INTRODUCTION
The unit produces the M-Type transmission as found on many Navy ships. The
application is when fitting a new gyrocompass for modem gyros are not normally
compatible. The KW903-M allows the existing M-Type power source and distribution
unit to be retained, with a connection to the NMEA 0183 heading output of the gyro.

The unit is in a gray electrical enclosure with a door for bulkhead mounting.

SPECIFICATION.

INPUT: NMEA 0183 heading sentences. (All valid ones.)

OUTPUT: M-Type transmission, single output.

Current capability total 8 amps. (Very conservatively rated.)

OUTPUT: 24 volts for illumination.

OUTPUT: Changeover alarm relay.

POWER: 24 volts DC nominal.

Fused with electronic fuses. Not switched.

ENCLOSURE: 400mm high, 300 mm wide, 150 mm deep Eldon bulkhead

mounting enclosure with door.
Supplied with blank gland plates

FEATURES: Plug-in heavy-duty connectors. LEDs for monitoring operation.

HEADING INTEGRITY MONITORING

The KW903-M does not monitor the status of its output. Fit the KW950, KW991 or
KW991 compass comparator alarm to provide maximum security.

M-TYPE GYRO TRANSMISSION SYSTEM KW903 – M

M-TYPE TRANSMISSION is obtained from a rotary transmitter fed by an isolated 24
volts supply. The transmitter rotates one revolution for 2 degrees of heading change.

Each winding of the repeater motor is in turn connected to the positive or negative
supply for 5 steps, with one unconnected step between each reversal of voltage.

There are 12 steps for 2 degrees rotation, 6 steps per degree, as shown in the table
below. The KW903-M produces the same transmission electronically.

TESTING THE REPEATER SYSTEM

Isolate the input to the repeater distribution system. Measure the resistance of the
repeater system. S1 - S2, S2 - S3, S3 - S1. If the values are unequal there is a fault.
If the values are less than 4 ohms it will cause the 903 to deliver too much current,
so either disconnect repeaters or fit another KW903-M, splitting the load.

The repeaters should be isolated above earth. If there is leakage there is a fault.

INSTALLATION
The KW903-M should be installed to replace the existing transmitter, but retaining
the existing distribution system and power source.

TIP: Remove the door and take out the 903 chassis plate to ease mounting the box
to a bulkhead. Ensure the door opens the most convenient way.

The gland plate should be spaced off for ventilation using the pillars provided. The
lower gland plate may be drilled for glands, fitted to produce a slot or left off.

POWER
The DC supply should be switched externally. Earth the enclosure.

OUTPUT
The connectors can be removed to ease wiring up. The S1, S2, S3 output and the
illumination supply connect to the distribution system.

PHASING
If the repeaters rotate the wrong way reverse the output wires,S1 and S2.

IMPORTANT CAUTIONS.
Always remove the DC supply before disconnecting or connecting any repeaters to
avoid generating large inductive voltage spikes. The KW903-M is a high current
device. Short circuits on the outputs are likely to cause damage.

ALARM OUTPUT.
It is recommended that an external alarm be connected. Both contacts of a change
over relay are available. The relay is held energised when all is well.

DATA INPUT
The NMEA 0183 heading input should be selected for a fast update rate.

J2 OUTPUT ROTATION
Set this jumper to suit small vessels such as tugs and tenders, or larger vessels. It
only affects the output rotation follow-up rate.

SYSTEM TESTING.
The KW903-M does not have a test/demo facility as is the case with many other AMI
designs. For any tests the gyro will have to be slewed to check that the repeaters
follow. If this is not convenient then use a PC running a simulator program such as
RECSIM (See web site) or use a KW950-E data display interface in its test mode.

OPERATIONAL CHECKS.
The various LEDs show how the unit is working. The bi-colour status LED should be
a steady green. If it flashes it means only one of two things.

1. The heading input data is faulty.

2. The 24 volt DC supply on the board after the fuse is much too low.

The data output led LD2 should be flashing every second.

The M-Type transmission bi-colour LEDs will show the status of voltage across each
phase as the output rotates.

ALIGNMENT
Each repeater has to be aligned to correct heading. The KW903 can not align the
repeaters any more than the previous system.

On switch on the KW903 will not move any repeaters, they stay in position whilst
heading is received from the NMEA 0183 signal. When a changed heading is
received the 903 moves the repeaters accordingly.

GYRO COMPASS SYSTEM INTEGRITY MONITORING

The KW903-M does not monitor the state of the output, so has no way of knowing
that the M-Type output is correct. This is a deliberate feature because AMI already
have independent devices to check and monitor gyro systems.

The KW950-E or KW991 can be used to display the source of heading, the gyro
NMEA 0183 output, or the M-type heading. The KW991 compass comparator alarm
can be used to display aligned heading from the M-type transmission, and compare
it to the source, raising the alarm if a problem occurs.
