THE NEW EUROCODE 2-4 ALLOWS REINFORCEMENT TO BE
USED FOR CALCULATION OF POST INSTALLED ANCHORS

• Reinforcement in the base material has an impact in

concrete related failure modes.

• Eurocode 2-4 provides a design method to designed

reinforcement specifically to prevent concrete breakouts
(tension and shear).

• Designing post-installed anchors with supplementary

reinforcement requires knowing the location of the
reinforcement inside the concrete.

• Eurocode 2-4 covers supplementary reinforcement for

static and seismic loads!

Focus of the presentation

The diameter of supplementary reinforcement rebars, per EN1992-4 range from 6mm to 16mm, 𝑓𝑦𝑘 ≤ 600𝑁/𝑚𝑚2 .

Design Your Baseplate with Supplementary Reinforcement Ι September 9, 2021 11

VERIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR SUPPLEMENTARY
REINFORCEMENT IN TENSION
No reinforcement Tension supplementary reinforcement

▪ Concrete breakout verification ▪ Concrete breakout verification is not required

▪ Steel verification of the supplementary reinforcement
▪ Anchorage verification of the supplementary
reinforcement

Supplementary reinforcement loads must be transferred to the structural member, following EN 1992-1.

Design Your Baseplate with Supplementary Reinforcement Ι September 9, 2021 12

SUPPLEMENTARY REINFORCEMENT IN TENSION IS
RELEVANT IN APPLICATIONS WITH SMALL EDGES
Edges << 1.5 hef

No reinforcement Tension supplementary reinforcement

• Typically fails in concrete breakout • Concrete breakout verification is

not performed

• Supplementary reinforcement
resistance limited by pull-out /
bond resistance

Supplementary reinforcement can increase overall resistance.

Design Your Baseplate with Supplementary Reinforcement Ι September 9, 2021 13

WITH LARGE EDGES, SUPPLEMENTARY REINFORCEMENT
DOES NOT TYPICALLY HELP
Edges > 1.5 hef

No reinforcement Tension supplementary reinforcement

• Concrete breakout verification required • Concrete breakout verification not required

• Typically fails in pull-out • Still fails in pull-out

Supplementary reinforcement does not increase overall resistance.

Design Your Baseplate with Supplementary Reinforcement Ι September 9, 2021 14

VERIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR SUPPLEMENTARY
REINFORCEMENT IN SHEAR
No reinforcement Tension supplementary reinforcement

▪ Concrete edge breakout verification ▪ Concrete edge verification is not required

▪ Steel verification of the supplementary reinforcement
▪ Anchorage verification of the supplementary
reinforcement
Supplementary reinforcement loads must be transferred to the structural member

Design Your Baseplate with Supplementary Reinforcement Ι September 9, 2021 15

SUPPLEMENTARY REINFORCEMENT SHEAR IS RELEVANT
IN APPLICATIONS CLOSE TO THE EDGE
Far from the edge Close to the edge & thin

• Does not fail in concrete edge breakout

• Typically fails in concrete edge breakout
• The resistance of breakout body is smaller, when
the concrete dimensions are also smaller.

Design Your Baseplate with Supplementary Reinforcement Ι September 9, 2021 16

APPLICATIONS CLOSE TO THE EDGE MUST HAVE
SUFFICIENT ANCHORAGE LENGHT
Close to edge Very close to edge

𝑙1 𝑙1

• Anchorange inside the breakout body must be larger

than: • Applications very close to the edge typically fail in
𝑙1 ≥ 4∅ Hooked, stirrups, loops, etc. concrete, as the rebars don’t have sufficient 𝑙1 -
𝑙1 ≥ 10∅ Straight
anchorage inside the breakout body.

Per EC2-4 & EC2-1-1, 7.2.2.2 (2) d.

Design Your Baseplate with Supplementary Reinforcement Ι September 9, 2021 17

SUPPLEMENTARY REINFORCEMENT CAN BE UTILISED ON
NEW AND EXISTING BUILDS
New builds → Where you can plan your reinforcement and it is preferred to post-install anchors

Existing buildings → Where you can scan your base material

4) TRANSFER THE LOADS FROM THE REINFORCEMENT
TO THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENT
Eurocode 2-4 calculates the supplementary reinforcement
to prevent concrete breakouts. Transferring the loads to 𝑙1 𝑙2
the rebars creates additional tension that must be
equilibrated.

To ensure structural stability, the loads on supplementary

Splice
length
reinforcement should be transferred to the structural
element using rebar theory.

In PROFIS Engineering, the necessary splice length is

also provided, as information to the engineer:
(Eurocode 2-1-1)

IMPORTANT:
If there’s no sufficient reinforcement length to transfer the reinforcement loads,
then a concrete breakout body would still develop at the end of the reinforcement!
This cannot be checked by PROFIS, as it would be necessary to model the full
structure.
