Beam instrumentation in the ESS DTL section

The beam instrumentation layout in the ESS DTL section is shown in Fig. 1.

In the DTL section, the set of diagnostics is:

o 4 Beam Position Monitors (BPM) in the first and the second tank, 3 BPMs
in the other tanks (in total 17)
o 5 Beam current monitors (BCM)
o 2 Faraday cups (FC) after DTL tank 2 and tank 4
o Few Beam Loss Monitor (BLM)

Mechanical integration issues might change the number and/or the position of the
diagnostics. The position of the BCMs is done according the DTL lattice v84 and
corresponds to empty half drift tubes.

Due to cost reduction 4 WS, 4 NPMs and 2 FCs have been removed from the lattice,
nevertheless, the intertank chamber shall be design in order to allow later installation of
these components.

Contribution From INFN Legnaro

In general, INFN Legnaro is in charge of the mechanical integration and the design of the
different diagnostics foreseen to be installed in the drift tubes (BPMs and BCMs), as well
as the design and fabrication of the vacuum chambers required for the installation of the
diagnostics.

WS, FC and BLM are not in the scope of the INFN Legnaro in kind contribution as well
as the electronic acquisition for the different diagnostics.

Technical scope:

 Beam Position Monitors

- INFN Legnaro designs the DTL BPMs electrodes, these include the
electromagnetic simulation for a proton beam in a range from 3.63 MeV to 90
MeV and the full mechanical design, based on ESS specifications.
- Fabrication, assembly and integration in the DTL drift tubes are in the scope
of INFN Legnaro.
- Cabling in the drift tube shaft, up to the outside of the DTL tank shall be the
responsibility of INFN Legnaro
- Cabling from the DTL tank to the klystron gallery and connection to the
electronic shall be the responsibility of ESS
- ESS and INFN shall agree on the interface connection.

Note: Female SMA type connectors shall be used for the BPMs outside of the DTL tanks,
the BPM signal with the nominal beam being at the center of the beam pipe shall be 300
mVpeak for a frequency of 704 MHz.

 Beam Current Monitor

- INFN Legnaro shall design and built the sensors based on ESS specifications.
- Mechanical integration in the empty half DTL drift tubes is in the scope of
INFN Legnaro.
- Cabling in the DTL wall, up to the outside of the DTL tank shall be the
responsibility of INFN Legnaro

- Cabling from the DTL tank to the klystron gallery and connection to the
electronic shall be the responsibility of ESS
- ESS and INFN shall agree on the interface connection

Note: the ACCT output as well as the input for calibration (see the following picture for
example) shall be preferably BNO connector at the outside of the DTL tank. In case BNO
is not possible, the ACCT output shall be BNC (x2) and the calibration input shall also be
BNC (x2).

 Inter tank area

- The mechanical integration of the intertank area is in the scope of INFN

Legnaro.
- INFN Legnaro shall design and fabricate the vacuum chamber foreseen to be
install between tank 1 and tank 2.
- INFN Legnaro shall provide to ESS the longitudinal space available for
diagnostic in this tank.
- ESS and INFN shall agree on flanges specifications and number needed for
diagnostic installation

For the flanges, the ESS beam instrumentation requests as clear aperture a square section
with a minimum dimension equal to 110x36 mm2 for the FC, NPM and the WS after
DTL tank1. The flanges shall be centred with respect to the reference beam axis.

The 4 flanges shall be positioned as shown in Fig. 3.
