RSA algorithm and factorization

T
he RSA public key algorithm was created in 1977 by Ronald
Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard Adelman. It is the most used
asymmetric cryptographic algorithm. The three analyst cre-
ated this algorithm based on the papers of Diffie-Hellman about
public key systems and later founded their company RSA Data
Security Inc., one of the most prestigious companies focused on
data protection.

The algorithm is based on the fact that finding the factors of a

large composite number is difficult. When factoring a number, the
most logical step to find the divisors of the number is to divide
said number by 2, then by 3, 4, ... and so on until the remainder of
such division is zero.

If the number in question turns out to be a prime number, its only

divisors are 1 and the number itself. If we call this number n, then
we will have to perform n divisions to find a divisor. If the number
is also a very large number, the process becomes very slow and
complicated. [...]
This is called the prime factorization problem.

RSA is a key pair (public and private key) generator. An RSA user
creates and publishes a public key based on two large prime num-
bers, along with an auxiliary value. The prime numbers are kept
secret on the machine that generates the private key, which, once
generated, is protected by a symmetric cryptographic algorithm.
