend request on Facebook, your options should
be “Accept,” “Delete” or “Hide Request”.
103. Mute button option on my Microwave. People are sleeping!
104. Netflix should have a shuffle button.
105. Where are they now? website for people used in Memes.
106. Online book store where you can chat to other users viewing the
same book. Be great to talk to other people about the author or
previous books you read etc.
107. “Google this number” A button that pops up on your phone

while its ringing.
108. A dating app where you set a date idea, and then you’re only shown
people who want to do that date idea as well.
109. A LinkedIn feature which looks at your current job role/company

and lets you see the typical career paths for other people that had
a similar job role/company five years ago. LinkedIn should really
give you tools like this to build your career rather than just another
networking site.
110. An app that prompts you to call your loved ones. The app would send
you a notification to call your kids/ parents/ grandparents/ etc.
111. A social network that hides your likes and follower count.
112. Option to choose what music you would like to listen when
put on hold.
113. Alarm clock App that would tell you how many other people have
set their alarm at the same time. It could show you the percentage of
people who snoozed too. And maybe what time they went to bed?
114. Rent a controller, an online store where you can rent

console controllers.
115. Unlock those time wasting apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
by going for a jog. The app would connect to RunKeeper and
you would only have access to your fav apps once you did the
predetermined amounts of steps.
116. They should start putting pictures of alcoholics on alcohol

packaging, they put tar lungs on cigarettes then why not alcohol.
Pictures of obese people on junk food…
117. Flash Mob cleaners, a site where people post photos of polluted
areas. Each Sunday the mob will pick a place and go clean it up.
Before and after photos will be posted when completed.
118. “Swear Jar” bot on Facebook/ Twitter etc that automatically donates
an allotted amount to a charity every time someone swears in a post.
119. Netflix should have a “Soon to be removed” section for content they
will be removing.
120. Browser tabs to be different colours depending on how long I spent

on them. Red > 0–1 Hour, Orange > 1–2, Green > 2+
121. An iPhone feature that makes your phone vibrate just before it runs
out of battery to remind you to charge it.
122. Touch ID handles to unlock the car.
123. Music version of IMDb.
124. Low battery mode option to always have on my iPhone. Turning off
when “sufficiently charged” really grinds my gears. I want it on ALL
the time.
125. An app where men can learn whether or not a woman’s shop has a
seat for partners. If no seat then we wait outside.
126. A toaster that rotates and ejects the toast horizontally right onto your
plate.
127. Flash drive with an e-ink display, so you can tell whats on your drive.
128. A simulator game where you become a famous social influencer.
129. Wearable hat technology. A hat where people could tell how your
feeling by the colour.

the frisbee and it will return to your GPS coordinates every time.
137. A digital toothpick where it is able to tell how healthy your gums are.
138. Adjustable coffee cup lid hole.
139. Facebook graffiti. The ability to leave graffiti on your friend’s walls,
the graffiti is tagged by you to stop inappropriate content and lasts up
to an hour.
140. A website that just gives bullet points of “who did what today and
why was it good/bad/indifferent”.
141. Golf ball drone. GPS tracked gold balls, never lose your ball again.
Did your ball fall in the lake? No problem the drones claw will
retrieve your ball effortlessly.

awareness bracelets where you get updates on how your monthly
donations are being used.
143. A digital water bottle where the colour will change depending on how
close you are to hitting your daily requirements. Red being 0% and
blue being 100%.

points of course.

146. An app where women could alert other nearby women when a creepy
guy was near… It could be called “Creep alert”.

148. An option in your YouTube sub feed which hides all the videos you
have already watched.
149. A website where you can take a picture of a plant and it gives you
care instructions.

154. Nonprofit Organisation that fact-checks and can mark influential

158. Lend the visually impaired a helping hand. An app where if a visually
impaired person was in trouble it would alert a user who is close by
to come and help. Could be as simple as a helping hand across the
road.

161. An option to re-follow someone without alerting them to the fact that
you unfollowed them in the first place.
162. A site dedicated to polls, filter polls by interests etc. I love polls.

and they let you know how the weather really is outside.

165. Sensor umbrellas. An umbrella that would move according to its

surroundings. If you see another umbrella coming towards on you on
a tight path then the umbrella would close a certain distance so you
could bypass easily.
166. A mute button on Instagram.
167. Chrome extension that blocks anything related to Trump.
168. 4 handled mug, now you don’t have to go looking for the handle.
169. Earphones that rewind at the push of a button, the same way a Dyson
plug does. Never have tangled earplugs again.

for you to watch and vice versa.

filtering your niche. Hundreds of templates to choose from.

them.

WhatsApp icon is 200% a typical icon size and Stocks app 70%

other skilled members view all ideas and ask to work on your idea.
Once you’re happy with a team you then build the idea as a side
project. Each member has equal ownership.

226. Magic 8 ball version of Tinder. Shake the ball to reject and press the
screen to accept. The ball would vibrate when you were near a match.
227. When you delete an app all your apps that you use everyday stay
where they are. I hate when I delete an app and everything moves
and I keep clicking on where my other apps used to be.

It is important that you prepare a space for you to do your idea
generation. Try to get at least 20- 30 minutes when you’re

of regularly having the television on, listening to your music, and
surrounding yourself with noise and other distractions, practice
being in a relaxed, attentive state of mind. This state of mind
is the one most helpful to allowing creative ideas to slip into

Twitter etc) that I was intending to post 5 ideas a day for
a year it was almost similar to me signing a contract with
my followers. I knew once I had committed to this journey
online that I would 100% follow through with it.

I’m a designer, I’m a visual guy. The Beano and Dandy were my
choice of books as a kid. When I’m in a bookstore I always look
at the book covers and when I do open a book I ALWAYS flick to
the photos/ Illustrations. Books are wonderful for creating new
thoughts and stimulating great ideas. For a long time, I didn’t
read much. Two years ago, I made the conscious effort to read
more. Reading more for me was getting through a book every
second month. This was huge for me. But do you know what
happened? I actually enjoyed it, it was a nice break from the
digital noise that I surrounded myself with. By reading more I
actually got better and quicker at it. My eyes adjusted to this new
experience and I could digest more words and lines faster. I’m
now reading a book a month. When I added personal development
books to my routine, it helped me learn more and expand my
way of thinking. But last year, I started reading biographies,
fiction, thrillers etc. These stories really got me out of my daily
headspace and activated my idea generator. No matter the genre
ignites creativity and releases your imagination. The reason for
this is because every new idea a book can offer interacts with the
knowledge you already have. So whenever you open a book, look
for just one idea, and see how you can apply it in everyday life.

Wake up Early.
It’s essential to wake up early and use the first couple of hours
so that you can take control over your state of mind and your
body. In those few hours, you’ll kickstart the day in the way it
suits you best. Now I’m not saying get up at 4:30 am although
for some people that works. I’m talking about getting up at 6:30
am, try to get to bed and asleep for 10 pm so you’re still hitting
your 8 hours asleep a day. By getting up early your giving yourself
time to breathe before you start your day. I remember the days
I would set my alarm for 8:00 am, I would quickly shower,

197. Google Glasses that can subtitle everything for those who have trouble
hearing.

200. Glasses that convert sound into light. Imagine you’re hearing-impaired
and you can’t hear the doorbell ringing or the baby crying, but what if
you could see those sounds?
201. A dating app where people can leave reviews of a person similar to an
Amazon product.
202. Spotify but for movies. An app where people can make lists of movies
for each genre that they like, also the ability to search a friend’s page &
see their list of their favourite movies.
