Our August 14 topic will be HOME AUTOMATION for Seniors. The goal of home
automation is to help create a home that is easier, more enjoyable and safe to live in.

Aging in place is a growing movement that focuses on keeping seniors stay in their
homes longer as they age maintaining their quality of life. By combining home
automation systems with the age in place idea, seniors can enjoy a more comfortable
experience in their home, as well as increase home safety.

Essentially, it is simply a way to make things happen in your home via remote or
automatic control of devices in your home. Systems can turn lights on at stairs or
hallways, open the garage door when you enter the driveway, monitor occupants to
ensure they eat or take medications and even send out notifications to family members
if a person does not get out of bed. And, if the doorbell rings, the TV can switch to a
video feed from the front door camera. Or, while you are away from home, it can tell
you if a pipe breaks or an intruder is in your home.
Home automation makes home access easier through the use
of automated doors and locks using cell phone and tablets.
The door will open and then will shut and lock itself.

Automation allows homeowners to access and control

temperature settings remotely by programming lights, shades,
air conditioning and heat on their devices. If once you’ve
gotten into bed and find that your home is too cold, you can simply change the
temperature on your phone.

Before you start

As with most things, having a good plan is where you should start. Do some research
and figure out what you would like to be able to do with your system and which options
are available. Talk with a few store installers about the technology and possibilities. Or,
even friends who have systems to get their input on what they like, don’t like or things
they wish they had done when they put their system in.

Several Comp Tech Club members have already updated their homes. The Club will also
assist members with their questions, suggestions and installation.

Home automation is not a fad. Quite the contrary, this technology will continue to
progress and provide even more ways to improve the quality of our lives.
