Part 1

1. Topic title: Getting to Know Your School (Escape Room Addition)

2. Administration Team: Principal Abercrombie, Vice Principal Briggs, instructional

coach Mrs. Clow.

3. Session Summary: The session is about getting to know the new school. The

setup is a series of puzzles that need to be solved to leave the current room.

Each room will have clues on how to get out, but also useful knowledge about

the new school. For example, entering codes for the copying machine, or how to

clock in and out of work to denote hours.

4. Materials required: The session will need all the puzzles setup beforehand.

Participants should bring comfortable shoes and a great attitude.

5. The session will have four hours allotted from 8 am to noon. Breakfast will be

offered beforehand with all staff. Lunch will be served after everyone is done.

6. This activity requires some knowledge and fortitude to make it to the end. Three

groups will be formed with one administration leader for each group. The

administrator will pick the teams making sure to get a mix of different teachers.

Then they are given clues and activities that require everyone to work together to

get out of a location and onto the next one. After each activity and room is

escaped, the staff will know where everything is in the building. Snacks and

drinks will be incorporated as rewards for escaped rooms.

Summary

Escape rooms require a lot of determination and working together. Some people

are good at puzzles while others are assertive and see what others do not. This activity

is good for all ages and at every level of education. The rooms will be equipped with

leaders that know how to get out and everything that is required for release, but they are

there to guide not give out the answers. There is a level of trust required in each other

to get out of the locked rooms and figure out the clues. The clues will be things that new

teachers need to know so this is a good way to learn from the seasoned teachers.

However, some seasoned teachers may not know some technology needed and these

new teachers can in turn help them with the latest apps and slogans needed for some

codes to be used.

There will be breaks incorporated for necessities and time to get to know each

other during the time allotted. Each room that is unlocked will have rewards built in such

as treats and time to take pictures of the day's experiences. All groups will do the same

rooms but at different times. They will then rotate once they are done and have figured

out all the clues to open the locked passage. Each room will have a different theme

packed with strategies, hacks, and wonderful ideas.

One room will be called the sub room. This room is all about having a sub and

what is needed before you call in sick. Our lesson plans turned in and special

instructions for the sub, seating charts and personal notes on which students need

special attention, and of course a list of emergency numbers just in case. The second

room is all about classroom management. Whether one is a 20-year veteran teacher or

brand-new this topic is always welcomed. What works for one teacher may not work for

another, so having a variety of options and discussions is very helpful. Lastly, things

one must know the room. This room covers everything from forms needed to be fill out

to schedules and important dates to remember. Escape rooms are a fun way to relay

information and get people of any age to learn something new or solidify something they

already know.

Part 2

Purpose

The mentor program is put in place for staff to get to know each other and the

school. I would call it the mentee-mentor program. The program should form bonds and

encourages teachers to become the best version of themselves.

Criteria

Mentors should help fellow teachers with any problems or concerns that might

arise with new recruits. They should show them the ropes and help integrate new

teachers into the school.

Timeline

I would have the mentor do monthly observations on the new teacher with weekly

check-ins. I would also have all members of the program come together for weekly

meetings after school. These can be really quick with snacks provided, but everyone

gathering together has a bigger impact. The group needs to know that they are there for

each other as well. There are so many overlapping issues that someone can learn from

that another person has already dealt with or is going through a similar thing. This

mentee-mentor program would last the whole school year with a small ceremony at the

end with a certificate given to each mentor and mentee pairing.

Induction Activities

I would encourage a collaboration that involved something that would also benefit

the school such as organizing a pep rally or encouraging positive affirming posters to

hang up during Starr testing. Little things around campus can make a big impact on

students and teachers

Professional Development Topics

Time management is so important in the classroom. In art class, if the instructor

loses track of time and the bell rings, then they miss out on clean-up time. The next

class walks into a messy room and takes away time from the next class delaying

instruction. There are many variables to make sure a classroom runs smoothly, but one

must also consider the next class.

Classroom management in the form of behavior. This is one of the most

important things to get right from the very first day of school. Teachers can either have a

successful year or fail by not taking this topic seriously. Bad Behavior in the classroom

can ruin a lesson and put students at risk of getting hurt or failing.

Technology at every school is different. The programs they use for attendance or

grades are unique to each district. A new teacher to campus needs to have training on

how these programs work and are run. Some veteran teachers may even have trouble if

they were never taught. Technology is a big part of the educational system that needs

more training. Mentors need to be made aware of systems that teachers are required to

use daily and help with these necessary programs.

Budgetary Implications

There would be a stipend in place for being a mentor. Mentorship does not stop

when the bell rings. There are emails and phone calls they must respond to before and

after school. It is hard to put a price on taking care of another person’s career choice

and whether they have a successful first year. A teacher’s time is already very busy with

lesson plans, grading, communication with parents, and other miscellaneous activities.

These tasks are done off the clock which adds more work with no extra pay. Mentoring

is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly, therefore they should be

compensated for their work.

Servant Leadership

My mentor took me to lunch on professional development days. It was our time to

catch up and make sure everything was going on track. We still have lunch on

professional development days. A mentor does not stop when the program stops. A

mentor is for life if done correctly. Leadership is a calling and not all veteran teachers

make good mentors. I would make it a voluntary process that includes incentives.
