2 Types of Paper Jams

Introduction
This chapter identifies causes for a paper jam.

Suspect Paper
Tickets from a “suspect lot/industry-wide paper issue” have been known to cause paper jams.
The “suspect” tickets exhibit paper anomalies such as a lot of curl/bow and twist. These tickets
seem to take on a stronger set/form to the printer paper path. The tickets are more difficult to
feed through the paper path and the printer bezel and are more prone to paper jams.
Suspect tickets: a) may not lay flat; b) may have excessive curl/bow and twist; or c) may feel
stiff especially after being exposed to higher temperatures (such as within a game or through
storage or transportation temperatures) over a period of time or when becoming older paper.

Example Suspect Paper

Example: Suspect Paper Jam Type: Accordion

Suspect tickets not feeding properly within the printer
even though ticket is fully printed.

Example: Suspect Paper Jam Type: Does Not Feed

The tickets, though correctly and completely printed, do
not feed through the bottom Presenter Roller.

Example: Suspect Paper Jam Type: Folded

These tickets fold when trying to go through the printer.

Example: Suspect Paper Jam Type: Paper Set

These tickets can take a stronger set/form to the printer
Paper Path.

Notice the pronounced

waviness of the ticket.

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. Do not use suspect paper. Contact your ticket supplier if encountering this paper type.
2. Perform the proper cleaning and maintenance (see Printer Cleaning Guide (MNL-000054)).
Use the FutureLogic Custom Cleaning Card (Part # 350-00287-100) to prevent any adverse
effects caused by the accumulation of paper dust and other contaminants.
3. Do not store spare ticket stacks inside the game. The Ambient heat within the game may
cause stored tickets to experience print quality and/or paper jam issues.

Excess Dirt/Paper Dust

The tickets or game housing the printer can be a source of dust that builds up over time.
Residue buildup can cause degradation in print quality leading to light or missing print.
Buildup on the Sensors can affect sensor performance leading to false printer states such as
erroneous sensors status, etc.
Excess dirt/dust on the Rollers can cause slicker Rollers and paper slippage or jams.

Example: Print Mechanism Area

Excessive paper dust accumulating in the Print
Mechanism area.

Notice the white paper dust accumulation is on the

Presenter Rollers and Ticket Taken Sensor.

Example: Tickets
The tickets are a source of paper dust.

The ticket side cuts on this pack are excessive and

can quickly cause paper dust accumulation.

Example: Slot Machine/Game

The Slot Machine/Game is a source of excessive
dust/dirt/cigarette smoke residue, etc. In addition,
the inside of games can build up high temperatures
that can adversely affect the paper.

Example: Partial Print on Ticket

The excessive paper dust build-up can cause Roller
slippage that may lead partial printing where the
ticket is not fully printed.

Example: Yellowing on Ticket

The heat within a game can degrade the tickets over
time by affecting the direct thermal imaging treatment
of the paper. This causes the tickets to yellow over
time. This ticket degradation can have an adverse
effect on print quality.

Example: Compressed Print on Ticket

Compressed print/truncated print is shown. The
print becomes small, distorted and unreadable
and/or the bar code will not scan in this condition.

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
2. Do not use any ticket packs that are an excess source of paper dust. Use only good quality
tickets with the printers.
3. Do not store ticket stacks inside the game. The Ambient heat within the game may cause
stored tickets to experience print quality and/or paper jam issues over time.
4. Perform proper game maintenance to ensure that there is proper clean air flow present and
the reduction of internal game heat and sources of dust/dirt. Ensure that all of the game
ventilation and cooling fans are operating properly within the games.
5. Ensure that the printer has the correct firmware version.

Bezel Misalignment
A printer bezel misalignment could cause interference of the ticket being presented by the
printer or the ticket may become damaged. This could result in the printed ticket not leaving
the printer or not being all the way presented. End users are not able to access to their ticket.

The Bezel mounted to the printer (as shown) is

high and mis-aligned to the game bezel.

Because of the bezel misalignment, the ticket did

not feed properly and shows signs of damage
when exiting the printer. At times, the ticket will
not exit when there is a severe misalignment.

(GEN2™, GEN2 Universal™, and GEN3 Evolution® Printers)

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. Ensure that the bezel on the printer is tight, straight, and correctly aligned with the printer.
2. If the game has a mating bezel to the printer Bezel (such as on the game door), ensure that
this is also tight, straight, and correctly aligned with the printer/printer Bezel when the
game door is shut.
3. When performing printer Preventative Maintenance (PM), periodically check the bezel
door/printer Bezel alignment and the tightness of the bezel hardware. Ensure that these
items stay correctly aligned and the hardware is secure and tight.

Improper Loading of Tickets

If the tickets are loaded incorrectly, for example, upside down (with the thermally treated side
up instead of down) or with the index mark at the trailing edge of the ticket instead at the
beginning of the ticket, the ticket will not go into the print mechanism, print or load properly.
In addition, when loading the tickets in the correct orientation and if the trailing ticket
perforation becomes partly broken, this may fully break when the printer attempts to load the
ticket. This, in turn, would not allow for the trailing/next ticket in the stack to load into the
printer. This would result in a paper out error status.

Example: Partial Break in Perforation

While loading a new pack of tickets, the
operator accidently partially breaks the
trailing ticket perforation.

When the printer was calibrating the ticket

registration for printing, the trailing ticket has now
completely broken. After the leading ticket is printed
and presented, this condition will cause a Paper Out
printer status.

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. Be careful. Load the paper in the correct orientation. Do not break any ticket perforations.
2. If a trailing ticket perforation becomes accidently broken, remove the loaded ticket within
the printer and re-load the ticket pack without breaking the ticket perforations.

Ticket Index Mark

The tickets have an index mark that registers the ticket in the correct position for printing and
bursting. If the index mark is misregistered (Top of Form) or if there is a graphic on the
non-thermal side of the ticket in a region that could be picked up by the Index Mark Sensor
this could cause a false index mark indication where: a) printing not to properly placed on the
ticket; and/or b) the ticket perforation may not be properly under the printers Burst Bar within
the Printer Mechanism and may not burst the ticket causing the ticket not to present (exit the
printer). A Jam Error would occur.

Example: Ticket Not Bursted or Correctly Presented

The ticket did not burst or correctly presented as the
ticket did not come out of the printer far enough.

This is the correct length at which the ticket

should be presented when the perforation has
been burst properly.

Example: Perforation Not Under Burst Bar

As the ticket perforation is not under the presenter
Burst Bar, the printer that did not burst the ticket.

The index mark is shown in the correct location for

this ticket. The ticket perforation is properly under
the presenter burst bar; the printer will burst the
ticket correctly.

The ticket leading edge of the ticket and the leading

edge of the index mark. The leading edge of the ticket
is placed in the printer according to the instructions
in the Paper Tray.

Example: Preprinted Shows Through Paper

The thermal printing side of the ticket has a dark blue
band printed on this side of the ticket.

The dark blue band can be seen through the paper. It

is also in the index mark region. This condition can
cause false index mark sensor detection.

Additionally, the dark blue band in violation of the

“Stay Out Area” of Ticket Specification 83500400
when printing on the graphics side of the paper.

Example: Index Mark has Void

This could cause a false index mark sensor indication.

Example: Leading Edge Anomaly

The leading edge of the printed index mark has a
printed anomaly. This could cause a false index mark
sensor indication.

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. Use tickets with the correct index mark.
2. Use the FutureLogic Ticket Template to measure the index mark to specification.

The required width of the ticket index mark is

between the .185” to .215” range.
The leading edge of the ticket to the leading edge
of the index mark is between the 1.235” to
1.265” range.

3. Ensure that the index mark is solid black without any voids or too light in color.
Additionally, the index mark should not have any smudges or printing anomalies.
4. Do not print in regions that would violate the Ticket Specification 83500400.

5. If you have out of tolerance or suspect index mark tickets, Contact your ticket provider.
Note: If encountering a perforation issue on some tickets and not on every ticket within
the pack; this is normal since typically ticket conversion uses separate dies with a
repeated pattern. This means that if you lay out five consecutive tickets, the die that
cuts ticket number one is not used again until cutting number five. Typically the dies are
on a cylinder with four dies using a rotating cutting process.

Ticket Inks
Non-cured inks or cured inks stick tickets together. If the inks used to print the tickets
graphics are either cured after the ticket stacks are together or are still wet/did not cure during
processing of the stack, these can cause the tickets to stick together.

Example: Graphic Printing Process Example: Graphic Printing Ink Curing Anomaly
Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. If you have known tickets with ink adhesion, contact your Ticket provider.
2. Fan the ticket pack before loading the tickets to help overcome some levels of ink adhesion.

Caution: Be careful not to

break any of the ticket
perforations!

Drink Spillage

A drink spillage occurs more with table top games

where drinks are on top of the games surfaces.
The spillage could seep into the game bezel, the
printer print mechanism and PCBA area, causing
paper jams from the build up of the drink residue.
Additionally, significant damage could occur to the
printer.

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. Immediately turn off power to the printer and attend to the spillage. This may require
printer tear down if the spillage has entered print mechanism area and/or the PCBA area.

Obsolete or Incorrect Firmware Version

Older firmware versions may have paper jam protection routines that when activated, shut
down the print job to protect the printer from a significant paper jam. However, a partial print
could result from the ticket jam protection print shut down process.
Always use the latest approved firmware for the printer type being used. Some firmware
updates have changed the printer jam routine thereby reducing the likelihood or occurrence of
a partial print caused by excessive paper dust. The paper dust could cause roller slippage and
the initiation of built-in paper jam protection routines.

Example: Partial Print Ticket

Identifying Firmware Version in Use

To determine the firmware version:
1. Turn off power to the printer.
2. While pressing the FEED button on the keypad,
simultaneously re-apply power until a
configuration ticket prints.

3. Review the configuration ticket for the firmware

version loaded into the printer.

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. Ensure that your printers contain the latest firmware to optimize printer performance and
feature sets.
2. To verify that you have the latest firmware version, contact your gaming regulatory body for
your jurisdiction. Compare your printer firmware versions to the latest approved version.
Your game manufacturers may also be able to help you determine the latest approved
versions that they released. However, ensure your jurisdiction gaming regulatory body has
also approved these versions prior to installing them into your printers.

Incorrect Ticket Perforations

If the ticket packs contain incorrect ticket perforations, one of two typical conditions may
occur: a) if the ticket perforations are “too light”; or b) if the perforation is “too high”. This
would cause a ticket jam error condition.

Example: Perforation “Too Light”

The trailing ticket becomes detached. After
printing the leading ticket the printer would
indicate a Paper Out status; the tickets need to be
re-loaded.

To test this paper, measure the ticket perforations

a force gauge.

Apply force until the ticket perforations breaks.

When the perforation breaks, the force gauge

measurements are taken. The perforation
specification is 2.9 to 4.1 Lbs (according to
the Specification 83500400).
In this case the perforation is too light (at .5 Lbs).

Example: Perforation “Too Strong”

The ticket will not burst within the printer and did
not fully present.

To test this paper, measure the ticket perforations

a force gauge.
The too strong perforation measured over 5 Lbs.
The perforation specification is 2.9 to 4.1 Lbs
(according to the Specification 83500400).

Recommended Action
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
· Contact your Ticket supplier.

Misleading Game Events

Many Casinos have event log sheets that are maintained to record the activity related to the
game performed by their slot technicians, etc.
The example event log shown is indicating a
maintenance code “56” which means a printer
failure has occurred. However, the code is being
used when the paper has been consumed by the
printer and a new pack of tickets is being installed
and loaded into the printer. Actually a printer
failure or fault did not occur at all.

Recommended Actions
To prevent and/or reduce this type paper jam:
1. When reviewing game event logs, note that printer failure maintenance codes being used
can be alarming and/or misleading.
2. If encountering an incorrect printer failure maintenance codes being used, determine if
correct codes are available. If not currently available, can correct printer maintenance
codes be established? If they are available, can the correct codes be used?
